The breadth of biological data collected in the last decade has far outstripped the methods available to process it. To effectively investigate and explore this abundance of data, novel automated collection and analysis approaches must be devised. We have developed a new open software framework, the Open Genomic Analysis Platform (OGAP), to aid in the analysis of genomic data. It is capable of analyzing a variety of data source, and focuses on using information theory to characterize data. The frameworks has is capable of import a variety of genome tied data, and provides custom analysis and visualization of results. We then demonstrate the use of this framework analyzing the Prochlorococcus Marinus organism. We show a strong correlation between the information content of sequence data and up regulation of gene expression during lytic infection.

In mobile cellular systems the handover is a very important process to maintain the desired Quality of Service (QoS). Many handover algorithms are proposed in the literature. However, to make a better handover and keep the QoS in wireless networks is very difficult. In this paper, by using random walk model and fuzzy theory we propose a new handover system. The proposed system uses 3 parameters for handoff decision: signal strength from the present Base Station (BS), signal strength from the neighbor BS, and the distance between Mobile Station (MS) and BS. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that proposed system can avoid ping-pong effect and has a good handover decision.

We propose a hybrid quantum computing scheme where qubit degrees of freedom for computation are combined with quantum continuous variables for communication. In particular, universal two-qubit gates can be implemented deterministically through qubit-qubit communication, mediated by a continuous-variable bus mode (“qubus”), without direct interaction between the qubits and without any measurement of the qubus. The key ingredients are controlled rotations of the qubus and unconditional qubus displacements. The controlled rotations are realizable through typical atom-light interactions in quantum optics. For such interactions, our scheme is universal and works in any regime, including the limits of weak and strong nonlinearities.

This paper introduces a network architecture called Vehicular Wireless Burst Switching (VWBS). The main objective of this architecture is to provide low-cost connectivity solution for isolated and dispersed regions with no networks infrastructure. The proposed architecture is based on the concept of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) and can be applied to various scenarios, including rapid deployment of emergency communication systems when all communication links have failed. In this paper, we present an overview of VWBS networks and show how their performance, in terms of average packet delays, can be improved using store-and-forward devices called relay nodes. Furthermore, we introduce several heuristic algorithms, which can be used to place minimum number of relay nodes. Through computer simulations, we compare the performance of the algorithms and their tradeoffs. We conclude our work by examining possible open research issues in VWBS.

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network’s communication energy dissipation. However, the selection of cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbor nodes. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

As mobile devices are becoming increasingly powerful and ubiquitous, new possibilities to get route guidance are created, allowing users to save valuable time and effort. However, mobile devices still face severe constraints that limit the possibilities that a mobile route finding application may offer. In this paper, we present a device independent mobile application that enables mobile users to receive route directions to their handheld device. This application is an extension to an existing mobile map delivery system, the m-CHARTIS system. We focus on the main features and we analyse the device independent character of the application. Implementation details are presented and finally directions for future work are proposed.

The field of Statistics is a conceptually rich domain where information is complex, huge in volume, and highly valuable and critical for Governmental institutes. The daily production of statistical information increases exponentially worldwide, making the processing of all this information a very difficult and time - consuming task. Therefore, efficient search, filtering and browsing techniques are needed to access and process statistical data in an effective way. We present semantically enhanced search approach to enhance e-Govemment searching services. We evaluate our proposals on the case of Intrastat, that is the method of collecting information and producing statistics on the export and import of goods between Member States of the European Union (EU), providing added - value web search services. We employ Semantic Web technologies to create an intelligent search engine based on modeling the systems' electronic catalogue using the OWL ontology language, combined with AJAX techniques for usability richness and responsiveness. We present a search tool based on these technologies, that consists of a) our novel ontology for the EU Combined Nomenclature codes serving as a knowledge base, b)a semantically enhanced search and recommendation module that improves the quality of the results and c) a "Search as you type" visualization and navigation module to provide a usable interface to be used in navigation and search.

In this work we present the basic concepts in the architecture of a peer-to-peer environment for monitoring multiple wireless sensor networks, called ShareSense. ShareSense, which is currently under development, uses JXTA as a peer-to-peer substrate. We demonstrate its basic functionalities using a simple application scenario, which utilizes multiple disparate wireless sensor networks. This application scenario involves monitoring of such networks using a separate management environment and a custom application GUI, as well as using Google Earth as an additional user interface.
