Automatic monitoring of beach video streams is important for improving safety, environmental monitoring, research, and education related to beach activities. This paper introduces a novel approach for monitoring water bodies by analyzing beach video streams. In contrast to earlier works, in the proposed approach we analyze not only the behavior of water bodies, or of humans on beach videos, but also the interactions between them. By integrating human activity and water behavior analysis, the approach provides new insights that are unattainable by analyzing each separately. To accomplish this objective, deep neural networks are utilized to analyze video streams from existing beach webcams. The analysis includes the detection and tracking of people and waves, as well as higher level analysis. We use the task of characterizing surfing conditions as a case study and demonstrate our ability to estimate the values of key parameters that can help determine the quality of a surf spot at a given time.

The growing technological development in the field of computer vision in general, and human action recognition (HAR), in particular, have attracted increasing number of researchers from various disciplines. Amid the variety of challenges in the field of human action recognition, one of the major issues is complex modelling which requires multiple parameters leading to troublesome training which further requires heavy configuration machines for real-time recognition. Therefore, there is a need to develop a simplified method that could result in reduced complexity, without compromising the performance accuracy. In order to address the mentioned issue, this paper proposes an approach that extracts the mean, variance and median from the skeleton joint locations and directly uses them in the classification process. The system used MCAD dataset for extracting 2D skeleton features with the help of OpenPose technique, which is suitable for the extraction of skeleton features from the 2D image instead of 3D image or using a depth sensor. Henceforth, we avoid using either the RGB images or the skeleton images in the recognition process. The method shows a promising performance with an accuracy of 73.8% when tested with MCAD dataset. © 2021 IEEE

Prior to the introduction of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), modelling and analyzing irregular data, particularly graphs, was thought to be the Achilles’ heel of deep learning. The core concept of GNNs is to find a representation by recursively aggregating the representations of a central node and those of its neighbor, and many GNNs’ designs have demonstrated its success. However, most only focus on using the first-order information between a node and its neighbors. In this paper, we introduce a central node permutation variant function through a frustratingly simple and innocent-looking modification to the core operation of a GNN, namely the Feature cOrrelation aGgregation (FOG) module, which learns the second-order information from feature correlation between a node and its neighbors in the pipeline. By adding FOG into existing variants of GNNs, we empirically verify this second-order information complements the features generated by original GNNs across a broad set of benchmarks. A tangible boost in the model’s performance is observed where the model surpasses previous state-of-the-art results by a significant margin while employing fewer parameters. e.g., 26.202% improvement on a real-world molecular dataset using graph convolutional networks.

DAMPER: A Dual-Stage Medical Report Generation Framework with Coarse-Grained MeSH Alignment and Fine-Grained Hypergraph Matching

Medical report generation is crucial for clinical diagnosis and patient management, summarizing diagnoses and recommendations based on medical imaging. However, existing work often overlook the clinical pipeline involved in report writing, where physicians typically conduct an initial quick review followed by a detailed examination. Moreover, current alignment methods may lead to misaligned relationships. To address these issues, we propose DAMPER, a dual-stage framework for medical report generation that mimics the clinical pipeline of report writing in two stages. In the first stage, a MeSH-Guided Coarse-Grained Alignment (MCG) stage that aligns chest X-ray (CXR) image features with medical subject headings (MeSH) features to generate a rough keyphrase representation of the overall impression. In the second stage, a Hypergraph-Enhanced Fine-Grained Alignment (HFG) stage that constructs hypergraphs for image patches and report annotations, modeling high-order relationships within each modality and performing hypergraph matching to capture semantic correlations between image regions and textual phrases. Finally,the coarse-grained visual features, generated MeSH representations, and visual hypergraph features are fed into a report decoder to produce the final medical report. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DAMPER in generating comprehensive and accurate medical reports, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across various evaluation metrics. The challenges posed by nonlinearities in industrial systems necessitate innovative techniques that outperform the limitations of traditional methods such as principal component analysis (PCA). While Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) offers a robust solution to handle nonlinear data, its computational requirements are a significant issue, especially for large-sized datasets. In this work, we propose a novel technique, namely, reduced kernel principal component analysis-based spectral clustering (RKPCA SpC ), to monitor and detect faults in the benchmark Tennessee Eastman process. The suggested approach addresses the complexity associated with KPCA by reducing data size during the model training phase. This reduction involves retaining only the principal components, preserving informative features, and selecting pertinent samples without compromising the original data's content. The efficacy of the proposed method is evaluated through key performance metrics, including false alarm rate (FAR), missed detection rate (MDR), detection time delay (DTD), and computation time (CT). Additionally, gained execution time (GET), gained storage space (GSP), and loss function (LF) are considered, providing a comprehensive assessment of the developed paradigms' effectiveness. The results demonstrate the promising capabilities of our proposed scheme.

The modern energy landscape is undergoing a seismic change from traditional, finite energy sources and toward cleaner, renewable alternatives. The restrictions faced by traditional sources, which are not only finite but increasingly shrink in the face of burgeoning global energy demands driven by population increase and industrial expansion, are driving this change. Although promising, renewable energy poses complications, particularly the reliance on climatic conditions. An important aspect of addressing these difficulties is effective energy management within distribution systems, which includes forecasting and optimization phases. This research focuses on forecasting using an advanced machine learning (ML) approach. Accurately forecasting renewable energy generation over time is critical for improving energy management. This technique is evaluated using a variety of performance indicators, including Mean Error (ME), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Coefficient of Determination (R 2 ). Empirical studies support the method's usefulness, demonstrating noteworthy performance with low error rates.

Three-dimensional tissue cytometry is an important technique for quantitative analysis of cell structures in large fluorescence microscopy volumes. Accurate nuclei detection and segmentation is an important step for 3D tissue cytometry. Deep learning methods have shown promising results for nuclei detection and segmentation. However, manually annotating ground truth for training deep learning methods is labor-intensive and not practical for large 3D volumes. In this paper, we propose a 3D nuclei synthesis method, known as 3DSpCycleGAN, for generating 3D ground truth volumes along with corresponding synthetic microscopy volumes. Experimental results using fluorescence microscopy volumes demonstrate that our method generates more realistic 3D volumes when evaluated both visually and quantitatively than previously reported. We also show that using the synthetic volumes generated by 3DSpCycleGAN as training data improves segmentation accuracy for deep learning segmentation techniques.

A Parallel Read-Write Circuit With Fast Amplitude-Adaptive Matching Scheme to Memristor Crossbar Array

Memristor crossbar array (MCA) is a computing-in-memory (CIM) module for computational acceleration. However, conventional read-write (R-W) circuits for MCA rely heavily on external components and have shortcoming in long writing times. To address these issues, we propose a parallel R-W circuit with a fast amplitude-adaptive matching (AAM) scheme. The fast AAM scheme is designed to accelerate time of writing memristors in MCA by adaptively adjusting the writing voltage to match an optimal amplitude. The architecture of parallel R-W circuit are outlined with the implementation of R-W processes. The design principles of parallel R-W unit, fast AAM unit, and associated control logic are described for analyzing their functions within the circuit. By integrating the parallel R-W circuit with MCA, a computing block is leveraged in a neural network for classification tasks. The experimental results demonstrate that the neural network with multiple computing blocks maintains high accuracy across various datasets (over 80%). Furthermore, the proposed AAM scheme achieves an average 54% reduction in writing time compared to that one without AAM scheme. Compared to the pulse-width scheme, the parallel R-W circuit exhibits an average 3.05× speedup in adjusting a 5×5 MCA, and the speedup efficiency is higher as the increases of MCA size. © 2025 IEEE.

Early diagnosis of colorectal polyps, before they turn into cancer, is one of the main keys for treatment. In this work, we propose a framework to help radiologists in identifying polyp candidates using virtual colonoscopy. In the proposed approach, first a colon is segmented from a CT scan, then 3D reconstruction, to generate a surface representation of the colon, is performed. From the reconstructed 3D colon, 2D images are generated using the virtual colonoscopy, Fly-In approach. To enhance polyp detection, we fuse these 2D images and the 3D colon representation by generating 3D geometric feature maps, e.g. depth and curvature maps. CNN-based models are trained and validated to detect polyps using the generated feature maps, which are combined in multi-channel images. These images are successfully used to train a CNN-based model that detects polyps with mAP ∼ 97.1%.Colorectal cancer, colon polyp, computerized tomography (CT), Detection, CNN, segmentation.

The efficacy of photovoltaic systems is significantly impacted by electrical production losses attributed to faults. Ensuring the rapid and cost-effective restoration of system efficiency necessitates robust fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) procedures. This study introduces a novel interval-gated recurrent unit (I-GRU) based Bayesian optimization framework for FDD in grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) systems. The utilization of an interval-valued representation is proposed to address uncertainties inherent in the systems, the GRU is employed for fault classification, while the Bayesian algorithm optimizes its hyperparameters. Addressing uncertainties through the proposed approach enhances monitoring capabilities, mitigating computational and storage costs associated with sensor uncertainties. The effectiveness of the proposed approach for FDD in GCPV systems is demonstrated using experimental application.
