An increasing number of studies have profiled gene expressions in tumor specimens using distinct microarray platforms and analysis techniques. With the accumulating amount of microarray data, one of the most challenging tasks is to develop robust statistical models to integrate their findings. We compare some recent methodologies on the field, with respect to ER status, and focus on a unified among platforms scale suggested by Parmigiani et al.(2002) and Shen et al.(2004), which is based on a Bayesian mixture model. Under this unified scale, we study the intensity similarities between four breast cancer data sets derived from various platforms. We evaluate our results with an independent data set in terms of ER sample clustering given the derived gene ER signatures of the integrated data. We found that intensity and fold-change variability similarities between different platform measurements can greatly assist the statistical analysis of independent microarray data sets.

This paper presents a fault diagnostic technique that is able to estimate the output filter condition of DC/DC boost and buck-boost converters. More than half of the breakdowns in these equipments are mainly due to the output filter capacitor. So, the development of fault diagnostic techniques that can avoid unexpected breakdowns is of paramount importance. The aging of the output filter capacitors is expressed by the increase of their internal resistance, that changes considerable with temperature. The proposed technique uses both input current and output voltage ripple to estimate capacitors internal resistance; for that, a very simple analytical relationship between both waveforms is used. The temperature effect is also considered for evaluating the capacitors condition.

This research intended to study the effects of utilizing games in health e-learning network on teaching third graders in elementary schools about nutrition. The studied groups of this research were 2 classes of 33 third graders; the two classes were separated into experimental and control group. The experiment was implemented in a four-week duration. The experimental group learned the knowledge of nutrition based on game playing on a national health e-learning network, whereas the control group was lectured with multi-media slide shows. During the learning process, the two groups underwent the steps of pretest, learning and posttest. The result revealed that students received better scores on nutrition knowledge test and dietary behavior assessments in the experimental group, which are evidence of the beneficial impact of health e-learning network's games on nutrition education and dietary behavior among elementary school students. This however, did not show much difference between the two groups in the assessment of nutrition attitude. Within the experimental group, the results did not differ much between the girls and boys in all three assessments.

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized P2P approaches to support learning and teaching activity in virtual *** this paper, we present the stimulation effects of the SmartBox for e-learning using JXTA-overlay P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of the SmartBox environment that is used for stimulating the learners motivation to increase the learning efficiency. The SmartBox is integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. We found by experimental results thatthe SmartBox is an effective way to increase the learner's concentration. We also investigated the relation between learner's body movement, concentration, and amount of study. We found that when the learner is solving more exerciseshe has more body *** shows that when the number of body movements is hight,the learner's concentration is high. We also consider the feasibility of our P2P platform to integrate different computational end-devices.

We study a new variant of the graph orientation problem called MAXMINO where the input is an undirected, edge-weighted graph and the objective is to assign a direction to each edge so that the minimum weighted outdegree (taken over all vertices in the resulting directed graph) is maximized. All edge weights are assumed to be positive integers. This problem is closely related to the job scheduling on parallel machines, called the machine covering problem, where its goal is to assign jobs to parallel machines such that each machine is covered as much as possible. First, we prove that MAXMINO is strongly NP-hard and cannot be approximated within a ratio of 2 = ¿ for constant ¿ > 0 in polynomial time unless P = NP, even if all edge weights belong to {2}, every vertex has degree at most three, and the input graph is bipartite or planar. Next, we show how to solve MAXMINO exactly in polynomial time for the special case in which all edge weights are equal to 1. This technique gives us a simple polynomial-time w max /w min - approximation algorithm for MAXMINO where w max and w min denote the maximum and minimum weights among all the input edges. Furthermore we also observe that this approach yields an exact algorithm for the general case of MAXMINO whose running time is polynomial whenever the number of edges having weight larger than w min is at most logarithmic in the number of vertices. Finally, we, show that MAXMINO is solvable in polynomial time if the input is a cactus graph.

Syllogistic reasoning is a form of deductive reasoning in which a logical conclusion is drawn from premises. Forward-chaining syllogistic reasoning refers to response pattern of figure 1 syllogism (M-P, S-M, S-P with response chain of S-M-P) and backward-chaining syllogistic reasoning refers to response pattern of figure 4 syllogism (P-M, S-M, S-P with response chain of P-M-S). Previous psychological studies show that forward-chaining is significantly higher accuracy and less response time, and backward-chaining is significantly lower accuracy and more response time. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. We carried out a study using event-related fMRI to clarify their neural substrates. Conjunction analysis showed common areas of activations were the bilateral caudate, the left ventral lateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), the left superior parietal lobule, and the right lingual gyrus. Direct comparisons showed distinct area of activation for forward-chaining in contrast to backward-chaining involved more activation in the left inferior parietal lobule, whereas backward-chaining in contrast to forward-chaining recruited the left dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the left medial frontal gyrus, and the right cerebellum. The results suggested that forward-chaining and backward-chaining syllogistic reasoning engaged distinct neural substrates based on common brain areas.

Investigating the effect of retinal oxygenation abnormalities in the development of common eye diseases requires accurate assessment of oxygen tension in retinal vasculatures. Estimation of oxygen tension in retinal capillaries using phosphorescence lifetime imaging is addressed in this paper. Separation from tissue and oxygen tension estimation is a more challenging task for capillaries when compared with large retinal vessels due to the finer structure and noise predominance in capillaries. An automated segmentation procedure is applied using the EM algorithm and noise contamination is reduced using a regularization method unlike previous approaches to capillary analysis where segmentation was done manually and noise contamination was ignored. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to the retinal image data acquired from rat eyes, and we show that the oxygen tension estimate of retinal capillaries falls in the physiologically expected range.

Many scheduling heuristics have been dedicated to either HC (Heterogeneous Computing) or Grid computing for the purpose of minimizing makespan. However, both the number and the heterogeneities of computers found in Grid computing are more complex than in HC. Two additional scenarios are included in this study to enhance the completeness of the experiment and to more closely approach real Grid computing situations. This study simulates experiments in a dynamic environment since the nature of Grid computing is dynamic. Min-min heuristic is the benchmark of such kinds of task and computer scheduling problems. In this study, the Min-minll dynamic scheduling heuristic is proposed that utilizes task deadline and task assignment time to testify that Min-minll can outperform Min-min makespan. © 2009 ISSN.

In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

One way of handling Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is based on the concept, that the robot acts like an animal companion to human. According to this paradigm the Robot should not be molded to mimic the human being, and form human-to-human like communication, but to follow the existing biological examples and form inter-species interaction. The 20.000 year old human-dog relationship is a good example for this paradigm of the HRI, as interaction of different species. One good reason of this approach in HRI is the lack of the "uncanny valley" effect i.e. increasing similarity of robots to humans will actually increase the chances that humans refuse interaction (will be frightened). In this paper, for ethologically inspired HRI model implementation, a fuzzy model structure built upon the framework of low computational demand Fuzzy Rule Interpolation (FRI) methods and fuzzy automaton is suggested. The application of FRI methods fits well the conceptually "spare rule-based" structure of the existing descriptive verbal ethological models. (In case of the descriptive verbal ethological models, the "completeness" of the rule-base is not required). The main benefit of the FRI method adaptation in ethological model implementation is the fact, that it has a simple rule-based knowledge representation format. Because of this, even after numerical optimization of the model, the rules are still "human readable", and helps the formal validation of the model by the ethological experts. On the other side due to the FRI base, the model has still low computational demand and fits directly the requirements of the embedded implementations. For demonstrating the applicability of the proposed structure, some components of a human-dog interaction FRI model, which also suitable for HRI, will be briefly introduced in this paper.
