Some human-centering issues for the Networld based on trust are discussed. People sometimes need help to understand how and when to shift from unjustified trust closer to justified distrust. Trust has aspects of an attitude, an attribution, an expectation, a feeling or belief, an intention, and a trait. Trust can be thought of as a family of relations, certainly not a single relation. Interpersonal trust is both fundamentally and subtly different from trust in automation. Threshold effects are reflected in the tendency to maintain a fixed level of reliance even as the level of trust changes, resulting in a dichotomous pattern of reliance. Cybersecurity and defense issues, including social deception, misdirection, influence, and manipulation, span all the venues of macrocognitive work in the Networld. In macrocognitive work systems, trust can also be thought of as the expectation of reciprocity from others.

Visual exploratory data analysis represents a well-accepted imaging modality for high-dimensional DCE-MRI-derived breast cancer data. We employ this paradigm for discriminating between malignant and benign lesions based on different shape descriptors thanks to proven and novel dimension reduction algorithms. We demonstrate that shape structure changes such as weighted 3D Krawtchouck moments outperform global averaging moments such as geometric moment invariants in terms of discrimination of benign/malignant lesions. The best visualization of tumor shapes in a two-dimensional space is achieved based on nonlinear mapping methods, especially the ones that consider neighborhood ranks.

Communication has an important role in multi-robot systems. It can facilitate cooperation, therefore, improve the performance of the system significantly. In this study we investigated the benefits of networked communication by experimentally evaluating the results of two search algorithms which are spiral search and informed random search. The experiments were performed in an experimental area containing obstacles and using e-puck robots where the communication ranges were ldquosimulatedrdquo with the help of an overhead camera. Each robot was allowed to (i) keep an occupancy grid based local map of the environment containing also information about the cells it has visited and (ii) exchange this information with the other robots within its communication range. The effect of the size of communication range on the performance of the system defined as the time of completion of the search task (i.e, locating the target), was investigated.

We present in this paper a supervised topic model for multi-class classification problems. To incorporate supervisory information, we jointly model documents and their labels in a graphical model called LogisticLDA, which mathematically integrates a generative model and a discriminative model in a principled way. By maximizing the posterior of document labels using logistic normal distributions, the model effectively incorporates the supervisory information to maximize inter-class distance in the topic space, while documents still enjoy the interchangeability characteristic for ease of inference. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that the model outperforms state-of-the-art supervised topic models. Compared with support vector machine, the model also achieves comparable performance, but meanwhile it discovers a topic space, which is valuable for dimension reduction, topic mining and document retrieval. © 2009 by Jia-Cheng Guo, Bao-Liang Lu, Zhiwei Li, and Lei Zhang.

Keyphrases extracted from articles are beneficial in helping people boost browsing speed, but unfortunately keyphrases are rarely available for news articles due to the high expense of labor and time for manual annotation. This paper proposes a practical approach to extracting keyphrases for Chinese news articles using the Text Rank and query log knowledge. Previous work is word based, while our approach uses phrase as its basic element. We generate phrases by employing several statistical criteria with the huge amount of queries as a training corpus. We use Text Rank, a graph-based learning algorithm, for extracting keyphrases from Chinese news articles. In addition, two instructive features, lengths and positions of phrases, are incorporated into the Text Rank model. On account of having real-time behavior and being easy to implement, spring meshes have been used for modeling deformable objects. Determining spring stiffness parameters for simulation of soft objects with high accuracy still remains a challenge. Allen Van Gelder derived an approximate formula for determining spring stiffness parameters based on strain analysis. Even though the experimental result showed the effectiveness, the method has not been investigated from a quantitative point of view. In this paper we propose a quantitative method for determining spring stiffness parameters. Moreover we propose a method to improve the accuracy by way of introducing torsional spring into the conventional spring mesh model. © 2008 The authors. All rights reserved.

Statistical learning based face detection systems search multiple scale sub-frames of an image or frame of a video stream with a trained classifier to detect face objects. If the frame is large there will be a large number of these sub-frames. Sections of the frame with a regional variance below a predefined threshold do not need to be searched as it is not possible for a face to exist in these spaces. A preprocessing system to eliminate these low variance regions of a frame is presented in this paper. A top down quad-tree deconstruction of the frame is used to accomplish this task. Regional variance is computed and tested to determine if a given quadrant should be further broken down. If below a predefined threshold that region will be eliminated in a mask image. This procedure is continued until all sections are eliminated or a defined tree depth is reached. The resulting mask image is then smoothed and subjected to thresholding, merging the remaining valid search areas. The resulting filled mask is then used to determine whether a given sub-frame should be sent to a Viola-Jones face detection cascade. Preliminary results show promise in reducing the number of sub-frames that must be considered for detection, increasing the speed of the detection system. © 2007 IEEE.

A robust method for tracking faces of multiple people moving in a scene using Kalman filter is proposed in this paper. To distinguish faces of people during partial occlusion the proposed method uses the non-parametric cloth distribution. To overcome the problem of total occlusion, faces are tracked using the values generated by Kalman prediction algorithm. The size, top-left coordinate and velocity of motion of the detected face being the parameters of the Kalman vector;the predicted values are used to locate faces in the next frame. The faces are redetected and the templates are updated at discrete time intervals when the similarity measures, between the faces detected and respective face templates, are less than a preset threshold. Skin segmentation based face detection makes the algorithm computationally simple, and updating the face template makes it invariant to pose changes. The proposed method is experimented to be invariant to lightning conditions, change of pose, and works well in the case of partial and total occlusion for a short period. © 2007 IEEE.

Concept discovery and modeling are fundamental problems in machine learning research. Real world concepts are usually high-dimensional and have complicated distributions along their dimensions. Gaussian Mixture Models(GMM) have proved useful in modeling such complicated distributions. We propose a data-driven concept modeling and discovery framework using GMM, with on-line updating mechanism for fast computation suitable for real world applications. Experiments show the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

This paper proposed a multi-agent system using the social status of wasp to solve the problem of multiple simultaneous personalized recommendations (MSPRs). This problem occurs when several personalized campaigns are conducting simultaneously. The aim of this paper is two fold: i) to mimic the behavior of a wasp colony in nature for designing a robust bioinspired algorithm and in the sequel strengthening the field of natural computing, and ii) using the collective intelligence of wasps to solve the NP-hard problem like multiple recommendations problem. The solution of MSPRs can be a new generation tool for recommendation system of e-commerce by replacing independent personalized recommendations. © 2008 IEEE.
