This work presents a complete face authentication system integrating 2D intensity and 3D range data, based on a low-cost, real-time structured light sensor. Novel algorithms are proposed that exploit depth data to achieve robust face detection, localization and authentication under conditions of background clutter, occlusion, face pose alteration and harsh illumination. The well known embedded hidden Markov model technique for face authentication is applied to depth maps. A method for the enrichment of face databases with synthetically generated views depicting various head poses and illumination conditions is proposed. The performance of the proposed system is tested on an extensive face database of 3,000 images. Experimental results demonstrate significant gains resulting from the combined use of depth and intensity.

An appearance-based face authentication system integrating 2D color or intensity images and 3D data is presented. The proposed system is based on a low-cost 3D and color sensor, capable of synchronous real-time acquisition of 3D images and associated color images. Novel algorithms are proposed that exploit depth information and prior knowledge of face geometry and symmetry to achieve robust face detection, localization and authentication under conditions of background clutter, occlusion, face pose alteration and harsh illumination. A method for the enrichment of face databases with synthetically generated views depicting variations in pose and illumination is proposed to cope with head rotations and illumination variations, avoiding a cumbersome enrolment process. The performance of the proposed authentication scheme is tested thoroughly on a face database of 1500 images, recorded with the 3D acquisition system. Experimental results demonstrate significant gains resulting from the combined use of depth and color or intensity information, in comparison to the use of 2D images alone.

Fault detection and isolation is a challenging task in the control of large scale complex systems. In this work we proceed to the fault diagnosis of an electric power transmission system based on a fault diagnosis of hybrid systems method presented in our previous work. Power systems often exhibit complex behavior in response to large disturbances. Such behavior is characterized by interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete events. Components such as loads drive the continuous dynamics, while other components such as protection devices exhibit event-driven discrete dynamics. Therefore, power systems constitute an important case of hybrid systems for fault detection.

One of well-known routing protocol for ad hoc networks is zone routing protocol (ZRP). The performance of ZRP is better than other protocols. However, many useless control packets are used resulting in the increase of network load and decrease of network performance. In this paper, we propose a selective border-casting zone routing protocol (SBZRP) to reduce the network load by limiting the number of control packets when the protocol searches for a new route. An improved genetic algorithm based on information entropy is presented in this paper. As a new iteration scheme in conjunction with multi-population genetic strategy, entropy-based searching technique with narrowing down space and the quasi-exact penalty function is developed to solve nonlinear programming (NLP) problems with equality and inequality constraints. A specific strategy of reserving the fittest member with evolutionary historic information is effectively used to approximate the solution of the nonlinear programming problems to the global optimization. Numerical examples show that the proposed method has good accuracy and efficiency.

This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult and to find a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. GridSpeed is a grid portal hosting server that automatically generates and publishes a customized Web interface to the grid for applications, with minimal effort required from the user. Users need only to specify information regarding their application using simple GridSpeed Web forms. With GridSpeed, users need not make any modifications to their applications nor write any glue code to publish the application on the Web, not requiring any knowledge of Perl, JSP (Java server pages) or Java servlets. Moreover, the portal generated by GridSpeed provides an application frontend as well as a set of fundamental portal services such as an information service, monitoring service, data management, single sign-on, and so forth. GridSpeed publishes a set of portals as grid services themselves generated by the system that is shamble, searchable, and accessible from others interested in using the application. This feature facilitates the reuse of application portals for specific application domains, as well as increases the number of available grid applications accessible on the Web. This work describes an overview and architecture of the GridSpeed system, and evaluates the system for two real-world scientific applications: BLAST and MCell.
