In this paper, a contrast pyramid based image coding method is described in which a simple nonlinear difference operation is introduced to generate residual information between two contiguous level images. The representation of the residual information can be considered as a local contrast measure. As the difference image in established pyramid coding techniques, the contrast image has low variance, and data compression is achieved by quantizing the contrast image. Based on Weber's law and spatial masking of the human visual system, further data compression can be attained by selecting only perceptually significant information from the contrast image and coding it efficiently.

From the transfer functions of an acousto-optic (AO) cell, it is found that some basic imageprocessing can be accomplished by using AO cells. Instead of frequency-plane filters, the AO cells are placed directly behind the object. The one dimensional edge enhancement results using one AO cell can be improved by using two acousto-optic cells which are put in tandem and with contra-propagating sound. The dominant second derivative operation obtained from the transfer function of the undiffracted order works like a one-dimensional Laplacian operator which enables improved edge enhancement.

In this paper we present new results relative to the "expectation-maximization/maximization of the posterior marginals" (EM/MPM) algorithm for simultaneous parameter estimation and segmentation of textured images. The goal of the EM/MPM algorithm is to minimize the expected value of the number of misclassified pixels. We present new theoretical results in this paper which show that the algorithm can be expected to achieve this goal, to the extent that the EM estimates of the model parameters are close to the true values of the model parameters. We also present new experimental results demonstrating the performance of the algorithm.

In this paper, we present a new system to segment and label CT brain slices using a self-organizing Kohonen network. Our aim is to extract reliable and robust measures from CT images of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patients that can accurately describe the morphological changes in the brain as recovery progresses. Segmentation is performed by assigning a feature pattern to each voxel, consisting of a scaled family of differential geometrical invariant features. The invariant feature pattern is input to Kohonen network for an unsupervised classification of the voxels into regions.

The growth of networked multimedia systems has magnified the need for image copyright protection. One approach used to address this problem is to add an invisible structure to an image that can be used to seal or mark it. These structures are known as digital watermarks. We describe two techniques for the invisible marking of images. We analyze the robustness of the watermarks with respect to linear and nonlinear filtering, and JPEG compression. The results show that our watermarks detect all but the most minute changes to the image.

Multiresolution representation of wavelets in image decomposition and coding shows potential of developing an efficient image compression technique with minimum distortion when vector quantization (VQ) is used. This paper presents a multiresolution and adaptive approach to VQ codebook generation by employing a fuzzy distortion measure embedded in a self-organizing neural network ensuring fast convergence and minimum distortion. Multiresolution codebooks are generated for the wavelet decomposed images using neuro-fuzzy clustering algorithms resulting in significant improvement in the coding process. The signal transformation and vector quantization stages together yield at least, 64:1 bit rate reduction with good visual quality and acceptable peak signal to noise ratio and mean square error. The performance of this new VQ coding technique has been compared to that of the well-known Linde, Buzo, and Gray-VQ for a variety of image classes. In each case, the new VQ technique demonstrated superior ability for fast convergence with minimum distortion at similar bit rate reduction than the existing VQ techniques.
