The 2nd International Workshop on Statistical Methods in Video Processing, SMVP 2004, was held in Prague, Czech Republic, as an associated workshop of ECCV 2004, the 8th European Conference on computervision. A total of 30 papers were submitted to the workshop. Of these, 17 papers were accepted for presentation and included in these proceedings, following a double-blind review process. The workshop had 42 registered participants. The focus of the meeting was on recent progress in the application of - vanced statistical methods to solve computervision tasks. The one-day scienti?c program covered areas of high interest in vision research, such as dense rec- struction of 3D scenes, multibody motion segmentation, 3D shape inference, errors-in-variables estimation, probabilistic tracking, information fusion, optical ?owcomputation,learningfornonstationaryvideodata,noveltydetectionin- namic backgrounds, background modeling, grouping using feature uncertainty, and crowd segmentation from video. We wish to thank the authors of all submitted papers for their interest in the *** external reviewers for their commitment of time and e?ort in providing valuable recommendations for each submission. The1stand2ndInternationalConferencesonFunctionalImagingandModelling of the Heart (FIMH) were held in Helsinki, Finland, in November 2001, and in Lyon, France, in June 2003. These meetings were born through a fruitful sci- ti?c collaboration between France and Finland that outreached to other groups and led to the start of this biennial event. The FIMH conference was the ?rst attempt to agglutinate researchers from several complementary but often i- lated ?elds: cardiac imaging, signal and image processing, applied mathematics and physics, biomedical engineering and computer science, cardiology, radi- ogy, biology, and physiology. In the ?rst two editions, the conference received an enthusiastic acceptance by experts of all these communities. FIMH was ori- nally started as a European event and has increasingly attracted more and more people from the US and Asia. This edition of FIMH received the largest number of submissions so far with a result of 47 papers being accepted as either oral presentations or posters. There were a number of submissions from non-EU institutions which con?rms the growing interest in this series of meetings. All papers were reviewed by up to four reviewers. The accepted contributions were organized into 8 oral sessions and 3 poster sessions complemented by a number of invited talks. This year we tried to allocate as many papers as possible as oral presentations to facilitate more active participation and to stimulate multidisciplinary discussions.

The conference series was initiated at a 1993 meeting of the SPIE in San Jose, with subsequent meetings hosted every two years by researchers around the world. Previous meetings were held in York, Chicago, Nijmegen, Toronto, Bremen, and North Carolina. It is interesting to re?ect on the changes that have occurred during the past 13 years. Then, the dominant technology was ?lm-screen mammography; now it is full-?eld digital mammography. Then, there were few screening programmes world-wide; now there are many. Then, there was the hope that computer-aided detection (CAD) of early signs of cancer might be possible; now CAD is not only a reality but (more importantly) a commercially led clinical reality. Then, algorithmswerealmostentirelyheuristicwithlittleclinicalsupport;nowthereis arequirementforsubstantialclinicalsupportforanyalgorithmthatisdeveloped and published. However, upon re?ection, could we have predicted with absolute certainty what would be the key questions to be addressed over the subsequent (say) six years? No! That is the nature, joy, and frustration of research. There are more blind alleys to explore than there are rich veins that bring gold (in all senses of that analogy!).

The ability of a robot to build a persistent, accurate, and actionable model of its surroundings through sensor data in a timely manner is crucial for autonomous operation. While representing the world as a point cloud might be sufficient for localization, denser scene representations are required for obstacle avoidance. On the other hand, higher-level semantic information is often crucial for breaking down the necessary steps to autonomously complete a complex task, such as cooking. So the looming question is, What is a suitable scene representation for the robotic task at hand? This survey provides a comprehensive review of key approaches and frameworks driving progress in the field of robotic spatial perception, with a particular focus on the historical evolution and current trends in representation. By categorizing scene modeling techniques into three main types—metric, metric–semantic, and metric–semantic–topological—we discuss how spatial perception frameworks are transitioning from building purely geometric models of the world to more advanced data structures incorporating higher-level concepts, such as the notion of object instances and places. Special emphasis is placed on approaches for real-time simultaneous localization and mapping, their integration with deep learning for enhanced robustness and scene understanding, and their ability to handle scene dynamicity as some of the hottest topics of interest driving robotics research today. We conclude with a discussion of ongoing challenges and future research directions in the quest to develop robust and scalable spatial perception systems suitable for long-term autonomy.
