The Greek School Network (GSN) provides support to students, teachers, and school units in secondary education across Greece. Handling numerous user queries manually can be challenging, necessitating the development of an automated system for accurate categorization of these queries. This paper presents a comparative study of various transformer-based models for multi-class text categorization of Greek language queries submitted to the GSN helpdesk. We introduce a new experimental balanced dataset and extract vector representations from eleven transformer-based models. These representations are evaluated using ten classic machine learning classifiers. Our findings highlight the superior performance of the Multilingual E5 Text Embeddings model, particularly when paired with the extreme gradient-boosting classifier. This combination demonstrates a clear advantage in accurately categorizing user queries, paving the way for more efficient automated helpdesk systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Malware detection constitutes a fundamental step in safe and secure computational systems, including industrial systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). Modern malware detection is based on machine learning methods that classify software samples as malware or benign, based on features that are extracted from the samples through static and/or dynamic analysis. State-of-the-art malware detection systems employ Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) whose accuracy increases as more data are analyzed and exploited. However, organizations also have significant privacy constraints and concerns which limit the data that they share with centralized security providers or other organizations, despite the malware detection accuracy improvements that can be achieved with the aggregated data. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of federated learning (FL) methods for developing and distributing aggregated DNNs among autonomous interconnected organizations. We analyze a solution where multiple organizations use independent malware analysis platforms as part of their Security Operations Centers (SOCs) and train their own local DNN model on their own private data. Exploiting cross-silo FL, we combine these DNNs into a global one which is then distributed to all organizations, achieving the distribution of combined malware detection models using data from multiple sources without sample or feature sharing. We evaluate the approach using the EMBER benchmark dataset and demonstrate that our approach effectively reaches the same accuracy as the non-federated centralized DNN model, which is above 93%. © 2023 IEEE.

Malware detection is fundamental to smart city cyberphysical systems, considering their requirements for safety which is dependent on their security. Malware detection systems extract features from software samples through static and/or dynamic analysis and classify them as malware or benign, based on the features. Modern malware detection systems employ Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) whose accuracy increases as more data are analyzed and exploited. However, data sharing among organizations, even for malware, is limited due to privacy and intellectual property constraints. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of vertical federated learning (VFL) for developing aggregated DNNs among autonomous interconnected organizations. We analyze a solution where multiple organizations use independent malware analysis platforms as part of their Security Operations Centers (SOCs) and train their own local DNN model on their own private data. Employing a DNN, we investigate VFL scalability in terms of the number of participants, considering accuracy and training execution time as the determining factors. We evaluate the approach using the EMBER benchmark dataset and demonstrate that the accuracy of a centralized model is achieved by VLF as well, independently of the number of clients, while training execution time scales linearly for the evaluated federation sizes and remains within acceptable bounds for adoption in practice. Furthermore, we evaluate the achieved accuracy per client (federation member) demonstrating that individual accuracy is significantly smaller per client. The significant improvement in accuracy that clients achieve by participating in the federation provides strong motivation for clients to participate in the federation, while FL provides them with the necessary privacy that is achieved by sharing features rather than samples. © 2023 IEEE.

In the dynamic landscape of online social networks, recognizing sensitive content is essential for safeguarding user privacy, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing diversity awareness. Building on prior research, this study explores new dimensions and methodologies for detecting sensitive content. We examine the temporal evolution of sensitive content, revealing how patterns shift over time, and address cross-linguistic challenges, emphasizing cultural and contextual nuances in detection. We employ advanced machine learning techniques, including deep learning models and BERT that improve the accuracy and robustness of the detection procedure. In the experimental study, BERT transformer reported the best performance in detecting sensitive content in text. Additionally, we incorporate explainability techniques such as LIME and SHAP to provide deeper insights into the model's decision-making processes, ensuring predictions are interpretable and reliable. Our work enhances the theoretical framework of sensitive content detection in social networks and provide methods that are accurate and scalable and can facilitate the creation of user-centric interaction that prioritize privacy and user experience. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a methodology for drones for recognizing different types of objects in maritime areas. The concept and the aim is to assist the national maritime surveillance authorities in the identification of treats and the recognition of the exact type of the treat. The methodology relies on the use of deep learning networks and YOLO framework as well as regression models. The YOLO model detects where each object is and which label should be applied. In this way, object detection is subject to the analysis of Machine Learning-based approaches and Deep Learning-based approaches providing more information about the video or an image than traditional approaches to recognition. These approaches are used to identify groups of pixels that may individually belong to an object. This then feeds a regression model with the help of a convolutional neural network and more specifically, R-CNN, Fast R-CNN, Faster R-CNN and after that object detection algorithm approximates the location of the object and gives its label at the same time. The purpose of the application is to detect objects with an emphasis on identifying one or more targets of interest from data of a video or an image capture. An experimental study was conducted in real-world conditions and revealed quite interesting findings. © 2023 IEEE.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered significant attention from the research community during the last decade, due to their diverse capabilities and potential applications. One of the most critical functions that drones must execute efficiently is navigation in real-world environments. This paper presents a decentralized approach for enabling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to navigate safely in unknown environments and avoid obstacles. Leveraging the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) algorithm, implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS), our method facilitates conflict detection and resolution in 2D environments. Through simulations using ROS, Gazebo, and Iris drones, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in scenarios with initial trajectory conflicts. Our work addresses the pressing need for UAVs to autonomously plan and execute safe flights, laying the groundwork for enhanced UAV capabilities in various real-world applications. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our approach. © 2024 IEEE.

The BART model is an advanced adaptation of transformers introduced by Facebook. It has incorporated elements from both BERT and GPT transformers, enabling significant advancements in language understanding and general speech processing. Utilizing both encoder and decoder components, BART proves versatile for various tasks, including translation, text completion, automatic sentence generation, entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and more. In this study, we focus on the study of pretrained models, BART and a modified version called distilbart, in the context of Zero-Shot Text Classification. In the experimental study we dive into the Zero-Shot technique applied to various pretrained Transformers. Our analysis demonstrates that, depending on the Model we utilize, we can achieve F1 scores of up to 88%, showcasing the model's effectiveness in discerning classes for this Sentiment Analysis problem using the Zero-Shot Text Classification technique. © 2023 IEEE.

Ahstract-Zero-shot text classification leverages pre-trained transformer models to categorize texts without the need for task-specific training. This paper analyzes a variety of transformer-based pre-trained methods on the task of zero-shot text classi-fication. Specifically, we present a deep comparative analysis of various transformer models, such as BART, DeBerta, DistiIBART, RoBERTa, and their variants, and evaluate their performance in various zero-shot text classification schemes. Furthermore, we examine the models' generalization capabilities. The findings highlight key strengths and weaknesses of each model, providing insights into their suitability for different text categorization tasks. Our research contributes to the broader understanding of transformer-based approaches and offers guidance for selecting models for zero-shot text classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Recognizing the emotional content of Natural Language sentences can improve the way humans communicate with a computer system by enabling them to recognize and imitate emotional expressions. In this paper, deep learning, deep neural networks as well as Transformers were examined. Specifically, we designed and developed deep learning methods and BERT-based implementations for recognizing emotional content in user-generated data. Extensive experiments were conducted using these models on a variety of textual data and all the designed methods were evaluated. The results of the study show that BERT achieved the best overall performance, getting an F1-score of 0.86 on the Twitter Data dataset. Also, the Bi-LSTM with Attention Mechanism and Bi-LSTM using Word2vec performed quite well, achieving F1-scores of 0.83 and 0.82, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.
