This paper proposes a novel method to enhance out-of-focus regions in microscopic images and detect Listeria Monocytogenes(L. monocytogenes.) in biofilm on a conveyor belt from an image with the aim to count the colonies of L. monocytogenes. Consider that a microscope can focus on a single point in the sample, this limitation makes each image contain both in-focus and out-of-focus regions. These out-of- focus regions are blurred with different blurring scale, thus the proposed method uses nonlinear piecewise least-square curve-fitting filter and the gradient to enhance the out-of-focus regions. Finally, watershed algorithm and morphological operations are used to segment and count the colonies. The proposed method was evaluated on a set of 30 L. monocytogenes microscopic images and a set of 90 synthetic test images. The counting results reveal that our proposed method can improve the quality of an image by enhancing the out-of-focus regions while preserving other regions which leads to more accurate counting results.

In this paper, we present an improved version of the recently developed Fireworks Algorithm (FWA) based on several modifications. A comprehensive study on the operators of conventional FWA revealed that the algorithm works surprisingly well on benchmark functions which have their optimum at the origin of the search space. However, when being applied on shifted functions, the quality of the results of conventional FWA deteriorates severely and worsens with increasing shift values, i.e., with increasing distance between function optimum and origin of the search space. Moreover, compared to other metaheuristic optimization algorithms, FWA has high computational cost per iteration. In order to tackle these limitations, we present five major improvements of FWA: (i) a new minimal explosion amplitude check, (ii) a new operator for generating explosion sparks, (iii) a new mapping strategy for sparks which are out of the search space, (iv) a new operator for generating Gaussian sparks, and (v) a new operator for selecting the population for the next iteration. The resulting algorithm is called Enhanced Fireworks Algorithm (EFWA). Experimental evaluation on twelve benchmark functions with different shift values shows that EFWA outperforms conventional FWA in terms of convergence capabilities, while reducing the runtime significantly.

The TSP problem is considered as classical discrete optimization grouping problem, which is widely used in practice, but it is real a difficult NP problem. Simultaneously differential evolution (DE) algorithm has been proven to be a powerful optimization algorithm. Since the mutation process of DE contains a series of arithmetic operators operating on continuous space, few algorithms based on DE solve this problem nicely and the advantages of DE in continuous space cannot be used to solve TSP. To take full advantages of the strengths of DE, this paper proposes a set-based DE (S-DE) which completely follows the procedure of the original DE. We present a representation scheme to characterize the discrete problem space and by redefining its basic concept and all related operators in mutation, DE can operate directly on the original set space of the discrete optimization problems instead of performing a space transformation. In that way, the searching features of DE in continuous space is kept. In experiment, we test the performance of our proposed S-DE and the results show it is very promising.

The study of RMB (renminbi bank note, the paper currency used in China) serial number recognition draws more and more attention in recent years, for reducing financial crime, improving financial market stability and social security. The accuracy of RMB recognition relies heavily on the extraction, which is a challenging problem due to background variations and uneven illumination. In this paper, we present a new system that extracts the RMB characters directly from scanned RMB images. First, two different techniques, namely skew correction and orientation identification are used to detect the region which contains RMB serial number. Then the detected text region is binarized by a combined thresholding technique. After that, a local contrast average method is introduced to extract the RMB characters from the binarization result. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed binarization method outperforms other well-known methods. For character extraction, we report an overlap-recall rate of 79.68% and an overlap-precision rate of 98.10% respectively.
