LucIE: Language-guided local image editing for fashion images

Corrosion poses a significant challenge in industries due to material degradation and high maintenance costs, making effective inhibitors essential. Recent studies suggest expired pharmaceuticals as alternative corrosion inhibitors, but identifying the most efficient compounds can be time-consuming. This study applies machine learning models, particularly Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR), to predict corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE). The developed model is integrated into a web-based application, enabling real-time, accurate CIE predictions. Results show GBR as the more precise model for predicting CIE, with low error rates. The streamlit-based web application offers a user-friendly platform, facilitating quick identification of suitable inhibitors. It is flexible, supporting analysis beyond corrosion inhibitors, and significantly enhances the efficiency of the evaluation process. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) cost optimization in the nuclear energy industry is an imperative task for developing sustainable systems and efficient renewable technologies. We present a modular probabilistic framework for addressing maintenance scheduling challenges for small modular nuclear reactors using a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) approach that monitors fatigue and performance in multiple subsystems of the reactors and provides a probabilistic assessment for potential failure events. The DBN framework fuses information from potential digital twins that assimilate real time data from several sensors with different time granularities in order to monitor and update thecurrentstate of knowledge aboutthestatus of several fatigue or performance criteria. Comprised of multi-modal digital twins (empirical, data- and physics-based twins), this DBN serves as a predictive framework forecasting the future state of specific reactor subsystems and enhancing decision-making capabilities associated with preventing system failure and minimizing the time and cost of maintenance events. The work presented in this paper is a holistic approach for monitoring and safeguarding complex, multi-component engineering systems where maintenance scheduling is critical and does not restrict itself to nuclear environments. Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most prevalent type of cardiac arrhythmia for which treatment may require patients to undergo ablation therapy. In this surgery cardiac tissues are locally scarred on purpose to prevent electrical signals from causing arrhythmia. Patient-specific cardiac digital twin models show great potential for personalized ablation therapy, however, they demand accurate semantic segmentation of healthy and scarred tissue typically obtained from late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) magnetic resonance (MR) scans. In this work we propose the Left Atrial Cascading Refinement CNN (LA-CaRe-CNN), which aims to accurately segment the left atrium as well as left atrial scar tissue from LGE MR scans. LA-CaRe-CNN is a 2-stage CNN cascade that is trained end-to-end in 3D, where Stage 1 generates a prediction for the left atrium, which is then refined in Stage 2 in conjunction with the original image information to obtain a prediction for the left atrial scar tissue. To account for domain shift towards domains unknown during training, we employ strong intensity and spatial augmentation to increase the diversity of the training dataset. Our proposed method based on a 5-fold ensemble achieves great segmentation results, namely, 89.21% DSC and 1.6969 mm ASSD for the left atrium, as well as 64.59% DSC and 91.80% G-DSC for the more challenging left atrial scar tissue. Thus, segmentations obtained through LA-CaRe-CNN show great potential for the generation of patient-specific cardiac digital twin models and downstream tasks like personalized targeted ablation therapy to treat AF. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

As the leading cause of death worldwide, cardiovascular diseases motivate the development of more sophisticated methods to analyze the heart and its substructures from medical images like Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR). Semantic segmentations of important cardiac structures that represent the whole heart are useful to assess patient-specific cardiac morphology and pathology. Furthermore, accurate semantic segmentations can be used to generate cardiac digital twin models which allows e.g. electrophysiological simulation and personalized therapy planning. Even though deep learning-based methods for medical image segmentation achieved great advancements over the last decade, retaining good performance under domain shift - i.e. when training and test data are sampled from different data distributions - remains challenging. In order to perform well on domains known at training-time, we employ a (1) balanced joint training approach that utilizes CT and MR data in equal amounts from different source domains. Further, aiming to alleviate domain shift towards domains only encountered at test-time, we rely on (2) strong intensity and spatial augmentation techniques to greatly diversify the available training data. Our proposed whole heart segmentation method, a 5-fold ensemble with our contributions, achieves the best performance for MR data overall and a performance similar to the best performance for CT data when compared to a model trained solely on CT. With 93.33% DSC and 0.8388 mm ASSD for CT and 89.30% DSC and 1.2411 mm ASSD for MR data, our method demonstrates great potential to efficiently obtain accurate semantic segmentations from which patient-specific cardiac twin models can be generated. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

With the increasing significance of research, Technology, and Innovation (RTI) policies in recent years, the demand for detailed information about the performance of these sectors has surged. Many of the current tools are limited in their application purpose. To address these issues, we introduce a requirements engineering process to identify stakeholders and elicitate requirements to derive a system architecture, for a web-based interactive and open-access RTI system monitoring tool. Based on several core modules, we introduce a multi-tier software architecture of how such a tool is generally implemented from the perspective of software engineers. A cornerstone of this architecture is the user-facing dashboard module. We describe in detail the requirements for this module and additionally illustrate these requirements with the real example of the Austrian RTI Monitor. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

For safety critical applications, it is still a challenge to use AI and fulfill all regulatory requirements. Medicine/healthcare and transportation are two fields where regulatory requirements are of fundamental importance. A wrong decision can lead to serious hazards or even deaths. In these fields, semantic segmentation is often utilized to extract features. Especially U-Net architectures are used. This paper shows how to apply layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) to a trained U-Net architecture. We achieve an efficient explanation of a segmentation by back-propagating the whole resulting image. To tackle the non-linear results of the LRP, we introduce a threshold mechanism in combination with a logarithmic transfer function to preprocess the data for visualization. We demonstrate our method on three use cases: the segmentation of a fiber-reinforced polymer in the field of non-destructive testing, the segmentation of pedestrians in an automotive application, and a lung segmentation example from the medical domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This study explores the feasibility of deep learning for classifying nodule neoplasms, analyzing their performance on two openly available datasets, LUNGx SPIE, and LIDC-IDRI. These datasets offer valuable diversity in image quantity, quality, and malignancy annotation methodologies, posing a real-world challenge for effective model development. To handle the disparities in these diverse datasets, we aim to develop a robust classification model trained using federated learning. This decentralized approach allows model training across datasets without sharing patient data, preserving privacy and overcoming data fragmentation. Our experiments demonstrate that federated learning enables the development of a robust and superior deep learning model compared to individual models trained on limited data. This combination of deep learning, and federated learning holds immense promise for nodule neoplasm classification and can significantly improve patient care and outcomes. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Language acquisition is an integral part of early schooling, but young English language learners struggle to learn vocabulary and syntax since they are not provided with specialized instruction. Conventional teaching may vary according to different learning speeds and it leads to unbalanced levels of proficiency among students and possibly leading to disengagement among slow learners. The present computer-assisted learning aids provide practice interactively but without real-time adaptation and personalized feedback, limiting their capacity to address learners’ unique problems. To overcome these constraints, this study suggests an Artificial Intelligence based personalized learning system that supports vocabulary and syntax learning via adaptive learning models, NLP-based chatbots and gamified interactive lessons. The system dynamically adapts content according to students’ most recent performance in real time to enable a personalized learning experience, which results in efficient Learning. The research has experimental study design, and two groups are considered, an AI-supported learning group and a traditional learning group. Pre-test and post-test design measures the effects of the system on vocabulary recall and syntax correctness. Other learner engagement rates like survey results and qualitative feedback inform learner experience and learning efficacy. Initial results indicate that learners working with the Artificial Intelligence powered learning system gained 25percent in recalling vocabulary and 30percent in syntax accuracy over the control group. Further, learner engagement rates are elevated because of real-time feedback and gamification components. These results emphasize the promise of AI-based personalized learning to boost language acquisition and lay the basis for further effective innovations in adaptive education technologies. © (2025), (Science and Information Organization). BACKGROUND:Although 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing has become an indispensable method for microbiome studies, this analysis is not error-free, and remains prone to several biases and errors. Numerous algorithms have been developed to eliminate these errors and consolidate the output into distance-based Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) or denoising-based Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs). An objective comparison between them has been obscured by various experimental setups and parameters. In the present study, we conducted a comprehensive benchmarking analysis of the error rates, microbial composition, over-merging/over-splitting of reference sequences, and diversity analyses using the most complex mock community, comprising 227 bacterial strains and the Mockrobiota database. Using unified preprocessing steps, we were able to compare DADA2, Deblur, MED, UNOISE3, UPARSE, DGC (Distance-based Greedy Clustering), AN (Average Neighborhood), and Opticlust objectively. RESULTS:ASV algorithms-led by DADA2- resulted in having a consistent output, yet suffered from over-splitting, while OTU algorithms-led by UPARSE-achieved clusters with lower errors, yet with more over-merging. Notably, UPARSE and DADA2 showed the closest resemblance to the intended microbial community, especially when considering measures for alpha and beta diversity. CONCLUSION:Our unbiased comparative evaluation examined the performance of eight algorithms dedicated to the analysis of 16S rRNA amplicon sequences with a wide range of mock datasets. Our analysis shed light on the pros and cons of each algorithm and the accuracy of the produced OTUs or ASVs. The utilization of the most complex mock community and the benchmarking comparison presented here offer a framework for the comparison between OTU/ASV algorithms and an objective method for the assessment of new tools and algorithms.
