This paper proposes a multicast scheme for the packet forwarding mechanism in the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The scheme relies on the introduction of the Permanent Multicast Routing List (PMRL) and Temporary Multicast Routing List (TMRL) in each node of the network except UEs. In the PMRL we record the nodes of the next level that the messages for every multicast group should be forwarded. The TMRL is useful for the temporary record of information from the path from the mobile users to the GGSN. Additionally, a Multicast Group List (MGL) is kept in the GGSN which records the members of each multicast group. These lists lead to the decrement of the transmitted packets and the more efficient use of the network resources in the multicast routing in UMTS. We analyze the exact steps that the multicast packets are transmitted to the members of each multicast group. Furthermore, special issues such as joining/leaving a multicast service are described. While mobile phones are becoming more popular, wireless communication vendors and device manufacturers are seeking new applications for their products. Access to the large corpus of Internet information is a very prominent field, however the technical limitations of mobile devices pose many challenges. Browsing the Internet using a mobile phone is a large scientific and cultural challenge. Web content must be adapted before it can be accessed by a mobile browser. In this work we build on the proxy server solution to present a new technique that uses Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds for the adaptation of web content for use in mobile phones. This technique is based in concrete design guidelines and supports different viewing modes. Experimentation shows a significant decrease in the transformed content of about 80% in size facilitating cost-effective web browsing. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Garbage collection is traditionally not used in real-time systems due to the unpredictable temporal behavior of current implementations of a garbage collector. However, without garbage collection the programming model is very different from standard Java. It is the opinion of the authors that garbage collection algorithms can be adapted to meet even the requirements for hard real-time systems. One important property of a real-time garbage collector is to identify only the real roots on the root scan. Misinterpreting primitive values as false root pointers can result in an unpredictable worst case memory consumption. In this paper we propose a method to add information on the stack layout to the runtime data structure in order to find the roots exactly. Furthermore, interpreting this information during the collection process is implemented to be worst-case execution time analyzable. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In this paper we propose a solution for a worst-case execution time (WCET) analyzable Java system: a combination of a time predictable Java processor and a tool that performs WCET analysis of Java bytecode. We present a Java processor, called JOP, designed for time-predictable execution of real-time tasks. JOP is an implementation of the Java virtual machine (JVM) in hardware. The execution time of bytecodes, the instructions of the JVM, is known cycle accurate for JOP. Therefore, JOP simplifies the lowlevel WCET analysis. A method cache, that fills whole Java methods into the cache, is analyzable with respect to the WCET. The WCET analysis tool is based on integer linear programming. The tool performs the low-level analysis at the bytecode level and integrates the method cache analysis for a two block cache. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Purpose - The paper aims to discuss the critical issue of learning and knowledge convergence in knowledge-intensive organizations, and to provide practical guidelines for effective strategies. Design/methodology/approach - The paper brings together previous research in knowledge management and provides a critique for the lack of integration of previous studies with learning, a key process for efficient knowledge management. Stemming from this critique, an integrative framework for knowledge management support from a learning perspective is proposed. Findings - The major contribution is the framework for knowledge management support from a learning perspective, which can guide strategies of effective knowledge and learning management. This framework initiates an interesting discussion of technological issues that can enhance current knowledge management practices. Research limitations/implications - The taxonomy of knowledge management systems provides the basis for an extensive specification of knowledge management strategies. Further research could focus on an instrumental approach to the integrative framework suggested in this paper, to illustrate how it can be used to enhance the integration of learning processes and products in the knowledge management process. Practical implications - The paper is a very useful source of information and impartial advice for strategists, knowledge management officers and people interested in implementing learning and knowledge management in a knowledge-intensive organization. Originality/value - This paper presents a novel taxonomy of knowledge management systems from a learning perspective. Unlike previous literature on knowledge management, this paper makes an explicit claim for integrating knowledge management and learning activities and illustrates how the two can be jointly supported by various knowledge management systems.
