PUGAN: Physical Model-Guided Underwater Image Enhancement Using GAN with Dual-Discriminators

Due to the light absorption and scattering induced by the water medium, underwater images usually suffer from some degradation problems, such as low contrast, color distortion, and blurring details, which aggravate the difficulty of downstream underwater understanding tasks. Therefore, how to obtain clear and visually pleasant images has become a common concern of people, and the task of underwater image enhancement (UIE) has also emerged as the times require. Among existing UIE methods, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) based methods perform well in visual aesthetics, while the physical model-based methods have better scene adaptability. Inheriting the advantages of the above two types of models, we propose a physical model-guided GAN model for UIE in this paper, referred to as PUGAN. The entire network is under the GAN architecture. On the one hand, we design a Parameters Estimation subnetwork (Par-subnet) to learn the parameters for physical model inversion, and use the generated color enhancement image as auxiliary information for the Two-Stream Interaction Enhancement subnetwork (TSIE-subnet). Meanwhile, we design a Degradation Quantization (DQ) module in TSIE-subnet to quantize scene degradation, thereby achieving reinforcing enhancement of key regions. On the other hand, we design the Dual-Discriminators for the style-content adversarial constraint, promoting the authenticity and visual aesthetics of the results. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our PUGAN outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both qualitative and quantitative metrics. Human-level diagnostic performance from intelligent systems often depends on large set of training data. However, the amount of available data for model training may be limited for part of diseases, which would cause the widely adopted deep learning models not generalizing well. One alternative simple approach to small class prediction is the traditional k-nearest neighbor (kNN). However, due to the non-parametric characteristics of kNN, it is difficult to combine the kNN classification into the learning of feature extractor. This paper proposes an end-to-end learning strategy to unify the kNN classification and the feature extraction procedure. The basic idea is to enforce that each training sample and its K nearest neighbors belong to the same class during learning the feature extractor. Experiments on multiple small-class and class-imbalanced medical image datasets showed that the proposed deep kNN outperforms both kNN and other strong classifiers. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Detail-recovery Image Deraining via Dual Sample-augmented Contrastive Learning

The intricacy of rainy image contents often leads cutting-edge deraining models to image degradation including remnant rain, wrongly-removed details, and distorted appearance. Such degradation is further exacerbated when applying the models trained on synthetic data to real-world rainy images. We observe two types of domain gaps between synthetic and real-world rainy images: one exists in rain streak patterns;the other is the pixel-level appearance of rain-free images. To bridge the two domain gaps, we propose a semi-supervised detail-recovery image deraining network (Semi-DRDNet) with dual sample-augmented contrastive learning. Semi-DRDNet consists of three sub-networks: i) for removing rain streaks without remnants, we present a squeeze-and-excitation based rain residual network;ii) for encouraging the lost details to return, we construct a structure detail context aggregation based detail repair network;to our knowledge, this is the first time;and iii) for building efficient contrastive constraints for both rain streaks and clean backgrounds, we exploit a novel dual sample-augmented contrastive regularization network. Semi-DRDNet operates smoothly on both synthetic and real-world rainy data in terms of deraining robustness and detail accuracy. Comparisons on four datasets including our established Real200 show clear improvements of Semi-DRDNet over fifteen state-of-the-art methods. Automated Feature Engineering (AFE) refers to automatically generate and select optimal feature sets for downstream tasks, which has achieved great success in real-world applications. Current AFE methods mainly focus on improving the effectiveness of the produced features, but ignoring the low-efficiency issue for large-scale deployment. Therefore, in this work, we propose a generic framework to improve the efficiency of AFE. Specifically, we construct the AFE pipeline based on reinforcement learning setting, where each feature is assigned an agent to perform feature transformation and selection, and the evaluation score of the produced features in downstream tasks serve as the reward to update the policy. We improve the efficiency of AFE in two perspectives. On the one hand, we develop a Feature Pre-Evaluation (FPE) Model to reduce the sample size and feature size that are two main factors on undermining the efficiency of feature evaluation. On the other hand, we devise a two-stage policy training strategy by running FPE on the pre-evaluation task as the initialization of the policy to avoid training policy from scratch. We conduct comprehensive experiments on 36 datasets in terms of both classification and regression tasks. The results show 2.9% higher performance in average and 2x higher computational efficiency comparing to state-of-the-art AFE methods.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental illness, with 20%-40% exhibit an inadequate or poor response to the first-line antipsychotic drugs (treatment-resistant schizophrenia, TR-SZ). However, the neural mechanisms underlying this treatment-resistance in SZ remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the co-varying multimodal pattern that distinguishing among TR-SZ, non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (NTR-SZ) and healthy controls (HC) by unsupervised fusion, in which fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), fraction anisotropic (FA), and gray matter volume (GMV) were used as fusion input. 63 TR-SZs, 221 NTR-SZs, and 86 healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. Mural image inpainting is far less explored compared to its natural image counterpart and remains largely unsolved. Most existing image-inpainting methods tend to take the target image as the only input and directly repair the damage to generate a visually plausible result. These methods obtain high performance in restoration or completion of some pre-defined objects, e.g., human face, fabric texture, and printed texts, etc., however, are not suitable for repairing murals with varying subjects and large damaged areas. Moreover, due to discrete colors in paints, mural inpainting may suffer from apparent color bias. To this end, in this paper, we propose a line drawing guided progressive mural inpainting method. It divides the inpainting process into two steps: structure reconstruction and color correction, implemented by a structure reconstruction network (SRN) and a color correction network (CCN), respectively. In structure reconstruction, SRN utilizes the line drawing as an assistant to achieve large-scale content authenticity and structural stability. In color correction, CCN operates a local color adjustment for missing pixels which reduces the negative effects of color bias and edge jumping. The proposed approach is evaluated against the current state-of-the-art image inpainting methods. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in mural image inpainting. The automated generation of imaging reports proves invaluable in alleviating the workload of radiologists. A clinically applicable reports generation algorithm should demonstrate its effectiveness in producing reports that accurately describe radiology findings and attend to patient-specific indications. In this paper, we introduce a novel method, Structural Entities extraction and patient indications Incorporation (SEI) for chest X-ray report generation. Specifically, we employ a structural entities extraction (SEE) approach to eliminate presentation-style vocabulary in reports and improve the quality of factual entity sequences. This reduces the noise in the following cross-modal alignment module by aligning X-ray images with factual entity sequences in reports, thereby enhancing the precision of cross-modal alignment and further aiding the model in gradient-free retrieval of similar historical cases. Subsequently, we propose a cross-modal fusion network to integrate information from X-ray images, similar historical cases, and patient-specific indications. This process allows the text decoder to attend to discriminative features of X-ray images, assimilate historical diagnostic information from similar cases, and understand the examination intention of patients. This, in turn, assists in triggering the text decoder to produce high-quality reports. Experiments conducted on MIMIC-CXR validate the superiority of SEI over state-of-the-art approaches on both natural language generation and clinical efficacy metrics. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Depression is a mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest, which has become one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There are currently no objective diagnostic standards for depression in clinical practice. Previous studies have shown that depression causes both brain abnormalities and behavioral disorders. In this study, both electroencephalography (EEG) and eye movement signals were used to objectively detect depression. By presenting 40 carefully selected oil paintings—20 positive and 20 negative—as stimuli, we were able to successfully evoke emotions in 48 depressed patients (DPs) and 40 healthy controls (HCs) from three centers. We then used Transformer, a deep learning model, to conduct emotion recognition and depression detection. The experimental results demonstrate that: a) Transformer achieves the best accuracies of 89.21% and 92.19% in emotion recognition and depression detection, respectively; b) The HC group has higher accuracies than the DP group in emotion recognition for both subject-dependent and subject-independent experiments; c) The neural pattern differences do exist between DPs and HCs, and we find the consistent asymmetry of the neural patterns in DPs; d) For depression detection, using single oil painting achieves the best accuracies, and using negative oil paintings has higher accuracies than using positive oil paintings. These findings suggest that EEG and eye movement signals induced by oil paintings can be used to objectively identify depression.

EEG-based emotion classification has long been a critical task in the field of affective brain-computer interface (aBCI). The majority of leading researches construct supervised learning models based on labeled datasets. Several datasets have been released, including different kinds of emotions while utilizing various forms of stimulus materials. However, they adopt discrete labeling methods, in which the EEG data collected during the same stimulus material are given a same label. These methods neglect the fact that emotion changes continuously, and mislabeled data possibly exist. The imprecision of discrete labels may hinder the progress of emotion classification in concerned works. Therefore, we develop an efficient system in this paper to support continuous labeling by giving each sample a unique label, and construct a continuously labeled EEG emotion dataset. Using our dataset with continuous labels, we demonstrate the superiority of continuous labeling in emotion classification through experiments on several classification models. We further utilize the continuous labels to identify the EEG features under induced and non-induced emotions in both our dataset and a public dataset. Our experimental results reveal the learnability and generality of the relation between the EEG features and their continuous labels.
