This paper deals with the development of novel sensory systems and interfaces to enhance the safety of a driver who may be using a cell phone. It describes a system for real time affect analysis and Tele-viewing in order to bring the context of the driver to remote users. The system is divided into two modules. The affect recognition module recognizes six emotional states of the driver. The face-modeling module generates a 3D model of the driver's face using two images and synthesizes the emotions on it. Depending on bandwidth, either a raw video, 3D warped model, or an iconic representation is sent to the remote user.

In this paper, we present a fast algorithm for automatically generating a 3D model of a human face and synthesizing affects on it. This work is a step towards low bandwidth virtual tele-presence using avatars. The idea is to generate a 3D model of a person's face and animate different emotions on the face at a remote observer's end, thus eliminating the need to send raw video. This research is part of a larger project, which deals with development of novel sensory systems and interfaces to enhance safety of a driver. The proposed algorithm uses a stereo pair of images of a driver's face and creates a 3D mesh model by deforming and texture mapping a predefined 3D mesh.

From 1990 to April 2002, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), airbag deployment has been responsible for 208 deaths in low-severity crashes. Of these deaths, 107 were children between the ages of 1 and 11, 22 were infants, and 32 were women under the height of five feet two inches. In addition to deaths, airbags are responsible for many more incidental injuries and broken bones. These injuries could be avoided if the system had an accurate model of the actual pose of the occupant. Our research is focused on the development of novel machine vision based telematic systems, which provide non-intrusive probing of the state of the driver and driving conditions. In this paper we present a system which allows simultaneous capture of the driver's head pose, driving view, and surroundings of the vehicle. The integrated machine vision system utilizes a video stream of full 360 degree panoramic field of view. The processing modules include perspective transformation, feature extraction, head detection, head pose estimation, driving view synthesis, and motion segmentation. The paper presents a multi-state statistical decision models with Kalman filtering based tracking for head pose detection and face orientation estimation. The basic feasibility and robustness of the approach is demonstrated with a series of systematic experimental studies.

In this paper, a new non-parametric generalized formulation to statistical pressure snakes is presented. We discuss the shortcomings of the traditional pressure snakes. We then introduce a new generic pressure model that alleviates these shortcomings, based on the Bayesian decision theory. Non-parametric techniques are used to obtain the statistical models that drive the snake. We discuss the advantages of using the proposed non-parametric model compared to other parametric techniques. Multi-colored-target tracking is used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach. Experimental results show enhanced, real-time performance.

In this research it is claimed that engineering education increases the positivistic tendencies of students regarding to the social problems. A theoretical background is given in the introduction and literature review. Two hypotheses are constructed and a micro-questionnaire survey is performed to test the hypotheses. In the survey positivistic tendencies of engineering students and social science students are compared. The results are depicted and discussed in detail. One of the hypotheses was approved by the results while the other was rejected. It is concluded that the rejected hypothesis was not in accordance with the claim since it overlooked some factors effecting positivism. The results of the survey support the claim by stating that ’engineering students are more positivist than social science students’.

Giving the ability to read characters and symbols is highly desirable for increased autonomy of mobile robots operating in the real world. The idea is fairly simple: give a robot the ability to acquire an image of a message to read, extract the symbols and recognize them. Image character recognition research has been going on for decades now, with good results. But compared to conventional character recognition systems, the challenge with a mobile robot is to find a textual message to capture in the world and to get a good view of the message, knowing that the viewpoint of the robot depends on its position in relation to the message, which cannot be pre-specified. In this paper we present our approach making it possible for an autonomous mobile robot to read messages. We outline the constraints under which the approach works, and present results obtained using a Pioneer 2 robot equipped with a Pentium 233 MHz and a pan-tilt-zoom camera.

A pattern and interferometric probe method is described for measuring aberrations in the human eye. Both subjective (human reporting) and objective (external measurement) embodiments are suggested. Simulation studies of targets are given for defocus, astigmatism, coma and trifoil. The results for the simultaneous presence of these aberrations at a combined Strehl ratio of 0.67 indicate that the aberration levels could likely each be individually quantified to an accuracy of 0.02λ rms waves such that the vision could be improved to a Strehl ratio of 0.94.
