Artificial Intelligence techniques, such as optimization algorithms, have become essential for success in many fields. Therefore, most researchers, especially in computer and engineering sciences, focused their efforts and abilities on adapting the optimization algorithms for solving various problems. This review introduces one of the recent nature-inspired optimization algorithms, called black widow optimization (BWO). This review highlights the main procedures of BWO, its strengths and weaknesses, the growth of BWO, the variants of BWO (i.e., binary, modification, and hybridization), and the efficiency of BWO in different fields and applications (i.e., feature selection, medical, image processing, engineering, IoT, power and energy, and networks). As a result, the review seeks to assist researchers who are interested in using the BWO to address their challenges. For instance, it could help manage large pilgrim crowds, enabling smoother ritual performances and overcoming potential difficulties they encounter. Also, it suggests new possible ways of enhancing the efficiency of the basic BWO. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

The objective of this study was to implement an explainable artificial intelligence (AI) model with embedded rules to assess Multiple Sclerosis (MS) disease evolution based on brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) multi-scale lesion evaluation. Amplitude Modulation-Frequency Modulation (AM-FM) features were extracted from manually segmented brain MS lesions obtained using MRI and were labeled with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Machine learning models were used to classify the MS subjects with a benign course of the disease and subjects with advanced accumulating disability. Rules were extracted from the selected model with high accuracy and then were modified to perform argumentation-based reasoning. It is demonstrated that the proposed explainable AI modeling can distinguish MS subjects and give meaningful information to track the progression of the disease. Future research will examine more subjects and add new feature sets and models.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rethinking the model for building the smart cities, and this paper makes just such a step in that direction. It then examines various ways of cutting urban pollution. Under increasing pressure from rising urbanization, smart cities represent a huge leap forward in regard to efficiency, scalability and livability. The key is IoTtechnology, which collects and analyzes data in real time and allows for more quick-witted and intelligent urban governance. This paper combines literature review, case study analysis and data-driven methods to focus on the opportunities offered by IoT applications for restructuring urban traffic systems and pollution control. This study explains what is missing in modern smart city initiatives, and offers a road map for bringing Internet of things solutions to municipal systems. The results can also serve as some answers to cope with the dilemma and bring more intelligence, cleanness, efficiency in making a city into a smart metropolis. The article ends by highlighting the significance of IoT for future urban development, and ideas for further research into this complex yet rapidly evolving area. © 2024 IEEE.

Text-driven Online Action Detection

Detecting actions as they occur is essential for applications like video surveillance, autonomous driving, and human-robot interaction. Known as online action detection, this task requires classifying actions in streaming videos, handling background noise, and coping with incomplete actions. Transformer architectures are the current state-of-the-art, yet the potential of recent advancements in computer vision, particularly vision-language models (VLMs), remains largely untapped for this problem, partly due to high computational costs. In this paper, we introduce TOAD: a Text-driven Online Action Detection architecture that supports zero-shot and few-shot learning. TOAD leverages CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining) textual embeddings, enabling efficient use of VLMs without significant computational overhead. Our model achieves 82.46% mAP on the THUMOS14 dataset, outperforming existing methods, and sets new baselines for zero-shot and few-shot performance on the THUMOS14 and TVSeries datasets. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

A serious, all-encompassing, and deadly cancer that affects every part of the body is skin cancer. The most prevalent causes of skin lesions are UV radiation, which can damage human skin, and moles. If skin cancer is discovered early, it may be adequately treated. In order to diagnose skin lesions with less effort, dermatologists are increasingly turning to machine learning (ML) techniques and computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems. This paper proposes a computerized method for multiclass lesion classification using a fusion of optimal deep-learning model features. The dataset used in this work, ISIC2018, is imbalanced; therefore, augmentation is performed based on a few mathematical operations. After that, two pre-trained deep learning models (DarkNet-19 and MobileNet-V2) have been fine-tuned and trained on the selected dataset. After training, features are extracted from the average pool layer and optimized using a hybrid firefly optimization technique. The selected features are fused in two ways: (i) original serial approach and (ii) proposed threshold approach. Machine learning classifiers are used to classify the chosen features at the end. Using the ISIC2018 dataset, the experimental procedure produced an accuracy of 89.0%. Whereas, 87.34, 87.57, and 87.45 are sensitivity, precision, and F1 score respectively. At the end, comparison is also conducted with recent techniques, and it shows the proposed method shows improved accuracy along with other performance measures.

Iris segmentation and localization in unconstrained environments are challenging due to long distances, illumination variations, limited user cooperation, and moving subjects. Some existing methods in the literature have somehow mitigated some of the above-mentioned issues. In this paper, motivated by these weaknesses, we propose a framework that employs a deep neural network-based approach to iris segmentation and localization. The proposed framework is based on a U-Net architecture initialized with a pre-trained MobileNetV2 model. In addition, to better study the detectors in iris recognition scenarios, we have collected 1000 images. The provided dataset (KartalOl) is made publicly available for the research community. In the proposed framework, to have better generalization, we fine-tuned the MobileNetV2 model on the provided data for NIR-ISL 2021 from the CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, and CASIA-Iris-Africa and our dataset. Likewise, data augmentation techniques are applied on images. We chose the binarization threshold for the binary masks by iterating over the images in the provided dataset. The proposed framework is trained and tested in CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, and CASIA-Iris-Africa, along with the KartalOl dataset. The experimental results highlight that our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on mobile-based benchmarks. Leveraging Highly Approximated Multipliers in DNN Inference

In this work, we present a control variate approximation technique that enables the exploitation of highly approximate multipliers in Deep Neural Network (DNN) accelerators. Our approach does not require retraining and significantly decreases the induced error due to approximate multiplications, improving the overall inference accuracy. As a result, our approach enables satisfying tight accuracy loss constraints while boosting the power savings. Our experimental evaluation, across six different DNNs and several approximate multipliers, demonstrates the versatility of our approach and shows that compared to the accurate design, our control variate approximation achieves the same performance, 45% power reduction, and less than 1% average accuracy loss. Compared to the corresponding approximate designs without using our technique, our approach improves the accuracy by 1.9x on average. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to domain shift, a large performance drop is usually observed when a trained crowd counting model is deployed in the wild. While existing domain-adaptive crowd counting methods achieve promising results, they typically regard each crowd image as a whole and reduce domain discrepancies in a holistic manner, thus limiting further improvement of domain adaptation performance. To this end, we propose to untangle domain-invariant crowd and domain-specific background from crowd images and design a fine-grained domain adaption method for crowd counting. Specifically, to disentangle crowd from background, we propose to learn crowd segmentation from point-level crowd counting annotations in a weakly-supervised manner. Based on the derived segmentation, we design a crowd-aware domain adaptation mechanism consisting of two crowd-aware adaptation modules, i.e., Crowd Region Transfer (CRT) and Crowd Density Alignment (CDA). The CRT module is designed to guide crowd features transfer across domains beyond background distractions. The CDA module dedicates to regularising target-domain crowd density generation by its own crowd density distribution. Our method outperforms previous approaches consistently in the widely-used adaptation scenarios.

LSTM and CNN hybrid model for enhanced fingerprint recognition

The paper introduces an advanced hybrid model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to enhance fingerprint detection and matching within large datasets. The CNN component is employed for feature extraction and learning from image data, while the LSTM component is utilized for sequence prediction in temporal series, yielding optimal results compared to existing methods based on specific criteria. This hybrid approach achieves a fingerprint recognition accuracy of 99.85 %. The proposed method effectively reduces errors in recognition and false rejection rates in fingerprint recognition systems, thereby improving overall usability and security. The integration of CNN and LSTM in fingerprint recognition signifies a substantial advancement in biometric authentication technology, with potential applications in law enforcement, border security, and access control systems. © 2025

Disturbances in circadian rhythms have been recently associated with a variety of healthy states and psychiatric pathologies. Therefore, estimating the degree of circadian rhythm disturbance is important for discriminating psychiatric disorders from healthy conditions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) allows to detect brain activity directly, but the recorded signal combines neural activity across multiple time scales. The complexity of brain activity across multiple time scales has been previously quantified using multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis. In this study, we investigated whether MSE analysis of EEG data can detect circadian rhythms. Our results show that in the daytime, the complexity of brain activity is increased at larger temporal scale, and that MSE analysis detects these changes more accurately than conventional power analysis. Because complexity at large temporal scales arises from the long-range connectivity in brain networks, we suggest that the decrease in this EEG pattern complexity by night is mediated by melatonin, which suppresses neural firing and reduces wide-range interactions between brain regions. Our method can be applied for the EEG-based analysis of circadian rhythms in longitudinal studies and may help to diagnose healthy states and psychiatric conditions. © 2021 IEEE.
