We consider dual subgradient methods for solving (nonsmooth) convex constrained optimization problems. Our focus is on generating approximate primal solutions with performance guarantees and providing convergence rate analysis. We propose and analyze methods that use averaging schemes to generate approximate primal optimal solutions. We provide estimates on the convergence rate of the generated primal solutions in terms of both the amount of feasibility violation and bounds on the primal function values. The feasibility violation and primal value estimates are given per iteration, thus providing practical stopping criteria. We provide a numerical example that illustrate the performance of the subgradient methods with averaging in a network resource allocation problem.

This paper proposes a method which gives a state space realization of the linear systems with algebraic loops not only in numerical format but also in symbolic format and guarantees that the order of the system is preserved. The method uses an adjacency matrix in graph theory for the modeling of the control systems and uses the matrix inversion lemma to calculate the inverse of matrix symbolically and to obtain the symbolic state space realizations. We have developed a new software platform for modeling and simulation of control systems using the proposed method.

Clustering is a data mining technique that allows the grouping of data points on the basis of their similarity with respect to multiple dimensions of measurement. It has also been applied in the software engineering domain, in particular to support software quality assessment based on source code metrics. Unfortunately, since clusters emerge from metrics at the source code level, it is difficult to interpret the significance of clusters at the level of the quality of the entire system. In this paper, we propose a method for interpreting source code clusters using the ISO/IEC 9126 software product quality model. Several methods have been proposed to perform quantitative assessment of software systems in terms of the quality characteristics defined by ISO/IEC 9126. These methods perform mappings of low-level source code metrics to high-level quality characteristics by various aggregation and weighting procedures. We applied such a method to obtain quality profiles at various abstraction levels for each generated source code cluster. Subsequently, the plethora of quality profiles obtained is visualized such that conclusions about different quality problems in various clusters can be obtained at a glance.

In this paper, electroencephalograph (EEG) signals recorded during miss operation of brain computer interface (BCI) system was analyzed. As a result, a feature difference between miss operation and normal operation was found at the low frequency component and the event-related potential (ERP) such as P300. Therefore a possibility of the modification of miss operation was confirmed.

Clinical guidelines usually need to be adapted to fit local practice before they can be actually used by clinicians. Reasons for adaptation include variations of institution setting such as type of practice and location, availability of resources, differences in patient populations, local policies, and practice patterns. When a guideline is implemented for clinical decision support and integrated with an institution's clinical information system, the data model of the local electronic medical record (EMR) and the data actually collected and stored in it also influence the guideline's adaptation. The purpose of this work is: (1) to characterize a tool-supported process for guideline encoding that addresses local adaptation and EMR integration, and (2) to identify the types of changes in guideline encoding during the local adaptation process. © 2008 The authors and IOS Press. This paper deals with the application of a method developed for the compensation of harmonic currents generated by nonlinear loads, connected to the utility grid, using three phase dc/ac converters. The converters are supplied by renewable power sources, i.e. they are part of a Distributed Generation System. Nonlinear load current harmonics are compensated by a voltage oriented control (VOC). Current control is performed directly on the grid current so no additional current sensors are needed for ensuring sinusoidal grid current. The proposed method has been verified both by computer simulation and experimentally on a test setup where the control algorithm is implemented in a computer embedded card (dSPACE). © 2008 IEEE.

Mobile agents (MAs) have been initially developed to replace the client/server model which shows many disadvantages in WSN environments (e.g. very high bandwidth and energy utilization). Herein, we present CBID (Clone-Based Itinerary Design), a novel algorithm that calculates near-optimal routes for MAs that incrementally fuse the data as they visit the nodes while enabling a fast update of designed itineraries which is especially important for highly dynamic topologies. The order of visited nodes highly affects the quality and the overall cost of data fusion. The key MAs characteristic exploited by CBID to reduce energy consumption and response time is their cloning capability. Parallel dispatched MAs sequentially visit sensor nodes arranged in tree structures and upon visiting a node with two or more child nodes, the MAs (master MAs) clone of themselves with each clone (slave MA) visiting a tree branch. When all slave MAs return to that node, report their data to the master MA and are self-destroyed. This results in highly reduced energy consumption and response time since many MAs work in parallel. Simulation results prove the high effectiveness of CBID in data fusion tasks compared to other alternative algorithms.

We introduce Adaptive Smooth Multicast Protocol (ASMP), for multimedia transmission over best-effort networks. The smoothness lays in the calculation and adaptation of the transmission rate, which is based on dynamic estimation of protocol parameters and dynamic adjustment of the ldquosmoothness factorrdquo. ASMP key attributes are: (a) adaptive scalability to large sets of receivers, (b) TCP-friendly behavior, (c) high bandwidth utilization, and finally (d) smooth transmission rates, which are suitable for multimedia applications. We evaluate the performance of ASMP and investigate its behavior under various network conditions through extensive simulations, conducted with the network simulator software (ns2).

We present two architectures for implementing optical buffers. Both use multi-wavelength selective elements like quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) as multi-wavelength converters and fixed-length delay lines that are combined to form both an output queuing and a parallel buffer switch design. The output queuing buffer design requires less active devices (QD-SOA) when implementing large buffers, but the parallel buffer design becomes more profitable, when the number of wavelength channels that can be simultaneously processed by the wavelength selective switches (QD-SOAs) increases. This is because the number of active devices depends only on the buffer size. We also proposed scheduling algorithm to resolve packet contention in parallel buffer architecture and carried out a simulation considering mean packet delay, maximum buffer occupancy and packet loss probability.
