Unrestricted camera motion and the ability to operate over a range of lens parameters are often desirable when using an off-the-shelf camera. Variations in intrinsic and extrinsic parameters induce defocus and pixel motion, both of which relate to scene structure. We propose a depth estimation approach by elegantly coupling the motion and defocus cues. We further advocate a natural extension of our framework for inpainting both depth and image, using the motion cue. Unlike traditional inpainting, our approach also considers defocus blur. This ensures that the image inpainting is coherent with respect to defocus. We use the belief propagation method in our estimation approach, which also handles occlusions and uses the color image segmentation cue. © 2010. In order to successfully locate and retrieve document images such as technical articles and newspapers, a text localization technique must be employed. The proposed method detects and extracts homogeneous text areas in document images indifferent to font types and size by using connected components analysis to detect blocks of foreground objects. Next, a descriptor that consists of a set of structural features is extracted from the merged blocks and used as input to a trained Support Vector Machines (SVM). Finally, the output of the SVM classifies the block as text or not.

We propose an adaptive motion compensated frame interpolation scheme which is capable of developing a frame rate from a lower number into a higher number and a decoded video quality at the decoder. The proposed algorithm utilizes the preliminary frames of the forward and backward directions using bilateral prediction. In the processing of the preliminary frames, an additional interpolation is performed to fill the occlusion areas. If the calculated values between the reference and current frames are larger than the predetermined threshold, the block is chosen as the occlusion area. In addition, we performed a re-search in order to acquire the best blocks, taking into account the number of available adjacent blocks for the occlusion areas. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm has better PSNR and visual quality than those of the conventional methods. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a frame interpolation algorithm using the motion information of some object within the estimated blocks. The proposed algorithm uses two initial frames that are generated based on the backward and forward frames using the motion vectors. In this process, the occlusion regions are occurred in two initial frames since the optimal block is only selected by threshold. Furthermore, the regions are irregularly appeared because of that the selected block is interpolated on half position between the estimated motion vectors. Two initial frames are merged to interpolate the occlusion regions. Also, the occlusion areas, which are still existence in the merged frame, are interpolated by using the neighboring pixel information and the available data in the occlusion block. In this paper, the experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm has better PSNR and the visual quality than the conventional algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a gender estimation technique that will determine whether a person looking at the camera is a male or female. Several facial features extracted from a face are passed to post-image-processing operations before they are sent to a rule-base classifier. We applied our technique to both static passport-like photos as well as several video sequences consisting of a single face each. Our database also contains images of females wearing headscarf as well as bald men. Our initial results showed a very promising outcome. For static face images, we obtained an accuracy of 100% correct gender estimation for females and 98% for males while for video sequences, the accuracy obtained was 87.5% for females and 70% for males.

The aim of this study is to assess the functional connectivity from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Spectral clustering algorithm was applied to the realistic and real fMRI data acquired from a resting healthy subject to find functionally connected brain regions. In order to make computation of the spectral decompositions of the entire brain volume feasible, the similarity matrix has been sparsified with the t-nearestneighbor approach. Realistic data were created to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm and comparing it to the recently proposed spectral clustering algorithm with the Nystrom approximation and also with some well-known algorithms such as the Cross Correlation Analysis (CCA) and the spatial Independent Component Analysis (sICA). To enhance the performance of the methods, a variety of data pre and post processing steps, including data normalization, outlier removal, dimensionality reduction by using wavelet coefficients, estimation of number of clusters and optimal number of independent components (ICs). Results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for functional connectivity analysis.

An algorithm for automated extraction of interest points (IP) in hyperspectral images is presented. IP are features of the image that capture information from its neighbors and are distinctive and stable under translation and rotation. IP operators for gray level images were proposed more than a decade ago and have since been studied extensively. IP are helpful in data reduction to reduce the computational burden of various algorithms by replacing an exhaustive search over the entire image domain by a probe into a concise set of highly informative points. The vector SIFT approach extends Lowe's IP operator that uses local extrema of Difference of Gaussian at multiple scales to detect interest point in gray level images by direct conversion of scalar operations such as scale-space generation, and extreme point detection into operations that take the vector nature of the image into consideration. Vector anisotropic diffusion is used for scale-space generation which enhances edges and improves IP detection. Experiments with hyperspectral images of different spatial resolutions and evaluation of IP found based on image registration is presented. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper we address the issue of recognizing nonstandard Malaysian car license plates. These plates contain nonstandard characters such as italic, cursive and connected letters, which most plate recognition systems are unable to recognize. We propose a technique using stroke extraction and analysis to recognize these nonstandard characters. The proposed technique first extracts the contour of the character and then the stroke direction which are used for classification. The advantage of this method is that the system requires no training. From the experiments performed, the method has a correct recognition accuracy of 95% and even works with standard car plates.

The quality inspection for export star fruit is still perform manually by human labor until today. Due to manual process, a real-time system for star fruit color maturity inspection is developed in this paper. In real-time application, most of the image acquisition device is using YCbCr color space data such as CCD camera. This paper presents the modification on the previous star fruit color maturity classification algorithm which is based on RGB color space into YCbCr color space. In this new modified algorithm, the system is faster than before because the star fruit maturity classification process operates without any mathematical operation involved in the feature extraction process. This process is possible as the color information can be obtained directly from the Cb and Cr component which is not the case in the RGB color space. Based on the experiment results, the classification accuracy for the modified algorithm is 96%.

We want to implement a new optimal approach for image restoration problem, which is useful for neutron radiography images enhancement to assist the physician interpreter on his evaluation. Our approach is based on using swarm intelligence optimization algorithms to solve a least squares minimization ill-posed problem, using Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) Algorithm. To get smoothed images in presence of noise, a Laplacian constraint is introduced for regularization purpose. ©2010 IEEE.
