Features of human bones are useful to establish correlation between bone structure and age, and information about age-related bone diseases. This paper presents a new approach to quantitative analysis of cross sections of human bones using image processing techniques. The system uses the adaptive neighborhood algorithm, clustering, local covariance measures, and the fuzzy region growing algorithm. The system extracts various bone features with consistency and provides more reliable statistics. As a result, the authors are able to correlate bone features with age and possibly with age related bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

Traditional curvature measures for modeling 3-D surface classify surfaces into crisp sets based on the sign of the mean and Gaussian curvatures. However, descriptions based on such measures do not represent the intuitive descriptions in a natural way, i.e. the degree to which the segment belongs to each of the surface types in the crisp set. In addition, curvature estimates are extremely sensitive to noise due to the computation of directional derivatives, which makes classification more difficult. There exists a certain level of uncertainty/ambiguity that is not taken into account while classifying the surfaces based on the existing methods. In this paper, a novel fuzzy surface description technique, that emulates the natural description of surfaces, is proposed and demonstrated on a class of range images.

In this paper, we describe a case-based system using fuzzy logic type neural networks for diagnosing electronic systems. We present a brief derivation of OR and AND neurons and the architecture of our system. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, we show experimental results on real data from call logs collected at the technical support centre in Ericsson Australia.

An innovative and powerful method is proposed for measuring physical parameters of lines using the responses from a bank of Gabor (1946) filters. These measurements are made without resorting to an image ruler. First the system is calibrated by establishing a relationship between the frequency of the Gabor filter and line length, then the length and angle of of isolated lines can be measured. A constraint on this method is that the lines in the scene need to be separated and isolated by a minimum distance. Results indicate that Gabor filters can be successfully applied to the measurement of geometric properties of objects, especially where Gabor filters are already being used for processing tasks. The best accuracies in terms of measurement error for the line length and angle measurements were 0.81% and 0.0% respectively.

This paper discusses a technique that effectively combines conceptual graph theory with fuzzy logic for 3D object recognition. The suitability of fuzzy conceptual graphs for learning continuous valued features is brought out with a machinevision system that employs model-based object recognition. The object recognition system learns instances of segmented range objects from different views, represented in terms of fuzzy conceptual graphs as a memory aggregate. Recognition is done by deriving a conceptual graph for a query and performing graph matching. The technique is found suitable for continuous valued concepts and hence used as with a powerful capability for learning.< >

Traditionally, the robotic visual servoing/tracking problem has received attention from researchers for its interesting control and computervision issues. However many visual servoing tasks also require the ability to automatically detect moving objects. Until recently, very few efforts have been reported in the area of automatic detection of servoing targets. This paper presents a robust detection scheme for use in robotic visual servoing experiments. It detects and tracks moving objects through the use of a "figure/ground" approach. Experimentation has shown the feasibility of this approach under general conditions. This paper provides a description of the authors system implementation in an experimental robotic system, along with a collection of results. The paper also contains a discussion of problems and issues for future work.

In response to the overcrowding of transportation systems, there has been an increase in the emphasis placed upon intelligent vehicle/highway systems (IVHS). Whether the application is keeping a safe distance between vehicles on highways or allowing a pedestrian to safely cross a street, environmental sensing and control play a crucial role in IVHS applications. In this paper we present robust visual detection and tracking techniques for IVHS applications, where computervision may be the only sensor used or a part of a larger multi-sensor system. We have selected the application of pedestrian detection and tracking to demonstrate that the controlled active vision framework can provide precisely the type of information required to effectively manage traffic situations.

The system proposed in this paper uses active deformable models to track pedestrians moving in dynamic real-world scenes. First, figure pixels are separated from a fixed or slowly evolving ground image. Then, an initial segmentation process identifies interesting pixel blobs for tracking. The output of the segmentation process is used to choose the starting position of the control points of the active deformable model. Once tracking has begun, the control points are updated at frame rates by minimizing an energy function involving the relative position of model points, image data, and the characteristics of figure pixels.
