In the transformative field of mineral processing, the need for innovative technologies to overcome inherent difficulties and a critical shortage of high-quality data is an acute challenge. This study addresses these pressing issues by leveraging advanced spatio-temporal deep learning techniques, specifically Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM). Focused on the Zinc flotation circuit at CMG Managem Group in Morocco, our comprehensive approach encompasses meticulous data collection from a real-world industrial setting, rigorous spatial and temporal analyses, practical and accurate data augmentation, and the development of a ConvLSTM model for precise prediction of mineral grades. By capturing the temporal intricacies of froth behavior through video data, we gain insights into mineral concentration fluctuations, a critical aspect of traditional analysis. By offering a comprehensive solution that combines cutting-edge technology, meticulous data analysis, and practical augmentation methods, we aim to elevate not only mineral processing efficiency but also a broader spectrum of resource utilization and sustainable practices. This study offers a promising solution to elevate mineral processing efficiency and accuracy in the face of data limitations. One-sided communication is one of many approaches to use for data transfer in High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications. One-sided operations require less demand on parallel programming libraries and do not require HPC hardware to issue acknowledgments of successful data transfer. Thanks to its inherently non-blocking nature, one-sided communication is also useful for improving overlap between communication and compute. As with any non-blocking communication, however, we run into the issue of message progression getting interleaved with computation. With the advent of Smart Network Cards (SmartNIC) such as NVIDIA’s BlueField Data Processing Units (DPU), we can offload the communication and message progression to these devices to improve the overlap of communication and compute. In this paper, we propose designs for efficient offloading of one-sided communication. We show how our designs can be used for offloading both MPI one-sided "put" and "get" and OpenSHMEM’s non-blocking "put" and "get". Using a Block Sparse Matrix-Multiplication Kernel (BSPMM), we show that our designs achieve over 96% improvement in runtime over pure-host execution for communication offload. We also briefly explore initial compute offload ideas for such one-sided kernels and show over 91% improvement in runtime here. © 2024 IEEE.

This study investigates the fabrication of innovative UV-blocking sheets that effectively transmit visible light while simultaneously obstructing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, utilizing Cerium Oxide (CeO2) and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as UV-blocking agents. Three distinct fabrication methods were explored: The Powder Method, where nanoparticles were incorporated directly into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS);the Ball milling Mixture method, which involved mixing nanoparticles through ball milling;and the Solvent-Based Mixture method, where nanoparticles were dissolved, mixed, and dried;before incorporation into PDMS. Samples were produced using a 3D printing technique, which is Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and characterized for their optical properties via UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated CeO2 demonstrated superior UV-blocking capabilities (a maximum blockage of ~99%) compared to ZnO, while maintaining high transmittance for visible light (a maximum of ~90%). Notably, the solvent-based method exhibited better results than the ball milling method;however, the powder method had the best results. Therefore, this investigation offers a promising solution for solar panel protection that aligns with Saudi Arabia's vision 2030 energy objectives. The relentless exposure of devices, particularly solar cells, to harmful UV radiation poses a formidable challenge and leads to annual degradation rates of between −0.8% and −4.9%, besides other factors. These findings underscore the critical importance of developing effective UV-blocking solutions. ©2024 IEEE.

The sixth-generation(6G) wireless network will support ubiquitous connectivity and diversified scenarios to satisfy the requirements of various emerging applications. Full spectrum is a key enabler for6G to achieve the ambitious goal of a Tbps-scale data rate. In this paper, we first review the scenario and potential spectrum plan for 6G and then focus on SpectrumChain, a blockchain-based dynamic spectrumsharing(DSS) framework for 6G. The unique characteristics of blockchain for DSS are presented along with key technologies. Finally, the conclusion and future development trends are discussed.

Counterfactual discriminative micro-expression recognition

Micro-expressions are spontaneous, rapid and subtle facial movements that can hardly be suppressed or fabricated. Micro-expression recognition (MER) is one of the most challenging topics in affective computing. It aims to recognize subtle facial movements which are quite difficult for humans to perceive in a fleeting period. Recently, many deep learning-based MER methods have been developed. However, how to effectively capture subtle temporal variations for robust MER still perplexes us. We propose a counterfactual discriminative micro-expression recognition (CoDER) method to effectively learn the slight temporal variations for video-based MER. To explicitly capture the causality from temporal dynamics hidden in the micro-expression (ME) sequence, we propose ME counterfactual reasoning by comparing the effects of the facts w.r.t. original ME sequences and the counterfactuals w.r.t. counterfactually-revised ME sequences, and then perform causality-aware prediction to encourage the model to learn those latent ME temporal cues. Extensive experiments on four widely-used ME databases demonstrate the effectiveness of CoDER, which results in comparable and superior MER performance compared with that of the state-of-the-art methods. The visualization results show that CoDER successfully perceives the meaningful temporal variations in sequential faces. © The Author(s) 2024.
