Learning continuous network emerging dynamics from scarce observations via data-adaptive stochastic processes

Learning network dynamics from the empirical structure and spatio-temporal observation data is crucial to revealing the interaction mechanisms of complex networks in a wide range of domains. However,most existing methods only aim at learning network dynamic behaviors generated by a specific ordinary differential equation instance, resulting in ineffectiveness for new ones, and generally require dense *** observed data, especially from network emerging dynamics, are usually difficult to obtain, which brings trouble to model learning. Therefore, learning accurate network dynamics with sparse, irregularly-sampled,partial, and noisy observations remains a fundamental challenge. We introduce a new concept of the stochastic skeleton and its neural implementation, i.e., neural ODE processes for network dynamics(NDP4ND), a new class of stochastic processes governed by stochastic data-adaptive network dynamics, to overcome the challenge and learn continuous network dynamics from scarce observations. Intensive experiments conducted on various network dynamics in ecological population evolution, phototaxis movement, brain activity, epidemic spreading, and real-world empirical systems, demonstrate that the proposed method has excellent data adaptability and computational efficiency, and can adapt to unseen network emerging dynamics, producing accurate interpolation and extrapolation with reducing the ratio of required observation data to only about 6% and improving the learning speed for new dynamics by three orders of magnitude.

Secure beamforming and deployment design for rate-splitting multiple access-based UAV communications

Rate-splitting multiple access(RSMA) has recently gained attention as a potential robust multiple access(MA)scheme for upcoming wireless networks. Given its ability to efficiently utilize wireless resources and design interference management strategies, it can be applied to unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) networks to provide convenient services for large-scale access ground users. However, due to the line-of-sight(LoS) broadcast nature of UAV transmission, information is susceptible to eavesdropping in RSMA-based UAV networks. Moreover, the superposition of signals at the receiver in such networks becomes complicated. To cope with the challenge, we propose a two-user multi-input single-output(MISO) RSMA-based UAV secure transmission framework in downlink communication networks. In a passive eavesdropping scenario, our goal is to maximize the sum secrecy rate by optimizing the transmit beamforming and deployment location of the UAV-base station(UAV-BS),while considering quality-of-service(QoS) constraints, maximum transmit power, and flight space limitations. To address the non-convexity of the proposed problem, the optimization problem is first decoupled into two subproblems. Then, the successive convex approximation(SCA) method is employed to solve each subproblem using different propositions. In addition, an alternating optimization(AO)-based location RSMA(L-RSMA) beamforming algorithm is developed to implement joint optimization to obtain the suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that(1) the proposed L-RSMA scheme yields a28.97% higher sum secrecy rate than the baseline L-space division multiple access(SDMA) scheme;(2) the proposed L-RSMA scheme improves the security performance by 42.61% compared to the L-non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA) scheme.

VSMCNN-dynamic summarization of videos using salient features from multi-CNN model

A dynamic video summarization system detects key parts of the input video to generate its compact representation. The summaries can be used for efficient management of video data. This paper proposes an approach, Video summarization based on multi-CNN model (VSMCNN), that exploits major aspects of human cognition to generate meaningful summaries from videos. As the method focuses on dynamic summarization, the input video is divided into a set of shots. A multi-CNN model, which is a combination of different pre-trained models of CNN, is used for feature extraction from shots. The salient features are extracted from high dimensional feature vector using an unsupervised feature reduction technique applied in multiple subspaces to rank features in the vector. The distance measure between feature vectors is then thresholded to detect prime parts of the tested video. Experiments are performed on SumMe dataset and the results prove that our approach is successful in detecting portions of the tested video that has an essential message. The analysis shows that the method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in the literature. Further evaluation on comparison with human-generated summaries in the ground truth proves the effectiveness of the proposed method. The paper also presents a detailed analysis to show which combination of pre-trained models of CNN is best suitable for generating dynamic summaries. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

MMInstruct: a high-quality multi-modal instruction tuning dataset with extensive diversity

Despite the effectiveness of vision-language supervised fine-tuning in enhancing the performance of vision large language models(VLLMs), existing visual instruction tuning datasets include the following limitations.(1) Instruction annotation quality: despite existing VLLMs exhibiting strong performance,instructions generated by those advanced VLLMs may still suffer from inaccuracies, such as hallucinations.(2) Instructions and image diversity: the limited range of instruction types and the lack of diversity in image data may impact the model's ability to generate diversified and closer to real-world scenarios outputs. To address these challenges, we construct a high-quality, diverse visual instruction tuning dataset MMInstruct,which consists of 973k instructions from 24 domains. There are four instruction types: judgment, multiplechoice, long visual question answering, and short visual question answering. To construct MMInstruct, we propose an instruction generation data engine that leverages GPT-4V, GPT-3.5, and manual correction. Our instruction generation engine enables semi-automatic, low-cost, and multi-domain instruction generation at 1/6 the cost of manual construction. Through extensive experiment validation and ablation experiments,we demonstrate that MMInstruct could significantly improve the performance of VLLMs, e.g., the model fine-tuning on MMInstruct achieves new state-of-the-art performance on 10 out of 12 benchmarks. Due in part to global warming, the frequency of wildfires has increased in recent years, significantly impacting humans, wildlife, and forest ecosystems. To address this challenge, using technology for early fire detection through smoke can help firefighters and other stakeholders limit their spread and reduce the impact. In this research, we adopt the latest object detection model - YOLOv8 and use a fine-tuned version for detecting smoke and fire using the latest datasets. YOLOv8 backbone begins with two convolutional (Conv) layers, followed by a series of alternating Conv layers and C2F modules, and ends with a Spatial Pyramid Pooling - Fast (SPPF) module. Our improvement involves adding two extra Conv layers at the beginning of the backbone, between the alternating sequence of Conv and C2F layers. As the smoke and fire detection problem involves searching for smaller objects in the image, increasing the feature extraction layers improves the performance of smoke and fire detection. The fine-tuned model is tested with the FASDD v4 dataset, which depicts fire, smoke, non-fire, and non-smoke scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-object tracking (MOT) is one of the most important problems in computer vision and a key component of any vision-based perception system used in advanced autonomous mobile robotics. Therefore, its implementation on low-power and real-time embedded platforms is highly desirable. Modern MOT algorithms should be able to track objects of a given class (e.g. people or vehicles). In addition, the number of objects to be tracked is not known in advance, and they may appear and disappear at any time, as well as be obscured. For these reasons, the most popular and successful approaches have recently been based on the tracking paradigm. Therefore, the presence of a high quality object detector is essential, which in practice accounts for the vast majority of the computational and memory complexity of the whole MOT system. In this paper, we propose an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) implementation of an embedded MOT system based on a quantized YOLOv8 detector and the SORT (Simple Online Realtime Tracker) tracker. We use a modified version of the FINN framework to utilize external memory for model parameters and to support operations necessary required by YOLOv8. We discuss the evaluation of detection and tracking performance using the COCO and MOT15 datasets, where we achieve 0.21 mAP and 38.9 MOTA respectively. As the computational platform, we use an MPSoC system (Zynq UltraScale+ device from AMD/Xilinx) where the detector is deployed in reprogrammable logic and the tracking algorithm is implemented in the processor system. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
