Emerging Technologies in Intelligent Metasurfaces: Shaping the Future of Wireless Communications

Intelligent metasurfaces have demonstrated great promise in revolutionizing wireless communications. One notable example is the two-dimensional (2D) programmable metasurface, which is also known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to manipulate the wireless propagation environment to enhance network coverage. More recently, three-dimensional (3D) stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) have been developed to substantially improve signal processing efficiency by directly processing analog electromagnetic signals in the wave domain. Another exciting breakthrough is the flexible intelligent metasurface (FIM), which possesses the ability to morph its 3D surface shape in response to dynamic wireless channels and thus achieve diversity gain. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of these emerging intelligent metasurface technologies. We commence by examining recent experiments of RIS and exploring its applications from four perspectives. Furthermore, we delve into the fundamental principles underlying SIM, discussing relevant prototypes as well as their applications. Numerical results are also provided to illustrate the potential of SIM for analog signal processing. Finally, we review the state-of-the-art of FIM technology, discussing its impact on wireless communications and identifying the key challenges of integrating FIMs into wireless networks. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

In this work, a liquid-based reconfigurable beam steerable antenna is presented. The proposed antenna is a Fabry-Pérot cavity antenna (FPCA) wherein the metasurface forming the cavity has four-quadrant 3D-printed liquid chambers. The chambers are sandwiched between two 16×16 conductive cross grid and square patch resonant element array layers making the metasurface. The source antenna is a planar coaxial-fed patch antenna radiating at 10 GHz. The proposed metasurface along with the source antenna forms a FPCA having a gain of 7 dBi. Beam steering is achieved and controlled by filling water chambers in different combinations. Beam steering of ±30° is achieved in two orthogonal planes i.e., xz-plane and yz-plane.

Low-rank structures have been observed in several recent empirical studies in many machine and deep learning problems, where the loss function demonstrates significant variation only in a lower dimensional subspace. While traditional gradient-based optimization algorithms are computationally costly for high-dimensional parameter spaces, such low-rank structures provide an opportunity to mitigate this cost. In this paper, we aim to leverage low-rank structures to alleviate the computational cost of first-order methods and study Adaptive Low-Rank Gradient Descent (AdaLRGD). The main idea of this method is to begin the optimization procedure in a very small subspace and gradually and adaptively augment it by including more directions. We show that for smooth and strongly convex objectives and any target accuracy $\epsilon$ , AdaLRGD's complexity is $\mathcal{O}(r\ln(r/\epsilon))$ for some rank $r$ no more than dimension $d$ . This significantly improves upon gradient descent's complexity of $\mathcal{O}(d\ln(1/\epsilon))$ when $r\ll d$ . We also propose a practical implementation of AdaLRGD and demonstrate its ability to leverage existing low-rank structures in data.

The core of recommendation models is estimating the probability that a user will like an item based on historical interactions. Existing collaborative filtering(CF) algorithms compute the likelihood by utilizing simple relationships between objects, e.g., user-item, item-item, or user-user. They always rely on a single type of object-object relationship, ignoring other useful relationship information in data. In this paper, we model an interaction between user and item as an edge and propose a novel CF framework, called learnable edge collaborative filtering(LECF). LECF predicts the existence probability of an edge based on the connections among edges and is able to capture the complex relationship in data. Specifically, we first adopt the concept of line graph where each node represents an interaction edge; then calculate a weighted sum of similarity between the query edge and the observed edges(i.e., historical interactions) that are selected from the neighborhood of query edge in the line graph for a recommendation. In addition, we design an efficient propagation algorithm to speed up the training and inference of LECF. Extensive experiments on four public datasets demonstrate LECF can achieve better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, the leaderless consensus control problem for general linear multi-agent systems with completely unknown dynamics is investigated. Different from the existing results, both event-triggered communication and controller updates are considered under a directed graph condition. The primary challenges addressed in this paper are twofold: the completely unknown system dynamics for each agent and the inherent asymmetry of the Laplacian matrix that characterizes the communication topology. To tackle these challenges, the hybrid iteration reinforcement learning algorithm is utilized to derive the unique solution to the algebraic Riccati equation (ARE). Furthermore, the distributed consensus control schemes and the triggering conditions are proposed without using the precise knowledge of the system dynamics of all the agents. It can be proved that all the closed-loop signals are globally uniformly bounded. Besides, the practical leaderless consensus can be reached with discretized communication and controller updates, effectively avoiding Zeno behavior in all the agents. Finally, we present illustrative simulation results which underscore the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

In the framework of impedance control, the torque trajectory of the joint is unpredictable due to nonlinear factors during the movement of the exoskeleton. To precisely predict command torque trajectory and compensate for the disturbances, we propose a dual-loop joint torque control system including predictive feedforward and a disturbance observer. A predictive feedforward module is adopted as the control outer loop based on the feedback control, and a general compensation module is used to compensate for the prediction error. The inner loop adopts a disturbance observer to estimate and compensate for low-frequency external disturbances. The simulation, which utilizes the actual torque of hip and knee joints as a reference, is conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. The comparison results demonstrate that the proposed control method can realize high bandwidth for exoskeleton joint control. © 2023 IEEE.

On Shaping Gain of Multidimensional Constellation in Linear and Nonlinear Optical Fiber Channel

Utilizing the multi-dimensional (MD) space for constellation shaping has been proven to be an effective approach for achieving shaping gains. Despite there exists a variety of MD modulation formats tailored for specific optical transmission scenarios, there remains a notable absence of a dependable comparison method for efficiently and promptly re-evaluating their performance in arbitrary transmission systems. In this paper, we introduce an analytical nonlinear interference (NLI) power model-based shaping gain estimation method to enable a fast performance evaluation of various MD modulation formats in coherent dual-polarization (DP) optical transmission system. In order to extend the applicability of this method to a broader set of modulation formats, we extend the established NLI model to take the 4D joint distribution into account and thus able to analyze the complex interactions of non-iid signaling in DP systems. With the help of the NLI model, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-the-art modulation formats and investigate their actual shaping gains in two types of optical fiber communication scenarios (multi-span and single-span). The numerical simulation shows that for arbitrary modulation formats, the NLI power and relative shaping gains in terms of signal-to-noise ratio can be more accurately estimated by capturing the statistics of MD symbols. Furthermore, the proposed method further validates the effectiveness of the reported NLI-tolerant modulation format in the literature, which reveals that the linear shaping gains and modulation-dependent NLI should be jointly considered for nonlinearity mitigation. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this study, a novel fault-tolerant broad fuzzy learning control scheme is proposed for a flexible single-link manipulator with input delay and output constraints. The broad fuzzy neural network is utilized to effectively approximate the time delay of the controller and compensate for the unknown nonlinear uncertainties. By applying the Lyapunov direct method and barrier Lyapunov function, the semi-global uniformly ultimately boundedness (SGUUB) of the system is demonstrated, which guarantees that all system states converge to zero within the specified limitation. Finally, the simulation and experiment results, compared with those of different neural networks, manifest the validity of the proposed control method. © 2025 IEEE.
