This paper investigates the aging of the HTV silicone rubber with ATH filler housing of brand new and naturally field-aged medium voltage composite insulators. Three different tests were performed for the purpose of this investigation. Visual inspection, as well as hydrophobicity, according to the spray method of IEC 62073, and density measurements, according to method B of ISO 2781, were conducted. The composite insulators used for this research work were two new (unused) and six naturally aged line-post and suspension composite insulators, made by four different manufacturers. The results showed that visual inspection, in combination with measurement of hydrophobicity, can be a good indicator for the aging of composite insulators. In addition, it was concluded that density of the housing material does not seem to depend on the aging of the insulators, as well as on the part of the insulators from which the test piece is extracted. Finally, density can give a first indication about which material is used as housing for composite insulators. © 2021 The Institution of engineering and Technology.

At high energy accelerator facilities, it is important to control radiation exposure to ensure the safety of the staff and public. In this paper, we optimized various Transformer-based deep learning models to efficiently estimate radiation exposure at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). We explored the effects of utilizing various model embedding types and training with either channel dependence or independence. The models were trained and optimized on radiation, energy, current, and beam loss accounting data collected from sensors at JLab. Our results demonstrated that the Transformer-based model utilizing temporal embedding and channel dependence achieved the best performance with an average R 2 score of 0.771. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first attempt to explore transformer deep learning models for radiation estimation at JLab and showed potential to further improve radiation estimation performance.

Three-dimensional magnetic recording (3DMR) is a highly promising approach to achieving ultra-large data storage capacity in hard disk drives. One of the greatest challenges for 3DMR lies in performing sequential and correct writing of bits into the multi-layer recording medium. In this work, we have proposed a hierarchical recording architecture based on layered heat-assisted writing with a multi-head array. The feasibility of the architecture is validated in a dual-layer 3DMR system with FePt-based thin films via micromagnetic simulation. Our results reveal the magnetization reversal mechanism of the grains, ultimately attaining appreciable switching probability and medium signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each layer. In particular, an optimal head-to-head distance is identified as the one that maximizes the medium SNR. Optimizing the system’s noise resistance will improve the overall SNR and allow for a smaller optimal head-to-head distance, which can pave the way for scaling 3DMR to more recording layers. As a kind of grid-forming control method that can effectively provide virtual inertia for the power grid, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control has received increasing attention in recent years. However, the VSG control will extract energy from the DC side during a grid frequency drop, which brings a burden on the stability of the DC side of a VSG. To address this problem, this paper establishes a fully analytical small-signal model of the VSG DC terminal impedance, incorporating both the inertia mechanism and the DC side dynamics. The accuracy of the model is validated through comparison with the sweep frequency results of the simulation. Finally, the Nyquist criterion is employed to analyze the DC stability of the VSG, and the simulation results match well with the theoretical predictions.

Effective control of traffic signals plays a critical role in ensuring smooth vehicle flow in urban areas. Expertly engineered traffic signal controllers can considerably minimize travel delays and enhance sustainability. In this paper, the team proposes the Model Predictive Control (MPC) traffic signal control strategy using real-time traffic flow data from a vision-based camera as feedback information. Also, a realistic signal timing plan that considers National electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) constraints has been developed to be applied to real-world scenarios. The primary aim is to reduce the number of vehicles across all links in the controlled area, thereby optimizing traffic flow and reducing energy consumption. To validate the proposed method, several real-life experiments were conducted at 24 intersections in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by collaborating with traffic field engineers. These experiments demonstrated significant performance improvements in comparison to the existing method.

The use of deep learning in the field of wireless communications has already shown great potential. In this work we present a deep feedforward and a deep recurrent neural network trained as null steering beamformers that target high sidelobes in order to establish low sidelobe level for any desired incoming signal. Using of a zero-forcing algorithm, we apply a sidelobe-damping algorithm where iteratively, a constant number of sidelobes is nullified until a desired sidelobe level is reached. In this way, we can create a dataset which we later use to train our NN models. Using Bayesian optimization, we perform hyperparameter tuning to configure structure and training related parameters for the NNs under examination. The NN models are later fine-tuned using a small dataset containing more demanding cases. © VDE VERLAG GMBH - Berlin - Offenbach.

This paper considers the problem of distributed beam scheduling in millimeter-Wave (mmWave) cellular networks with non-cooperating service operators sharing the spectrum. The base stations (BSs) may belong to different operators so there is no coordination or centralized control among them. Our goal is to design efficient distributed beam scheduling schemes to optimize the network-level utility defined as the sum of the logarithm of the average throughput of the users. Utilizing the Lyapunov optimization theory, the network utility optimization problem can be cast into two sub-problems to be solved iteratively in each frame. The second sub-problem is non-convex and challenging to solve in general. To this end, we propose a non-cooperative game-based beam scheduling and power allocation scheme in which the BSs are modeled as players that aim to optimize their individual payoff. The Nash Equilibrium (NE) then provides a distributed (approximate) solution to the second sub-problem. We prove the existence of NE and identify sufficient conditions guaranteeing the uniqueness of NE by establishing an equivalence of the formulated game to a variational inequality problem. A parallel power update algorithm is proposed with assured convergence. Numerical evaluation demonstrates the superiority of the proposed approach over several baselines. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel compliant mechanism combining lightweight and energy dissipation for aerial physical interaction. Weighting 400 g at take-off, the mechanism is actuated in the forward body direction, enabling precise position control for force interaction and various other aerial manipulation tasks. The robotic arm, structured as a closed-loop kinematic chain, employs two deported servomotors. Each joint is actuated with a single tendon for active motion control in compression of the arm at the end-effector. Its elasto-mechanical design reduces weight and provides flexibility, allowing passive-compliant interactions without impacting the motors' integrity. Notably, the arm's damping can be adjusted based on the proposed inner frictional bulges. Experimental applications showcase the aerial system performance in both free-flight and physical interaction. The presented work may open safer applications for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) in real environments subject to perturbations during interaction.

The multi-agent task allocation can be solved in a distributed manner using Consensus-Based Bundle Algorithm (CBBA). Under this distributed auction process, each agent greedily maximizes the global score, which is the difference of the reward and the cost, through an iterative bundle construction and conflict resolution procedure. The distributed algorithm has provable convergence and guarantees 50% optimality if the score function satisfies the condition of diminishing marginal gain (DMG). While the previous work focuses on unconstrained optimization of rewards, this paper aims at applying CBBA to task allocation with budget constraints. Several heuristics were proposed to build the bundle and calculate the bidding scores as improvements to the original CBBA algorithm. We then prove that some of the new score functions are DMG, and therefore guarantees the convergence of the distributed process. We also show that these heuristic extended CBBAs are Pareto efficient;using different heuristic extensions under different scenarios is more efficient than consistently using the same one. To decide which heuristic extension should be used for a given task allocation problem, a graph convolutional neural network (GCN) model is trained to extract and analyze the features of the constrained optimization problem as a graph, and predict the potential performance (i.e., global reward) of different heuristic extensions. Based on the prediction, the best heuristic extension will be selected. Experimental results show that the predicted reward has more than 0.98 correlation with the actual reward and for 70% of time the prediction guided selection picks the best heuristic extension for the budget constrained task allocation problem. © 2021 IEEE.
