We propose a fast and robust thresholding method that can overcome the shortcoming of the traditional and two-dimensional (2D) Otsu's methods. Our method takes advantage of the gradient gray level to divide the 2D histogram region, and applies the traditional Otsu's thresholding method twice on two projection histograms to separate the regions of interest from the background. The experimental results show that our method is robust against noise, and it requires less computational time than the 2D Otsu's and four other thresholding methods, which also give highly satisfactory and comparable results.

Creating entertaining and educational books not only requires providing visually stimulating content but also means for students to interact, create, and express themselves. In this paper we present a new type of mixed-reality book experience, which augments an educational coloring book with user-generated three dimensional content. We explore a “pop-up book” metaphor and describe a process by which children's drawing and coloring is used as input to generate and change the appearance of the book content. Our system is based on natural feature tracking and image processing techniques that can be easily exploited for other AR publishing applications.

Real-time rendering of large animated crowds consisting thousands of virtual humans is important for several applications including simulations, games and interactive walkthroughs, but cannot be performed using complex polygonal models at interactive frame rates. For that reason, several methods using large numbers of pre-computed image-based representations, which are called as impostors, have been proposed. These methods take the advantage of existing programmable graphics hardware to compensate the computational expense while maintaining the visual fidelity. Making the number of different virtual humans, which can be rendered in real-time, not restricted anymore by the required computational power but by the texture memory consumed for the variety and discretization of their animations. In this work, we proposed an alternative method that reduces the memory consumption by generating compelling intermediate textures using image-morphing techniques. In order to demonstrate the preserved perceptual quality of animations, where half of the key-frames were rendered using the proposed methodology, we have implemented the system using the graphical processing unit and obtained promising results at interactive frame rates.

Long-range correlation analysis of urban traffic data

This paper investigates urban traffic data by analysing the long-range correlation with detrended fluctuation analysis. Through a large number of real data collected by the travel time detection system in Beijing, the variation of flow in different time periods and intersections is studied. According to the long-range correlation in different time scales, it mainly discuss the effect of intersection location in road net, people activity customs and special traffic controls on urban traffic flow. As demonstrated by obtained results, the urban traffic flow represents three-phase characters similar to highway traffic. Moreover, compared by the two groups of data obtained before and after the special traffic restrictions （vehicles with special numbered plates only run in a special workday） enforcement, it indicates that the rules not only reduce the flow but also avoid irregular fluctuation.

In this paper we present a new cross-platform approach for video game delivery in wired and wireless local networks. The developed 3D streaming and video streaming approaches enable users to access video games on set top boxes and handheld devices that natively are not capable to run PC games. During the development of the distributed gaming system we have faced a number of challenges and problems posed by the hardware and network limitations. In order to solve these problems we have developed a multilevel testing methodology which is based on user assessment and technical measures for the system under development. In this paper we focus on the technical measures and instrumentation that we use for the system's performance measurement and testing. The benefits of our testing methodology are demonstrated through examples from the development and testing work. © 2010 IEEE.

The effect of stochastic acceleration and delay probability on the velocity and the gap between vehicles in traffic flow

This paper proposes a new combined cellular automaton （CA） model considering the driver behavior of stochastic acceleration and delay with the velocity of the preceding vehicle and the gap between the successive vehicles based on the WWH model and the noise-first NaSch model. It introduces the delay probability varying with the gap, adds the anticipation headway and increases the acceleration with a certain probability. Through these simulations, not only can the metastable state and start-stop wave be obtained but also the synchronized flow which the wide moving jam results in. Moreover, the effect of stochastic acceleration and delay on traffic flow is discussed by analyzing the correlation of traffic data. This indicates that synchronized flow easily emerges in the critical area between free flow and synchronized flow when acceleration and delay are synchronized or their probability is close to 0.5.

Amongst all atmospheric phenomena, rain is probably the most commonly used effect to create realistic immersive virtual environments, and to set the mood in movie storytelling. Although not immediately obvious, the beauty of rain emanates from the interplay of the involved light-matter interaction, generating effects of refraction and reflection, coupled with scattering effects. At the core, rain consists of water droplets under the influence of gravity. Current state of the art methods of generating rain are either computationally burdening, or not realistic enough. The key idea we introduce in this paper is to consider these droplets as transparent objects in the environment matting (EM) framework. This enables careful preprocessing to discover the light transport phenomena. We end up with a free-viewpoint real-time technique of simulating realistic droplets and rain in novel environments.

In this paper we present an adaptive but robust object detector for static cameras by introducing classifier grids. Instead of using a sliding window for object detection we propose to train a separate classifier for each image location, obtaining a very specific object detector with a low false alarm rate. For each classifier corresponding to a grid element we estimate two generative representations in parallel, one describing the object's class and one describing the background. These are combined in order to obtain a discriminative model. To enable to adapt to changing environments these classifiers are learned on-line (i.e., boosting). Continuously learning (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) requires a stable system. In our method this is ensured by a fixed object representation while updating only the representation of the background. We demonstrate the stability in a long-term experiment by running the system for a whole week, which shows a stable performance over time. In addition, we compare the proposed approach to state-of-the-art methods in the field of person and car detection. In both cases we obtain competitive results.
