Microgrid (MG) networks, with their diverse energy sources and storage systems, represent complex higher-order systems (HOS). Analyzing such networks is challenging due to the uncertainty associated with energy sources like solar and wind power. To address this complexity, reduced-order models (ROMs) are essential, achieved through order reduction techniques. This article presents a method to reduce the eighth-order transfer function of an islanded microgrid to a second-order model. The reduction involves truncation reduction technique (TRT) for the numerator and Routh approximation reduction technique (RART) for the denominator. A comparative analysis is conducted between the original higher-order islanded microgrid system and its ROM. The comparison includes various error indices to determine the effectiveness of the ROM. Graphical representations of impulse, Nichols, step, Nyquist, and Bode responses are provided for both the original system and the ROM to visually compare their performances. This study demonstrates the practical application of mixed reduction techniques to simplify complex microgrid models, making them more manageable for analysis and design purposes.

Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors have garnered attention as promising solutions for high-power and high-frequency applications, attributed to their exceptional features such as high electron mobility, high breakdown voltage, and wide bandgap. However, the efficacy of GaN HEMTs is challenged by some restrictive phenomena, notably self-heating and thermal effects. This paper presents experimental results from DC analysis conducted on different GaN HEMT devices featuring various numbers of fingers, alongside an examination of the thermal impact on device performance. The correlation between finger count in multi-finger HEMTs and device performance is explored, followed by a discussion on mitigation strategies aimed at optimizing device design and structures to address these challenges.

The growing impact of distributed energy resources (DERs) on transmission operations has underscored the need for comprehensive modeling and simulation approaches in transient analysis. However, owing to their dispersed deployment, the DERs situated at varying locations "see" distinct grid conditions, potentially triggering individual protection and control responses during transmission-level contingencies. This requires modeling the DERs situated near fault locations with high fidelity, sometimes even individually, to accurately capture phenomena like voltage dips, while DERs beyond this boundary can be effectively aggregated. Consequently, there is a lack of investigation of the contingency-dependent DER behaviors in the literature. In this paper, we embark on the initial step in this direction, surpassing the conventional practice that typically aggregates a large number of DERs in distribution feeders using a single DER model at the point of common coupling. To that end, a hybrid EMT-phasor simulation platform for transmission-and-distribution systems is developed where the modified IEEE 39-bus system and the IEEE 33-node feeder with DERs represent the transmission and distribution systems, respectively. Then, the limitation of the commonly used single DER aggregated model for capturing the partial tripping of DERs and the need for an enhanced aggregation scheme is highlighted. Furthermore, the study proposes and demonstrates a preliminary contingency-dependent DER aggregation scheme utilizing hybrid time-domain simulation on the test system models. This pioneering endeavor leads to a promising trajectory for future research, which includes exploration into analytical and/or machine learning-based methodologies aimed at discerning the areas of interest where enhanced DER aggregation is needed.

Existing quantum computers can only operate with hundreds of qubits in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) state, while quantum distributed computing (QDC) is regarded as a reliable way to address this limitation, allowing quantum computers to achieve their full computational potential. However, similar to classical distributed computing, QDC also faces the problem of privacy leakage. Existing research has introduced quantum differential privacy (QDP) for privacy protection in central quantum computing, but there is no dedicated privacy protection mechanisms for QDC. To fill this research gap, our paper introduces a novel concept called quantum Rényi differential privacy (QRDP), which incorporates the advantages of classical Rényi DP and is applicable in the QDC domain. Based on the new quantum Rényi divergence, QRDP provides delicate and flexible privacy protection by introducing parameter α. In particular, the QRDP composition is well suited for QDC, since it allows for more precise control of the total privacy budget in scenarios requiring multiple quantum operations. We analyze a variety of noise mechanisms that can implement QRDP, and derive the lowest privacy budget provided by these mechanisms. Finally, we investigate the impact of different quantum parameters on QRDP. Through our simulations, we also find that adding noise will make the data less usable, but increase the level of privacy protection. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Secure Communication in Dynamic RDARS-Driven Systems

In this letter, we investigate a dynamic reconfigurable distributed antenna and reflection surface (RDARS)driven secure communication system, where the working mode of the RDARS can be flexibly configured. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly designing the active beamforming vectors, reflection coefficients, and the channel-aware mode selection matrix. To address the non-convex binary and cardinality constraints introduced by dynamic mode selection, we propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) framework that employs penalty-based fractional programming (FP) and successive convex approximation (SCA) transformations. Simulation results demonstrate the potential of RDARS in enhancing the secrecy rate and show its superiority compared to existing reflection surface-based schemes. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Photosensors with versatile functionalities have emerged as a cornerstone for breakthroughs in the future optoelectronic systems across a wide range of *** particular,emerging photoelectrochemical(PEC)-type devices have recently attracted extensive interest in liquid-based biosensing applications due to their natural electrolyte-assisted operating ***,a PEC-type photosensor was carefully designed and constructed by employing gallium nitride(GaN)p-n homojunction semiconductor nanowires on silicon,with the p-GaN segment strategically doped and then decorated with cobalt-nickel oxide(CoNiO_(x)).Essentially,the p-n homojunction configuration with facile p-doping engineering improves carrier separation efficiency and facilitates carrier transfer to the nanowire surface,while CoNiO_(x)decoration further boosts PEC reaction activity and carrier dynamics at the nanowire/electrolyte ***,the constructed photosensor achieves a high responsivity of 247.8 mA W^(-1)while simultaneously exhibiting excellent operating ***,based on the remarkable stability and high responsivity of the device,a glucose sensing system was established with a demonstration of glucose level determination in real human *** work offers a feasible and universal approach in the pursuit of high-performance bio-related sensing applications via a rational design of PEC devices in the form of nanostructured architecture with strategic doping engineering.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important non-invasive technique for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). After acquiring the patients' raw ECG signal data, signal processing is essential for the diagnosis. Conventional ECG signal processing is usually performed serially, which takes a long time to process signals with large amounts of data. In this study, we have proposed a GPGPU-based algorithm acceleration system to improve the efficiency of ECG signal processing. This system utilizes OpenCL for parallel algorithm development on GPGPU. GPGPU executes certain steps in the QRS complex detection algorithm via parallel computing, thereby accelerating the algorithmic process. Experimental results showed that the system achieved a speedup of 1.279 compared to serial computing when processing 39 ECG signal sequences in parallel. In addition, our system has been equipped with a progressive transmission mechanism and a function that intelligently determines whether an algorithm can be accelerated. These features make this system practical not only in biomedical signal processing but also in engineering and research fields with large amounts of data.

Locked entropy in partially coherent optical fields

We introduce a taxonomy for partially coherent optical fields spanning multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) based on the rank of the associated coherence matrix (the number of nonzero eigenvalues). When DOF comprise two spatial modes and polarization, a fourfold classification emerges, with rank-1 fields corresponding to fully coherent fields. We demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that these classes have different properties. Specifically, whereas rank-2 fields can always be rendered separable with respect to its DOF via a unitary transformation, rank-3 fields are always nonseparable. Consequently, the entropy for a rank-2 field can always be concentrated into a single DOF (thus ridding the other DOF of statistical fluctuations), whereas some entropy is always “locked” in one DOF of a rank-3 field. These results offer insight into the dynamics of optical coherence upon traversing systems or media that couple DOF.

ODD: Omni Differential Drive for Simultaneous Reconfiguration and Omnidirectional Mobility of Wheeled Robots

Wheeled robots are highly efficient in human living environments. However, conventional wheeled designs, limited by degrees of freedom, struggle to meet varying footprint needs and achieve omnidirectional mobility. This paper proposes a novel robot drive model inspired by human movements, termed as the Omni Differential Drive (ODD). The ODD model innovatively utilizes a lateral differential drive to adjust wheel spacing without adding additional actuators to the existing omnidirectional drive. This approach enables wheeled robots to achieve both simultaneous reconfiguration and omnidirectional mobility. Additionally, a prototype was developed to validate the ODD, followed by kinematic analysis. Control systems for self-balancing and motion were designed and implemented. Experimental validations confirmed the feasibility of the ODD mechanism and the effectiveness of the control strategies. The results underline the potential of this innovative drive system to enhance the mobility and adaptability of robotic platforms. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
