This study constitutes an effort in identifying a class of unbounded coordinate transformations for vector linear time-varying systems of the form x/spl dot/=A(t)x. Main results of this paper include: (i) the definition and properties of meromorphic D-similarity transformations, (ii) two theorems on stability preserving meromorphic transformations. The results appear to be somewhat restrictive, but certainly shed some light on this intriguing yet difficult problem.< >

The significant disadvantage for traditional contour representation is as the resolution is reduced the effort of undersampling is proportional enlarged. The goal of this study is to improve edge detection results, especially for those corner points in low resolution. This study describes a method, which is based on 4-connected pixel-wise linearization, for finding contours from low resolution video images. This allows a more accurate inspection and identification of objects from image data. In practice, geometrical models are used to manipulate this linearization. A method is employed for examining the corner points as well.< >

A prototype of an optical-electronic histogram generator has been designed and tested for 1-D objects. In this scheme, the object to be analyzed is laser scanned. The resulting optical signal is detected by a photodetector which generates an electrical signal output which is subsequently analyzed with a combination of analog and digital electronics. The system has shown to be fairly modular in design. Various aspects of the extension of the design to two dimensions is discussed.< >

It is shown how estimates of local structure and orientation can be obtained using a set of spherically separable quadrature filters. The method is applicable to signals of any dimensionality the only requirement being that the filter set spans the corresponding orientation space. The estimates produced are second order tensors, the size of the tensors corresponding to the dimensionality of the input signal. A central part of the algorithm is an operation termed 'tensor whitening' reminiscent of classical whitening procedures. This operation compensates exactly for any biases introduced by non-uniform filter orientation distributions and/or non-uniform filter output certainties. Examples of processing of 2D-images, 3D-volumes and 2D-image sequences are given. Sensitivity to noise and missing filter outputs are analyzed in different situations. Estimation accuracy as a function of filter orientation distributions are studied. The studies provide evidence that the algorithm is robust and preferable to other algorithms in a wide range of situations.< >

A Monte Carlo simulation technique, for estimating the partition function of a general Gibbs random field image, is proposed. By expressing the partition function as an expectation, an importance sampling approach for estimating it using Monte Carlo simulations is developed. As expected, the resulting estimators are unbiased and consistent. Computations can be performed iteratively, by using simple Monte Carlo algorithms, with remarkable success, as demonstrated by simulations. The work concentrates on binary, second-order Gibbs random fields, defined on a rectangular lattice. However, the proposed methods can be easily extended to more general Gibbs random fields. Their potential contribution to optimal parameter estimation and hypothesis testing problems, for general Gibbs random field images, via a likelihood approach, is anticipated.

The kinematics model of multilink robot manipulator involves solution of the inverse problem. The use of fuzzy logic based linguistic rules demonstrates superior performance over classical, computationally intensive and yet approximate solutions for the target position control and tracking control of multilink robot arm. A new approach to fuzzy distance and restriction measures is used to obtain the appropriate orientations of the links for avoiding obstacles in the robot trajectories. This approach eliminates the classical task of solving highly coupled, nonlinear equations describing the illposed inverse problems of multilink robot motion at a much less demanding computational time. Such clear advantage of fuzzy logic based adaptive controller are illustrated by simulation results of guidance of a multilink robot in target positioning and trajectories tracking. The simulation results involve a threelink robot arm with capability of moving from one position to any desired position and tracking defined trajectories accurately. A modified fuzzy rule based distance measure allows the robot to follow trajectories without hitting the obstacles in the path. The simulation results indicate the advantage of fuzzy logic based adaptive controllers in multiple criteria decision-making tasks. © 1993 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Generalized Hermite Polynomials are used in a novel way to arrive at a multi-layered representation of images. This representation, which is centred on the creation of a new class of wavelet arrays, is (i) distinct from what we find in the current literature, (ii) stable, and (iii) in the manner of standard transforms, transforms the image, explicitly, into matrices of coefficients, reminiscent of Fourier series, but at various scales, controlled by a scale parameter. Among the other properties of the wavelet arrays, (a) the shape of the resolution cell in the 'phase-space' is variable even at a specified scale, depending on the nature of the signal under consideration;and (b) a systematic procedure is given for extracting the zero-crossings from the coefficients at various scales. This representation has been successfully applied to both synthetic and natural images, including textures.

The use of mathematical morphology in low- and mid-level image processing and computer vision applications has allowed the development of a class of techniques for analyzing shape information in color images. These techniques have shown to be useful in image enhancement, segmentation, and analysis. In this paper, we develop and test scalable parallel algorithms necessary to implement a class of morphological filters on a parallel computer, specifically, the MasPar MP-1. We examine the issues relative to the parallel implementation of the algorithms and show that real-time enhancement of high resolution color images is possible. © 1993 SPIE. All rights reserved.

The computation of 3-D structure from motion using a monocular sequence of images in the paradigm of active vision is investigated in this paper. Robotic tasks such as navigation, manipulation, and object recognition all require 3-D description of scene. The 3-D description for these tasks varies in resolution, accuracy, robustness, range, and time. In developing such a system, it must have the capability to actively control the imaging parameters so that a 3-D description sufficient enough for that task is generated. The objective of this paper is to investigate a strategy suitable for fast and active 3-D structure estimation. First, the process of 3-D structure estimation in the paradigm of active vision is discussed. Second, implication of image streams in 3-D structure computation is analyzed. The three approaches to structure from motion, feature based, optical flow based, and spatial and temporal gradient based, are reviewed for their efficacy in fast and active estimation of 3-D structure. Finally, a pipeline based implementation of a spatial and temporal gradient based approach is presented alongwith detailed experimental analysis. © 1993 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Binocular stereo, vergence stereo, and depth from focus have been extensively studied in isolation in the past for extraction of depth. These passive approaches have there oivn strengths and limitations. All these cues differ in their input image requirements, computational requirements, and the quality and nature of results they provide. None of them by themselves is sufficient to reliably extract depth information from a wide variety of scenes. It is evident an integrated system ivhich employs multiple cues and exploits their strengths would be most critical for developing a robust depth extraction system. Active vision paradigm alloivs us to develop such a system where various depth cues cooperate to derive the 3-D structure of the scene. In this, the integration would be accomplished by active intelligent control of the acquisition processes tightly coupled to the analysis of image data. One of the uniqueness of our integration approach is that while previous approaches have used a single primitive stereo system, typically edgel based, we have chosen a novel multi-primitive hierarchical(MPH) system. In MPH model, stereo analysis is performed in multiple stages, incorporating multiple primitives, utilizing a hierarchical control strategy. The MPH stereo system consists of three integrated subsystems: region based analysis module;linear edge segment based analysis module;and edgel based stereo analysis module. The use of regions and edge segments in addition to the edgel based analysis add a new dimension to the extraction of depth from stereo images. In fact, even in an integrated multiple cue based system, an edgel based binocular stereo approach alone is insufficient to process a variety of scenes. The reliance of different primitives at various levels makes MPH stereo analysis ideal for use in an integrated multiple cue based depth extraction system. © 1993 SPIE. All rights reserved.
