The current work addresses the unifi cation of Electronic Health Records related to cervical cancer into a single medical knowledge source, in the context of the EU-funded ASSIST research project. The project aims to facilitate the research for cervical precancer and cancer through a system that virtually unifi es multiple patient record repositories, physically located in different medical centers/hospitals, thus, increasing fl exibility by allowing the formation of study groups "on demand" and by recycling patient records in new studies. To this end, ASSIST uses semantic technologies to translate all medical entities (such as patient examination results, history, habits, genetic profi le) and represent them in a common form, encoded in the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The current paper presents the knowledge elicitation approach followed, towards the defi nition and representation of the disease's medical concepts and rules that constitute the basis for the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The proposed approach constitutes a paradigm for semantic integration of heterogeneous clinical data that may be applicable to other biomedical application domains.

In order to make surfing the internet faster, and to save redundant processing load with each request for the same web page, many caching techniques have been developed to reduce latency of retrieving data on World Wide Web. In this paper we will give a quick overview of existing web caching techniques used for dynamic web pages then we will introduce a design and implementation model that take advantage of 'URL Rewriting' feature in some popular web servers, e.g. Apache, to provide an effective approach of caching dynamic web pages.

Increasing energy costs and the trend to green solutions are generating growing interest in eco-friendly computing. Flash storage technology satisfies low-energy requirements and falling prices for flash storage have recently made it possible to replace conventional hard disks with solid state drives. These can provide higher performance when deployed properly but they are still too expensive for the low-cost server market. In this paper we analyze inexpensive flash drives and conventional hard drives with a focus on energy efficiency. Our main goal is to decide whether replacing hard drives with USB flash drives is a reasonable and economic way to build energy-efficient servers. Our evaluation shows that despite the high throughput of hard disks, flash drives have a better performance per joule. In some cases, inexpensive USB flash can compete not only with hard disks but also with solid state drives.

A Search Support Engine (SSE) is implemented based on the basic principles of Information Retrieval Support Systems (IRSS) and Information Seeking Support Systems (ISSS). An SSE aims at meeting the diversity needs from different users, providing various supporting functionalities, tools, etc. for users to perform various tasks beyond the traditional search and browsing provided by current search engines. As an illustrative example, we developed a DBLP search support engine (DBLP-SSE), and we discuss some concrete supporting functionalities, namely, search refinement support, domain analysis support, etc. Each of the functionality focus on a unique perspective supporting users finding useful information and knowledge from the DBLP dataset. The search support engine can be considered as a step towards Knowledge Retrieval (KR) and Web Intelligence (WI).

In optical burst switching (OBS) networks one of the most challenging problems is to provide service differentiation. The lack of buffering in the intermediate nodes, makes QoS provisioning in OBS networks a difficult problem to address. In this work, we propose a scheduling algorithm that supports QoS based on preemptions, which are controlled by a novel preemption policy. Our claims are validated by analytical modelling and experimental analysis through simulations using data belonging to two different classes of service - best effort and video streaming data. Performance evaluation is based on throughput measurements for best effort class, and perceived quality metrics like PSNR and MOS scores for the video streaming class.

Abstract Robots and other intelligent systems in human environment need high-level cognitive capabilities to enable the achievement of complex goals in complex environments using limited computational resources. Robotic cognitive capabilities include attention allocation, planning, perception processing, reasoning about the other agents and the environment. This paper presents an approach for safe robot controlling using the Intelligent Space. In the iSpace networked distributed sensors observe and gather information from the space. In this environment mobile robots can be tracked with ultrasonic positioning system, the topological map can be build using laser range finders and other properties of the space can be recognized. The recognized properties of the space and the mobile code technology make it possible to extend the control framework of mobile robots with components in a safe way. The mobile code is a program-component obtained from a remote system, transferred across a network and dynamically downloaded and executed on the robots. This code is created, verified, stored and transmitted to the robot using the Certified Proved-Property-Carrying Code architecture, where properties and their proofs also attached to the code. The receiver can verify the proofs and it can decide whether to use or to refuse the received mobile component.

We define a transfer function based on the first and second statistical moments. We consider the evolution of the mean and variance with respect to a growing neighborhood around a voxel. This evolution defines a curve in 3D for which we identify important trends and project it back to 2D. The resulting 2D projection can be brushed for easy and robust classification of materials and material borders. The transfer function is applied to both CT and MR data.

In this paper, a graphical modeling-based approach to semantic video analysis is presented for jointly realizing modality fusion and temporal context exploitation. Overall, the examined video sequence is initially segmented into shots and for every resulting shot appropriate color, motion and audio features are extracted. Then, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are employed for performing an initial association of each shot with the semantic classes that are of interest separately for every modality. Subsequently, an integrated Bayesian Network (BN) is introduced for simultaneously performing information fusion and temporal contextual knowledge exploitation, contrary to the usual practice of performing each task separately. The final outcome of the overall video analysis approach is the association of a semantic class with every shot. Experimental results as well as comparative evaluation from the application of the proposed approach in the domain of news broadcast video are presented.
