This paper presents a communication network model used to study the impact of the communication layer on smart grid protection schemes. Communication failure due to hardware malfunction or cyber-attack could lead to major impacts on the smart grid. Some critical devices require real-time data or close to real-time to make the right decision at the right time and keep the system in a stable zone, such as a protection relay. Active man in the middle attack adds additional latency to the packet delivery. A false data injection attack could drive the system to an unstable point, eventually leading to a blackout. This paper designed and implemented communication emulation model for a local area network on the FIU smart grid testbed. Two cases were tested in the developed communication model. In the first case, two physical raspberry pi boards were used to represent two nodes in the smart grid and one traffic generated within the virtual network. In the second case, five ABB Protection Relays and COM600 substation automation devices were connected to GNS3. The two cases showed that GNS3 could be used to emulate the communications network and study the impact of the network performance on the real-world substation environment.

Pest detection is critical for achieving effective pest control. However, the current deep learning-based pest detection algorithm is unsuitable for deployment on resource-limited edge devices due to its extensive computation and long inference time. Although lightweight models have been widely used for practical detection, their insufficient feature extraction capability leads to a decline in detection accuracy. This paper proposes a fast algorithm for crop pest detection based on lightweight feature extraction and knowledge distillation. Firstly, we introduce partial convolution and propose a lightweight feature extraction module, C3Faster, which reduces the model's computation and speeds up model inference while ensuring effective feature extraction. Secondly, we use knowledge distillation to improve the model's detection accuracy by using teacher networks to assist in training. Finally, we created a dataset, CropPest6, consisting of six crop pest categories and conducted experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that our method reduces the detection time, number of parameters, and computation by 17%, 38%, and 44%, respectively, compared to the baseline model. Furthermore, our method achieves 93.9% Precision, 93.6% Recall, and 97.5% mean Average Precision (mAP), demonstrating its practical suitability for fast crop pest detection.

HPC systems encompass more components with each new generation. As a result, the process of interacting with stable storage systems like parallel file systems (PFS) becomes increasingly difficult. Larger systems often result in more frequent failures, increasing the need and frequency to incorporate fault-tolerant mechanisms. One example is checkpoint-restart (C/R), where applications or systems save their data to non-volatile storage devices, such as a PFS. On failure, the system or application is restored to a saved state and computation continues. Today, asynchronous C/R is gaining traction for its ability to checkpoint data to permanent storage concurrently with the application. However, asynchronous C/R brings about many new challenges. For starters, asynchronous C/R introduces complex resource contention between the application and the C/R implementation. Additionally, some implementations adopt file-per-process writing strategies, which overwhelm PFS’ at high core counts. In this work, we explore how multi-threaded POSIX I/O impacts aggregated throughput. To this extent we characterize the influence of different I/O parameters, such as the number of writer threads and how they access storage devices, has on aggregated I/O. We use the information gathered in this study to identify best practices when performing aggregated I/O as a first step in designing an efficient I/O aggregation scheme for asynchronous C/R.

The advancement of satellite technologies in future space missions is limited by the antiquated power architectures with low efficiencies and small power densities. The power converter architecture proposed in this work was designed as part of the Breakthrough Distributed Power Architecture (BDPA) program for the NASA Jet Propulsion laboratory that takes advantage of modern, highly efficient resonant isolated topologies like the LLC with switching strategies like zero voltage switching (ZVS) while using all space rated components. This work presents a 200 W, 1 MHz switching frequency, cascaded Buck-LLC resonant converter that is oriented for radiation hardened (rad-hard) space applications and achieves high efficiency by taking advantage of Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices. The converter achieves a peak efficiency of 91 %, a 10 % improvement over other currently available converters in its power and voltage range while maintaining a 100krad, 75MeV-cm 2 /mg radiation hardness.

This paper firstly discusses the current research status and problems of the energy supply system for island scenes. In response to these problems, this paper proposes an integrated layout scheme for the construction of a multi-energy reef power plant based on paddle-less wind turbines, floating solar panels, and oscillating float-type wave energy capture devices, taking into account the island's natural conditions and geographic advantages, based on a full assessment of the wind/light/wave energy resource conditions of the island and its neighboring reef area scenarios. With the constraint of equal annual value investment cost, a reasonable layout optimization principle is established based on the actual conditions, and a typical day is selected using the scenario reduction idea to establish a layout optimization and capacity exploration model with the objective function of maximizing the annual total power generation. The CPLEX mixed integer planning algorithm is used to solve the modeling examples, and the results are compared with those of the exhaustive method with different accuracies. The results show that the proposed construction layout scheme is reasonable and feasible, and has unique advantages in the island scenario, with a large potential for power generation. © 2024, The Authors. In recent years, as people’s living standards have improved and consumption concepts have been transformed, the demand for purchasing consumer electronics online has continued to grow, further stimulating the development of the logistics industry. Consequently, how to deliver consumer electronics to households at minimal cost has become a crucial factor that limits the development of the consumer technology industry. To tackle this problem, this paper studies the task assignment problem for multiple initially dispersed UAVs to deliver products to target locations while minimizing their total operation time. Each UAV can continuously provide delivery services to multiple target locations within its limited loading capacity and operation time. To solve this problem, we propose several hybrid multipopulation genetic algorithms. First, a novel crossover operator for the genetic algorithms is designed, through which a single parent chromosome can generate offspring individually. Second, two mutation mechanisms are performed to increase gene diversity. Third, multiple local search strategies are employed to enhance the populations’ fitness during each iteration of evolution. An improved 2-opt local search strategy is applied to optimize individual chromosomes when their similarity with the current best chromosome falls below a prescribed threshold. Alternatively, local search strategies are utilized for 1-opt, 2h-opt and interchange processes. Combining local search strategies, genetic operators, and the multi-population mechanism leads to several hybrid multi-population genetic algorithms. Numerical simulations and experimental tests demonstrate that the hybrid multi-population genetic algorithm, integrated with the improved 2-opt and 1-opt local search strategies, exhibits superior performance among the designed hybrid genetic algorithms, the minimum marginal cost algorithm (MMA), and the existing popular Co-evolutionary Multi-population Genetic Algorithm (CMGA). Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is of significance in the field of marine monitoring. SAR collects reflection imaging of marine ship targets to radar beams and records a variety of information such as radiation phase, vibration frequency, and reflection intensity of the target area. Due to the complex sea surface environment, traditional vision methods cannot effectively identify weak ship targets. Deep learning methods, especially two-stage detectors, e.g. Oriented Region Convolution Neural Network (R-CNN) have given solutions to address such challenges, which have shown certain advantages when facing the problem of complex ocean scenes and weak ship targets. However, the presence of a large amount of coherent noise and speckle noise in SAR images makes the two-stage deep learning model approach still deficient in SAR image processing tasks, which leads to the degradation of typical model detection accuracy. In this paper, an enhanced Oriented R-CNN detector, namely ORS-Net, is proposed to balance between high efficiency and high performance, by augmenting both the backbone network and feature fusion network, and employing various optimization strategies in the training and inference stages. To improve the model’s ability to extract feature information from SAR image ship targets, two backbone feature extraction network structures are optimized and improved. One is Dilated ResNet improved based on dilated convolution, and the other is Deep Swin-Transformer based on unstructured model tuning. In addition, the FPN structure is extended by embedding dilated convolution modules in the feature fusion network to ensure efficient feature fusion. Finally, the model is optimized in various aspects during the training and inference phases to further improve its performance. It is experimentally demonstrated that ORS-NET achieves 53.79 mAP, which is better than the current mainstream general-purpose rotating object detectors. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is an appealing technique for confirming the welding quality and ensuring structural integrity without causing damage. It assists in regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and process optimization for improved industrial reliability. This study reviews potential NDT approaches. Through a rigorous analysis of existing surveys, we aim to decipher the current landscape and highlight the significant advancements in the field. Because of the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) assistive X-ray imaging-based NDT, we particularly examine the integration of AI algorithms and X-ray imaging in the NDT of welds. This convergence represents a paradigm shift, redefining traditional methods and ushering in a new era of precision, automation, and efficiency. As we navigate through potential X-ray imaging datasets, delve into crucial image processing techniques, examine feature extraction methods, and explore AI algorithms, our survey reveals the intricate interplay of technologies that drive automated weld defect categorization. The review broadens its focus by including various practical applications, highlighting the adaptable utility of AI-assistive X-ray imaging for weld defect detection in potential industrial applications. Moreover, the promising opportunities and nuanced challenges associated with integrating X-ray imaging and AI in weld integrity assessment are highlighted. The disturbance response of the angle dynamics for a droop-controlled islanded microgrid is characterized. Specifically, a notion of propagation stability is defined, which is concerned with spatial attenuation vs amplification of input-output responses in the network in a ℋ ∞ or ℋ 2 sense. Criteria for propagation stability are developed, phrased in terms of the microgrid’s inverter control parameters. The input frequency range over which the network is susceptible to amplification is also characterized, in the case that the criteria are not met. Based on the formal analysis, the design of resilient controls that trade off coherence and disturbance propagation goals is briefly conceptualized. Finally, the propagation stability analysis is illustrated using a 15-bus example microgrid network.
