TRANSIT-EEG - A Framework for Cross-Subject Classification with Subject Specific Adaptation

Electroencephalography (EEG) is pivotal in monitoring and analysing cerebral activity across diverse domains, including medical diagnostics, cognitive neuroscience, and brain-computer interfaces. However, the inherent intricacy of EEG signals and their subject-specific characteristics pose formidable challenges in devising robust and generalisable classification models. Traditional EEG signal classification paradigms rely on extensive subject-specific datasets. Also, the domain adaption for new subjects often leads to "catastrophic forgetting,"thereby diminishing the performance of model trained on prior subjects. This paper proposes a novel framework, Transfer and Robust Adaptation of New Subjects in EEG technology (TRANSIT-EEG), designed to adapt adeptly to new subjects. TRANSIT-EEG demonstrates resilience to subject-specific artefacts by integrating synthetic data generation using the proposed subject-specific augmentation model - Individualised Diffusion Probabilistic Model (IDPM). Also, it employs a robust Self Organising Graph Attention Transformer (SOGAT) that dynamically constructs a graph for each subject, fostering a more accurate classification. Moreover, TRANSIT-EEG introduces adapter-based finetuning using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) for new subjects, enriching the adaptation process. The TRANSIT-EEG framework presents a promising avenue for advancing the realm of EEG signal classification. Evaluation of widely studied datasets, specifically focusing on two significant tasks, SEED for Emotion Recognition and PhyAat for Auditory Activity Recognition, substantiates the efficacy and versatility of TRANSIT-EEG. This validation indicates a substantial stride toward achieving more generalisable and accurate EEG signal classification. © 2016 IEEE.

The right to be forgotten has incentivized machine unlearning, but a key challenge persists: the lack of reliable methods to verify unlearning conducted by model providers. This gap facilitates dishonest model providers to deceive data contributors. Current approaches often rely on invasive methods like backdoor injection. However, it poses security concerns and is also inapplicable to legacy data—already released data. To tackle this challenge, this work initializes the first non-invasive unlearning verification framework which operates at triple-granularity (class-, volume-, sample-level) to assess the data facticity and volume integrity of machine unlearning. In this paper, we propose a framework, named TruVRF, encompasses three Unlearning-Metrics, each tailored to counter different types of dishonest model providers or servers (Neglecting Server, Lazy Server, Deceiving Server). TruVRF leverages non-invasive model sensitivity to enable multi-granularity verification of unlearning. Specifically, Unlearning-Metric-I checks if the removed class matches the data contributor’s unlearning request, Unlearning-Metric-II measures the amount of unlearned data, and Unlearning-Metric-III validates the correspondence of a specific unlearned sample with the requested deletion. We conducted extensive evaluations of TruVRF efficacy across three datasets, and notably, we also evaluated the effectiveness and computational overhead of TruVRF in real-world applications for the face recognition dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that TruVRF achieves robust verification performance: Unlearning-Metric-I and -III achieve over 90% verification accuracy on average against dishonest servers, while Unlearning-Metric-II maintains an inference deviation within 4.8% to 8.2%. Additionally, TruVRF demonstrates generalizability across diverse conditions, including varying numbers of unlearned classes and sample volumes. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset for air conditioner refrigerant leak smoke detection, called ACRL-10K. The dataset is designed to develop algorithms for detecting refrigerant leak smoke faults during air conditioner recycling. It contains a total of 10, 724 images covering three common scenarios of air conditioner refrigerant leak: loading port, refrigerant extraction, and disassembly. All images are sourced from 656 video segments of real air conditioner recycling scenarios, captured by surveillance cameras deployed on an environmental company's recycling production line. The annotations for the refrigerant leak smoke in the images are performed by industry experts to ensure high accuracy and consistency. To the best of our knowledge, ACRL-10K is the first dataset specifically designed for refrigerant leak smoke detection. Based on the ACRL-10K dataset, we present the performance of mainstream object detectors, including the YOLO series, as a baseline to conduct the following work: 1) preliminarily summarize the challenges of using the dataset for refrigerant leak smoke detection;2) show the detection results of benchmark methods;and 3) make a comparison to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the baseline algorithms. In practice, the ACRL-10K dataset would hopefully advance research and applications in refrigerant leak early warning during air conditioner dismantling and recycling processes. © 2025 IEEE.

An efficient and balanced feature pyramid network: shared-FPN

In the field of object detection， it is challenging to achieve a balance between neck complexity and accuracy. To address this issue， we propose an efficient and decoupled neck module called Shared-FPN(Shared Feature Pyramid Network). Our design aims to effectively address the trade-off between these two factors. Neck modules are crucial for effectively fusing multi-scale information in neural network models. However， traditional neck designs， with their single structure， have struggled to significantly improve detection performance. In recent years， the incorporation of neural architecture search techniques in neck design has led to an increase in model complexity. This trade-off between model complexity and detection performance highlights the need for more efficient neck design approaches. Not only does Shared-FPN not increase the number of model parameters and FLOPs， but it also can be easily ported to any of the detection models. It improves on PAFPN by using transposed convolution with a large convolution kernel as the upsampling module， designing spatial pyramidal pooling-fast downsampling(SPPFD) based on shared pooling， and designing shared convolution as the right part module. To evaluate the performance of Shared-FPN in object detection tasks， we conducted experiments on object detection datasets. The results show that Shared-FPN achieved excellent performance across all sizes. In particular， on the VOC 2012 dataset， which contains mostly large objects， Shared-FPN's mAP was improved by 11.2% compared to FPN with YOLOX-s as the detector. On the COCO dataset， which contains mostly small objects， Shared-FPN's mAP was improved by 7.8% compared to FPN and 7.1% compared to PAFPN with Faster RCNN as the detector. Shared-FPN can be easily inserted into any of the detectors for better performance in various scenarios， such as small， medium or large objects.

Frequent road incidents cause significant physical harm and economic losses globally. The key to ensuring road safety lies in accurately perceiving surrounding road incidents. However, the highly dynamic nature of traffic introduces significant challenges, particularly in detecting sudden and temporary incidents. In this article, we propose a novel detection framework, multihead attention ResNet with dynamic bottleneck (DB_RESNET_MHA), to identify physical unsigned road incidents. Our approach introduces three key innovations. First, we develop a tailored data augmentation strategy to create images that closely mimic the complex variations found in real-world road environments. Second, we enhance model expressiveness by employing attention mechanisms to nonlinearly integrate convolutional kernels within the residual network. Furthermore, we refine the prediction head by applying spatially distinct attention weights, enabling the model to capture intricate correlations between different features more effectively. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we create a dataset for unsigned road incidents (UnsignRI), comprising a total of 16 323 images that capture 12 distinct types of incidents. It stands out as the most comprehensive dataset in the field, encompassing a wide range of geographical features and incident categories. Experimental results show that DB_RESNET_MHA achieves an average accuracy of 96.2% and a f1-score of 0.955 across various categories of unsigned incidents, surpassing other models. © 2020 IEEE.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine-metabolic disorder affecting about 10-13% of women during reproductive age worldwide, often leads to irregular menstruation, infertility, obesity, and long-term health risks such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In this paper, clinical data from PCOS patients and healthy control group were collected from ten hospitals containing 37 key indicators such as age, weight, BMI, menstrual cycle, etc. BP (Back Propagation) Neural Network prediction models were constructed and compared using the collected data and the cross-validation method was used for parameter tuning. It was found that BP Neural Network performed particularly well on the test set, and both demonstrated high prediction accuracy and generalization ability which provided strong evidence for the early identification and early valuable intervention opportunities for PCOS patients. © 2025 IEEE.

Perceiving scene depth and 3D structure is one of the key tasks for Internet of Video Things (IoVT) devices to understand and interact with the environment. Self-supervised monocular depth estimation has demonstrated significant potential in leveraging large-scale unlabeled datasets to achieve competitive performance, thereby playing an increasingly important role in depth estimation. Despite recent methods providing additional supervisory signals through self-distillation strategies to improve depth estimation, an effective method for generating pseudo-depth labels suitable for addressing occlusion issues among elements far from the camera remains unexplored. To address this limitation, we propose a Patch-based Self-Distillation Learning Framework to exploit the potential of self-supervised monocular depth estimation in recovering fine-grained scene depth. In the proposed framework, elements far from the camera within the input image are enlarged by enlarging and cropping operations in the patch-based self-distillation branch. Guided by photometric consistency, the model learns the detailed occlusion relationships among elements from the enlarged patches, producing patch depth maps with fine structures. In the main branch, which takes full-scale images as input, patch depth maps serve as pseudo-depth labels through self-distillation loss to provide additional supervisory signals for regions where photometric consistency fails to offer effective supervision. This forces the depth estimation network to recover fine structures of elements far from the camera in full-scale input images. Regarding the architecture of the depth estimation network, we introduce a bin-center prediction. In this prediction, a global aggregator based on self-attention provides additional scene structure queries for adaptive scene depth discretization. In mobile systems, memory can be compressed page-by-page to save space. This approach is widely adopted because memory data is accessed by page. However, this paper shows that the system response speed is significantly limited by page-grained compression. In this paper, we observe that approximately a quarter of anonymous memory pages are highly correlated, even though the association is implicit. Inspired by this, we propose Archer, an association-rule-aware memory compression framework in mobile systems. Archer demonstrates that memory in mobile devices should be compressed using flexible granularity, rather than relying solely on traditional page compression. To further integrate association-rule mining techniques into system design, we redesign the LRU mechanism and propose an adaptive memory compression region. Experimental results show that the average app launching speed is 1.55x faster when enabling Archer, and the average photographic speed and frame rate increase by 1.42x and 1.31x, respectively, compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2025 FAST. Multi-scale convolutional fusion network embedded with improved attention mechanism for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar image classification

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely applied in the field of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification and have achieved good classification results. However, due to the complexity of polarimetric information, traditional CNN structures are difficult to fully extract and integrate information from multiple polarimetric channels, resulting in insufficient feature diversity, which limits further improvement in classification accuracy. To this problem, this article proposes a multi-scale convolutional fusion network (MCF-Net). MCF-Net employs convolutional kernels of various sizes to perform parallel convolutions, extracting multi-scale features and optimally fusing them, thereby greatly enhancing the diversity and completeness of feature representation. In addition, to enhance the network's focus on important features and suppress irrelevant information, this article proposes an improved squeeze-and-excitation (SE) module, guided by mean, entropy, and Z-score (MEZ-SE), to weigh the importance of feature maps. By embedding the MEZ-SE module into MCF-Net, MEZ-MCF-Net significantly improves the completeness of feature representation and enhances the ability to distinguish different land cover categories. On the Flevoland, San Francisco, and Oberfaffenhofen PolSAR datasets, the overall accuracy of MEZ-MCF-Net exceeds that of the second-best method by 3.04%, 2.09%, and 1.99%, respectively. There is no doubt that MEZ-MCF-Net is an effective method for PolSAR image classification. © 2025 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming numerous domains, including bioinformatics and information extraction systems, by advancing data processing capabilities, enhancing precision, and facilitating automation. The primary aim of this research is to examine the function of AI within the realms of bioinformatics and information extraction through a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative component involved a sample of 152 participants, recognised as experts in bioinformatics and data science. The survey findings underscore the prevalent integration of AI in bioinformatics, particularly through the utilisation of reinforcement learning, neural networks, and natural language processing (NLP). Furthermore, AI substantially improves the analysis of biological data;however, it encounters challenges such as limited model interpretability and the lack of data standardisation. Notwithstanding these obstacles, AI-driven innovations in disease prognosis, personalised healthcare, and pharmaceutical development are anticipated to shape the future trajectory of bioinformatics. The qualitative findings, derived through thematic analysis encompassing core themes and sub-themes, reveal that AI significantly contributes to accelerating and refining information extraction processes. Technologies such as machine learning, NLP, and neural networks are instrumental in enhancing data processing efficiency. Nonetheless, issues such as inadequate data quality, elevated computational expenses, and the intricacy of AI models remain persistent. Looking ahead, AI is projected to integrate more effectively with big data infrastructures, enable real-time information extraction, and deliver increasingly tailored solutions. The study concludes with several policy recommendations to guide future implementation strategies. © 2025 Regional Association for Security and crisis management. All rights reserved.
