Probabilistic protocols for fair communication in wireless sensor networks

In this work we present three new distributed, probabilistic data propagation protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks which aim at maximizing the network's operational life and improve its performance. The keystone of these protocols' design is fairness which declares that fair portions of network's work load should be assigned to each node, depending on their role in the system. All the three protocols, EFPFR, MPFR and TWIST, emerged from the study of the rigorously analyzed protocol PFR. Its design elements were identified and improvements were suggested and incorporated into the introduced protocols. The experiments conducted show that our proposals manage to improve PFR's performance in terms of success rate, total amount of energy saved, number of alive sensors and standard deviation of the energy left. Indicatively we note that while PFR's success rate is 69.5%, TWIST is achieving 97.5% and its standard deviation of energy is almost half of that of PFR. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first observation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.

This work presents a method of learning modal auxiliaries. In our method, two consecutive uses of modals are given as example sentences. These are beneficial for learners to recognize the flow of thought in context. We also present a method of extracting example sentences from a corpus. Here sentences in the corpus are parsed and analyzed to extract only the main clauses, which are essential parts to convey the flow of ideas. Extracted sentences are simplified and examples can be retrieved in many different situations, therefore, examples can be useful for both teachers and learners alike.

The ever-growing corpus of web content is now accessible from mobile devices. But is web content ready for mobile access? Which characteristics provide an acceptable user experience when using a mobile device? Based on W3C's MobileOK best practices and tests we present MokE (Mobile OK Evaluator), a tool that helps creators of web content, webmasters and site administrators to evaluate how a mobile user will experience browsing of their content. By making use of W3C's basic tests this tool is comprised of a set of modules that crawl a web site, analyze its content (including a hidden web capability) and provide an evaluation of its appropriateness for mobile access.

In this paper, we present the design and the implementation of a novel scheme for the multicast transmission of data over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. The proposed scheme is implemented as an ns-2 network simulator module which can be employed to investigate various aspects of UMTS multicast. Apart from the normal multicast transmission over UMTS, we consider the handling of exceptional cases induced by user mobility scenarios. The proposed scheme is in accordance with the current specifications of the Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Service (MBMS) defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and introduces minor modifications in the UMTS architecture and the mobility management mechanisms. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated and analyzed through simulation experiments. Finally, the simulation results are presented along with their analysis. Copyright © 2008 ICST.

Clustering techniques have been proposed to construct hierarchies of nodes inside Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) thereby increasing their scalability and manageability and reducing the amount of maintained routing information. Herein, we introduce a distributed clustering algorithm that uses both location and energy metrics for cluster formation. Our proposed solution addresses cluster stability, manageability and energy efficiency issues. Unlike existing active clustering methods, our algorithm relieves the network from the unnecessary burden of control messages broadcasting, especially for relatively static and quasi-static network topologies. The efficiency, scalability and competence of our algorithm against alternative approaches have been demonstrated through simulation results. Copyright © 2008 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

We propose a new statistical approach to the problem of inlier-based outlier detection, i.e., finding outliers in the test set based on the training set consisting only of inliers. Our key idea is to use the ratio of training and test data densities as an outlier score;we estimate the ratio directly in a semi-parametric fashion without going through density estimation. Thus our approach is expected to have better performance in high-dimensional problems. Furthermore, the applied algorithm for density ratio estimation is equipped with a natural cross-validation procedure, allowing us to objectively optimize the value of tuning parameters such as the regularization parameter and the kernel width. The algorithm offers a closed-form solution as well as a closed-form formula for the leave-one-out error Thanks to this, the proposed outlier detection method is computationally very efficient and is scalable to massive datasets. Simulations with benchmark and real-world datasets illustrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we present an improved approach integrating rules, neural networks and cases, compared to a previous one. The main approach integrates neurules and cases. Neurules are a kind of integrated rules that combine a symbolic (production rules) and a connectionist (adaline unit) representation. Each neurule is represented as an adaline unit. The main characteristics of neurules are that they improve the performance of symbolic rules and, in contrast to other hybrid neuro-symbolic approaches, retain the modularity of production rules and their naturalness in a large degree. In the improved approach, various types of indices are assigned to cases according to different roles they play in neurule-based reasoning, instead of one. Thus, an enhanced knowledge representation scheme is derived resulting in accuracy improvement. Experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness.

Case-based reasoning is a popular approach used in intelligent systems. Whenever a new case has to be dealt with, the most similar cases are retrieved from the case base and their encompassed knowledge is exploited in the current situation. Combinations of case-based reasoning with other intelligent methods have been explored deriving effective knowledge representation schemes. Although some types of combinations have been mostly explored, other types have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we briefly outline popular case-based reasoning combinations. More specifically, we focus on combinations of case-based reasoning with rulebased reasoning, soft computing and ontologies. We illustrate basic types of such combinations and discuss future directions.
