We consider methods to visually compare graphs, more to focus on the differences of the graphs than on the similarities. Our two-level approach constructs a meaningful overview of the given graphs combined with a detailed view focusing on a local area of change. The actual layout of these graphs has to be evaluated depending on the specific type of biological network to be visualized in each case. Feature-based flow visualization is naturally dependent on feature extraction. To extract flow features, often higher-order properties of the flow data are used such as the Jacobian or curvature properties, implicitly describing the flow features in terms of their inherent flow characteristics (e.g., collinear flow and vorticity vectors). In this paper we present recent research which leads to the (not really surprising) conclusion that feature extraction algorithms need to be extended to a time-dependent analysis framework (in terms of time derivatives) when dealing with unsteady flow data. Accordingly, we present two extensions of the parallel vectors based vortex extraction criteria to the time-dependent domain and show the improvements of feature-based flow visualization in comparison to the steady versions of this extraction algorithm both in the context of a high-resolution dataset, i.e., a simulation specifically designed to evaluate our new approach, as well as for a real-world dataset from a concrete application. © 2006 IEEE.

The ultimate purpose of a pedestrian-detection system (PDS) is to reduce pedestrian-vehicle-related injury. Most such systems tend to adopt expensive sensors, such as infrared devices, in expectation of better performance. In comparison, a low-cost optical-camera-based system has much potential practical value, including a greater detection range, and can easily be trained to detect other objects. However, such low-cost systems are difficult to design (e.g., little original information can be collected, and the scene is very complex). To address these problems, an effective and reliable classifier is needed. The classifier should have a proper structure, its features need to be well selected, and a large number of high-quality samples are necessary for training. In this paper, we present a low-cost PDS which only uses a single optical camera. We design a cascade classifier to achieve an effective and reliable detection. First, our system scans two sequential frames at each zoom scale with a sliding window. Second, with each window, both appearance and motion features are extracted. A well-trained cascade classifier, combining statistical learning with a decomposed support-vector-machine classifier, then determines whether the window contains a human body. At the same time, to provide as much information as possible about the pedestrian, a small-scale weighted template tree trained by a coevolutionary algorithm is adopted to identify each pedestrian's direction, and the distance of each from the vehicle is also provided using an estimation algorithm. During the training procedure, we select key features by using the AdaBoost algorithm and a large number of high-quality samples. Experimental results demonstrate that the system is suitable for pedestrian detection in city traffic: The detection speed is more than 10 ft/s, the detection rate reaches 80%, and the false positive rate is no more than 0.3‰. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the JXTA-based e-Learning P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of a smart box environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency. The smart box is intended to be integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. Finally, it is also useful to evaluate the feasibility of our P2P platform to integrate different computational devices.

Internet traffic demands are constantly increasing and a considerable amount is expected to be of multicast type. Optical Transport Networks (OTN) must be prepared in terms of better resource utilization, for accommodating unicast and multicast traffic together. Dynamic traffic grooming in optical mesh networks is one of the most important and practical problems for designing Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based networks. Light-trees have been proposed for supporting multicast connections in OTN. Nevertheless when Traffic Grooming is applied in light-trees, resources can be underutilized as traffic can be routed to undesirable destinations in order to avoid Optical-Electrical-Optical (OEO) conversions. In this paper, a novel architecture named S/G Light-tree for supporting unicast/multicast connections is used. The architecture allows traffic dropping and aggregation in different wavelengths without performing OEO conversions. An on-line heuristic that routes traffic demands minimizing blocking probability by taking advantage of the architecture is proposed. Simulation results show that the architecture improves blocking probability and minimizes the number of used wavelengths when compared to light-trees.

In this paper, we consider the performance behavior of two protocols: AODV and DSR using TwoRayGround model. We study the routing efficiency of the ad-hoc sensor network and compare the performance of two protocols for different scenarios using the routing efficiency concept. By computer simulations, we found that the routing efficiency of DSP protocol is better than AODV protocol.

Quantum computing algorithms are considered for several problems in graph theory. Classical algorithms involve searching over some space for finding the minimal spanning tree problem in a graph. We modify classical Primpsilas algorithm and replace quantum search instead of classical search, of which it will lead to more efficient algorithm. Also we proposed the structure for non-classical algorithms and design the various phases of the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm for classical and quantum parts. Finally, we represent the result of implementing and simulating Primpsilas algorithm in the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm.
