Contemporary simulation technology for neuronal networks enables the simulation of brain-scale networks using neuron models with a single or a few compartments. However, distributed simulations at full cell density are still lacking the electrical coupling between cells via so called gap junctions. This is due to the absence of efficient algorithms to simulate gap junctions on large parallel computers. The difficulty is that gap junctions require an instantaneous interaction between the coupled neurons, whereas the efficiency of simulation codes for spiking neurons relies on delayed communication. In a recent paper [15] we describe a technology to overcome this obstacle. Here, we give an overview of the challenges to include gap junctions into a distributed simulation scheme for neuronal networks and present an implementation of the new technology available in the NEural Simulation Tool (NEST 2.10.0). Subsequently we introduce the usage of gap junctions in model scripts as well as benchmarks assessing the performance and overhead of the technology on the supercomputers JUQUEEN and K computer. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Through a detailed analysis of the theoretical basis for MOOCs in terms of educational learning theories, this paper attempts at finding the corresponding relationship between the theories and MOOCs, which not only theoretically explains the reasons why MOOCs exceed all the previous education models, but also empirically proves it with voluminous facts and data. The author conducts this research in the hope of enlightening the online education platform of other types. Besides, this paper provides the model framework and strategy to multidimensional educational review based on MOOCs. The model and strategy are applicable not only to MOOCs, the large-scale online education, but also to various online education platforms.

This paper presents a multi-level approach for self-organization of in cyber-physical system resources. Cyber-physical system consists of physical part and cyber part. For implementation of joint actions by devices in physical part, they have to interact in cyber part. It is proposed to use the smart space technology for exchange information between these devices in cyber part of cyber-physical system. Smart Space -- is a computational environment consisting of multiple heterogeneous services (electronic and computational devices, Internet pages, data based, etc.) which has intelligent behavior, can proactively provide information taking into account current situation. Smart spaces allow unifying different levels of services, implement self-organization of services in each level, and providing politics from upper to lower level. Self-organization on every level is implemented based on ontology-based context management techniques and ontology matching method that provides semantic interoperability between interacted robots. Discussed in the paper case study solve the task of self-organization three types of robots based on politics from operation planning services and context situation in smart space. For the scenario implementation the Smart-M3 information sharing platform is used. It provides easy-to-use interfaces for information sharing through the RDF ontologies and publish / subscribe mechanism for connected services.

Learner-Centered Design of Computing Education: Research on Computing for Everyone

Computing education is in enormous demand. Many students (both children and adult) are realizing that they will need programming in the future. This book presents the argument that they are not all going to use programming in the same way and for the same purposes. What do we mean when we talk about teaching everyone to program? When we target a broad audience, should we have the same goals as computer science education for professional software developers? How do we design computing education that works for everyone? This book proposes use of a learner-centered design approach to create computing education for a broad audience. It considers several reasons for teaching computing to everyone and how the different reasons lead to different choices about learning goals and teaching methods. The book reviews the history of the idea that programming isn’t just for the professional software developer. It uses research studies on teaching computing in liberal arts programs, to graphic designers, to high school teachers, in order to explore the idea that computer science for everyone requires us to re-think how we teach and what we teach. The conclusion describes how we might create computing education for everyone.

The overwhelming acceptance of social media creates opportunities to learn about facts and events that are echoed in posts, tweets and messages uploaded by users. Analysis of these data can lead to interesting observations and conclusions. Of special importance are aspects related to temporal and dynamic nature of these findings. This paper presents a simple fuzzy-based approach of pre-processing and analyzing Twitter hashtags. The obtained fuzzy clusters are further examined in order to gain insight related to temporal trends and patterns of hashtags' popularity.

The popularity of virtual worlds has increased in recent years, as they have begun to feature a three-dimensional (3D) environment, avatars, and synchronous and asynchrounous communication. However, to successfully use virtual world platforms in different disciplines, certain limitations and potential difficulties of these platforms must be overcome. The purpose of this study was both to determine technical problems encountered by practitioners and designers who create environments in 3D virtual worlds and to suggest solutions for these problems. In the study, designers experimented with two different 3D virtual world platforms for one year, to design and create learning environments. The case study method was used as a research model. To collect the research data, interview records and documents in which the designers and practitioners noted problems that they encountered were used. The results indicate that the technical problems influenced the pedagogical effectiveness of the environments. Our findings should be beneficial both to virtual world designers and to users who wish to use these environments in different fields.

In this paper, 2-steps software using image processing and enhancement technologies is developed to obtain a scoliosis patient's spine pattern from 2D coronal X-Ray images without manual land marking. Work-life balance (WLB) can be described as the fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities of workers in their private and business lives in addition to minimizing the conflicts between business and private lives. This can be achieved with self-scheduling of workers only by allocating fair time for private life as well as work life. In enterprises, the workers demand, starting time and working hours of a job can vary according to the nature of the job done and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of workers. The main idea of this study is to develop a method which is balancing between work and private life by considering a self-scheduled working plan regulated systematical as far as weekly or monthly determining qualities and quantities of doctors and nurses to fulfill the needs for different departments of a hospital, considering the number of patients at different hours of a day. In this study, a prototype software was developed to fulfil the requirement of workers and enterprises for balancing work-life considering demands of workers and employers. The developed software can record the numbers and attributes of required personnel to a database according to daily, weekly or monthly demands. The current numbers and attributes of workers then requirements of the employer are entered into the database. Then, workers can choose their work times by considering day and hours from this database. The developed software reconciles the needs of the enterprise and personnel demands with synchronizing the needed working hours of enterprise and selection of personnel. Work assignments are done by personnel requests. Personnel decides their own working time so that monthly and weekly schedules can be obtained. The software is coded in Ms C# programming language and is applied in a hospital. Optical character recognition(OCR) can be used in some management mechanisms of state and business world to organize documents scanned or captured by camera. Therefore, OCR is one of the subjects rapidly evolving in the recent times. This study investigates the procedure steps until character recognition. That's because, the more correctly preprocessings are applied;the better results can be obtained in character recognition. In this study, the algorithms providing the best results are determined by following the procedure stages of gray scale transformation, noise removal and image thresholding. Binarization plays an important role in character recognition. For this reason, algorithms dynamically determine thresholds are preferred for character recognition in this study. Accordingly, Otsu thresholding method was determined to give the best results in terms of both picture quality and speed. Therefore, this method was used for character recognition. Primarily, lines were determined for character separation and then letters were individually obtained.

In this work, classification of cellular structures in the high resolutional histopathological images and the discrimination of cellular and non-cellular structures have been investigated. The cell classification is a very exhaustive and time-consuming process for pathologists in medicine. The development of digital imaging in histopathology has enabled the generation of reasonable and effective solutions to this problem. Morever, the classification of digital data provides easier analysis of cell structures in histopathological data. Convolutional neural network (CNN), constituting the main theme of this study, has been proposed with different spatial window sizes in RGB color spaces. Hence, to improve the accuracies of classification results obtained by supervised learning methods, spatial information must also be considered. So, spatial dependencies of cell and non-cell pixels can be evaluated within different pixel neighborhoods in this study. In the experiments, the CNN performs superior than other pixel classification methods including SVM and k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN). At the end of this paper, several possible directions for future research are also proposed.
