This paper presents a new image abstraction approach, aiming to improve typical image related pattern recognition tasks such as segmentation, tracking, and classification. The proposed image abstraction framework performs image denoising and homogeneous region simplification, along with border and region enhancement. The proposed framework consists in a novel generalized approach of common weighted averaging denoising algorithms mixed with Unsharp Masking (USM) border enhancement techniques, to avoid typical USM artifacts as ringing. Results of the different configurations within the image abstraction framework for a cell tracking application are presented.

Accurate modeling of human teeth is mandatory for many reasons. Some of them are (1) Providing comfort to patients during mold process, and (2) Enhancing the accuracy level for oral orthodontist and dental care personnel. Shape from Shading (SFS) proved to be of great help in this problem, considering the fact that human tooth surface is textureless. In this paper, we address the problem of 3D tooth reconstruction, and improve the current algorithms. The approached developed in this paper reconstructs the teeth from single image shading with 2D-PCA shape priors that have more sophisticated reflectance model. Oren-Nayar-Wolff model was used for modeling the surface reflectance. This formulation uses shape priors as got from a set of training CT scans of real human teeth. Our experiments show promising quantitative results, which builds the infrastructure for having an optical based approach that accounts for inexpensive and radiationless human tooth reconstruction. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

This paper established a closed-loop temperature control system for a spatially-separated atomic layer deposition (S-ALD) reactor using generalized predictive control (GPC) algorithm. The GPC-based closed-loop control system rapidly and precisely stabilized the reactor temperature in the presence of thermal field disturbances. Compared with the proportion-integration differentiation (PID) control commonly used for S-ALD, the closed-loop GPC system attenuated reaction temperature oscillations when producing two-element nano-scale thin films. Furthermore, the proposed GPC system demonstrated the superiority in multi-element nano-laminates depositing efficiency by reducing the settling time with a substrate moving between different reactors. electrical and optical properties of films verified the feasibility of the proposed GPC system. Finally, experimental results presented that the microstructure of the deposited ALD nanometer thin film was improved with the developed GPC system, compared with the PID strategy. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The need to create useful information from full motion video gathered by drones is a significant motivation for devising methods to approximate human cognitive behaviors. Additionally, the regulatory needs associated with drone systems has spawned the requirement to be able to confirm, or audit, the activities of such devices. A conditional approach, as compared with a generalized video processing environment, is presented that associates practical and realistic constraints to simplify the problem of finding useful information from video acquired by a drone into something that is tractable and consistent with real-world requirements. A primary contribution of this paper is to introduce the concept of continuous cognition from a theoretical perspective, followed by a practical application derived from an operational system.

Evolutionary membrane computing is an important research direction of membrane computing that aims to explore the complex interactions between membrane computing and evolutionary computation. These disciplines are receiving increasing attention. In this paper, an overview of the evolutionary membrane computing state-of-the-art and new results on two established topics in well defined scopes (membrane-inspired evolutionary algorithms and automated design of membrane computing models) are presented. We survey their theoretical developments and applications, sketch the differences between them, and compare the advantages and limitations. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The conventional output regulation problem aims to achieve reference tracking and disturbance rejection while references and disturbances are generated by an autonomous exosystem. When the exosystem is perturbed by an external event, a novel robust perturbed output regulation problem is formulated and solved in this paper. The formulation arises from a kind of synchronization problem of multiple agents. Hence, the proposed solution leads to a decentralized control algorithm for synchronization of multiple agents with nonlinear heterogeneous dynamics.

Intravital microscopy is a uniquely powerful tool, providing the ability to characterize cell and organ physiology in the natural context of the intact, living animal. With the recent development of high-resolution microscopy techniques such as confocal and multiphoton microscopy, intravital microscopy can now characterize structures at subcellular resolution and capture events at sub-second temporal resolution. However, realizing the potential for high resolution requires remarkable stability in the tissue. Whereas the rigid structure of the skull facilitates high-resolution imaging of the brain, organs of the viscera are free to move with respiration and heartbeat, requiring additional apparatus for immobilization. In our experience, these methods are variably effective, so that many studies are compromised by residual motion artifacts. Here we demonstrate the use of IMART, a software tool for removing motion artifacts from intravital microscopy images collected in time series or in three dimensions.
