Applying high level parallel runtimes to data/compute intensive applications is becoming increasingly common. The simplicity of the MapReduce programming model and the availability of open source MapReduce runtimes such as Hadoop, are attracting more users to the MapReduce programming model. Microsoft has released DryadLINQ for academic use, allowing users to experience a new programming model and a runtime that is capable of performing large scale data/compute intensive analyses. In this paper, we present our experience in applying DryadLINQ for a series of scientific data analysis applications, identify their mapping to the DryadLINQ programming model, and compare their performances with Hadoop implementations of the same applications.

The prediction of pulmonary infections in intensive care unit is a complex medical task where a large number of parameters, tests, clinical symptoms and laboratory results are present. The knowledge of physicians according to the physical examination and clinical measurements are the main point to succeed a diagnosis and monitoring patient status. This paper presents the results of our investigation of the problem of representing knowledge for medical diagnosis systems concentrated on the pulmonary infections. The main topic of the presented effort is the representation of the cause-effect relationships within medical data by the application of the soft computing technique of fuzzy cognitive maps. The fuzzy cognitive map is a knowledge based technique for modeling and representing experts' knowledge. It can handle efficiently with complex modeling problems to assess medical decision making tasks. Due to its easy graphical representation the proposed FCM can be used to make the medical knowledge widely available through computer consultation systems.

In this paper, we present the experimental results and evaluation of the SmartBox stimulation device in P2P e-learning system which is based on JXTA-Overlay. We also show the design and implementation of the SmartBox environment that is used for stimulating the learners motivation to increase the learning efficiency. The SmartBox is integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. We found by experimental results that the SmartBox is an effective way to increase the learner's concentration. We also investigated the relation between learner's body movement, concentration, and amount of study. From the experimental results, we conclude that the use of SmartBox is an effective way to stimulate the learners in order to continue studying while maintaining the concentration.

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

This paper is concerned with a D-stability controller design problem with a static or a reduced-order output feedback controller. This problem is difficult to be solved theoretically, because it consists of some bilinear matrix inequality's (BMI's). In this paper, an exterior-point approach to this problem, which produces a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from an infeasible one is proposed. The feature of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point of the sequence. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our approach.

In the last few years we have seen a significant growth in synchronous optical network (SONET) deployments in telecommunication service providers. With growth of data traffic, network operators seek network-engineering tools to extract the maximum benefits out of the existing infrastructure. This has suggested a number of new optimization problems, most of them in the field of combinatorial optimization. We address here the Weighted Ring Edge-Loading Problem (WRELP). The WRELP is an important optimization problem arising in a popular ring topology for communication networks - given a set of nodes connected along a bi-directional SONET ring, the objective is to minimize the maximum load on the edges (pairwise) of a ring. Our procedure includes some original features, including the application of Hybrid Differential Evolution. We also perform comparisons with standard differential evolution, genetic algorithm and tabu search.

The technological as well as software advances in microelectronics and embedded component design have led to the development of low cost, small-sized devices capable of forming wireless, ad-hoc networks and sensing a number of qualities of their environment, while performing computations that depend on the sensed qualities as well as information received by their peers. These sensor networks rely on the collective power of the separate devices as well as their computational and sensing capabilities to understand ldquoglobalrdquo environmental states through locally sampled information and local sensor interactions. Due to the locality of the sensor networks, that naturally arises due to the locality of their communications capabilities, a number of interesting connections exist between these networks and geometrical concepts and problems. In this paper we study two simple problems that pertain to the formation of low power and low interference communication patterns in fixed topology sensor networks. We study the problem of using multihop communication links instead of direct ones as well as the problem of forming a communication ring of sensor networks so as to reduce power consumption as well as interference from other nodes. Our focus is on the connection between sensor networks and geometrical concepts, rather than on practicality, so as to highlight their interrelationship.

The mobile cellular systems are expected to support multiple services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS).But, the ability of wireless systems to accommodate expected growth of traffic load and broadband services is limited by available radio frequency spectrum. Call admission control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. However, the decision for CAC is very challenging issue due to user mobility, limited radio spectrum, and multimedia traffic characteristics. In our previous work, we proposed a fuzzy-based CAC system and compared the performance of the proposed system with shadow cluster concept (SCC). In this work, we extend our work by considering the priority of the on-going connections. We evaluate by simulations the performance of the proposed system and compare its performance with our previous work. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed system has a good behavior in keeping the QoS of on-going connections.

Wireless mobile networks and devices are becoming increasingly popular to provide users the access anytime and anywhere. The mobile systems are based on cellular approach and the area is covered by cells that overlap each other. Many handover algorithms are proposed in the literature. However, to make a better handover and keep the QoS in wireless networks is very difficult task. For this reason, new intelligent algorithms should be implemented to deal with this problem. In this paper, we carried out a comparison study of two handover systems based on fuzzy logic. We implement two fuzzy-based handover systems (FBHS). We call them FBHS1 and FBHS2. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that FBHS2 has better behavior than FBHS2 and can avoid ping-pong effect in all simulation cases.
