Rate control is a critical component for image and video compression Particularly under limited network bandwidth conditions, bitrate control is essential to ensure efficient image transmission by effectively allocation channel resources. In this research, since both Channel and Spatial have relationship with rate allocation, we first propose a joint Channel-wise and Spatial-wise Quantization scheme to determine optimal quantization parameters. Subsequently, we develop a quantization step estimation network to obtain parameters to efficiently allocate rate according to target rate. Experiments demonstrate that our algorithm significantly improve compressed image quality with minimal bitrate distortion and achieve accurate rate control with nearly 3% average bitrate error.

In recent years Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods have been applied to handle some of the problems inherent to model-based tracking. In this paper two issues regarding SMC are investigated in the context of estimating the 3D pose of the human arm. Firstly, we investigate how to apply a sub-space to representing the pose of a human arm more efficiently, i.e., reducing the dimensionality. Secondly, we investigate how to apply a local method to estimated the maximum a posteriori (MAP). The former issue is based on combining a screw axis representation with the position of the hand in the image. The latter issue is handled by applying a method based on maximising a proximity function, to estimate the MAP. We find that both the sub-space and the proximity function are sound strategies and that they are an improvement over the current SMC-methods. © 2003 IEEE.

In modern society there is an increasing demand to access, record and manipulate large amounts of information. This has inspired a new approach to thinking about and designing personal computers, where the ultimate goal is to produce a truly wearable computer. In this work we present a non-invasive handgesture recognition system aimed at deictic gestures. Our system is based on the powerful Sequential Monte Carlo framework which is enhanced with respect to increased robustness. This is achieved by using ratios in the likelihood function together with two image cues: edges and skin color. The system proves to be fast, robust towards noise, and quick to lock on to the object (hand). All of which is achieved without the use of special lighting or special markers on the hands, hence our system is a non-invasive solution. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Future Machine vision applications have to cope with 3D non-rigid objects. One such application is 3D pose estimation of cactus leaves, which is the topic in this paper. We apply an Active Shape Model (ASM) to estimate the 2D pose of a leaf in one image. We post-process the ASM in order to find well-defined characteristics which are located in a second image using correlation. This process provides 3D points which are used to find the 3D pose of the leaf. Tests show that 84.6% of the 3D poses are found correctly.

Development of a gesture plug-in for natural dialogue interfaces

This paper describes work in progress on the development of a plug-in automatic gesture recogniser intended for a human-computer natural speech-and-gesture dialogue interface module. A model-based approach is suggested for the gesture recognition. Gesture models are built from models of the trajectories selected finger tips traverse through physical 3D space of the human gesturer when he performs the different gestures of interest. Gesture capture employs in the initial version a data glove, later computer vision is intended. The paper outlines at a general level the gesture model design and argues for its choice, as well as the rationale behind the entire work is laid forth. As the recogniser is not yet fully implemented no test results can be presented so far. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A method for capturing high intensity dynamic range scenes with a low dynamic range camera consists in taking a series of images with different exposure settings and combining these into a single high dynamic range image. The combined image values are found by weighted averaging of values from the differently exposed images on a per-pixel basis. This paper reviews existing weighting schemes and considers their noise properties. Furthermore, a minimum-variance solution is introduced which exploits a camera noise model. Special emphasis is on the case when the camera is linear. A method is given for estimating the uncertainty of the combined image values. The results are validated experimentally.

In the last decade speech processing has been applied in commercially available products, One of the key reasons for its success is the identification and use or an underlying set or generic symbols (phonemes) constituting all speech. In this work we follow the same approach, but for the problem or human body gestures. That is, the topic or this paper is how to define a framework for automatically finding primitives for human body gestures. This is done by considering a gesture as a trajectory and then searching for points where the density of the training data is high. The trajectories are re-sampled to enable a direct comparison between the samples of each trajectory, and enable time invariant comparisons. This work demonstrates and tests the primitive's ability to reconstruct sampled trajectories. Promising test results are shown for samples from different test persons performing gestures from a small one armed gesture set. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Machine vision is today a well-established technology in industry where especially conveyer belt applications are successful. A related application area is the situation where a number of objects are located in a bin and each has to be picked from the bin. This problem is known as the automatic bin-picking problem and has a huge market potential due to the countless situations where bin-picking is done manually. In this paper we address a general bin-picking problem present at a large pump manufacturer, Grundfos, where many objects with circular openings are handled each day. We pose estimate the objects by finding the 3D opening based on the elliptic projections into two cameras. The ellipses from the two cameras are handled in a unifying manner using graph theory together with an approach that links a pose and an ellipse via the equation for a general cone. Tests show that the presented algorithm can estimate the poses for a large variety of orientations and handle both noise and occlusions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Pose estimation of people have had great progress in recent years but so far research has dealt with single persons. In this paper we address some of the challenges that arise when doing pose estimation of interacting people. We build on the pictorial structures framework and make important contributions by combining color-based appearance and edge information using a measure of the local quality of the appearance feature. In this way we not only combine the two types of features but dynamically find the optimal weighting of them. We further enable the method to handle occlusions by searching a foreground mask for possible occluded body parts and then applying extra strong kinematic constraints to find the true occluded body parts. The effect of applying our two contributions are show through both qualitative and quantitative tests and show a clear improvement on the ability to correctly localize body parts. © 2010 IEEE.

Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods have in recent years been applied to handle some of the problems inherent to model-based tracking. In this paper we suggest to apply bootstrapping to reduce the required number of particles in SMC tracking. By bootstrapping is meant to track reliable low-level image features and use them to bootstrap the high-level model-based tracking. The concept of bootstrapped SMC tracking is exemplified by monocular tracking of the 3D pose of a human arm with the position of the hand in the image as the bootstrapping information. Tests suggest that both bootstrapping is a sound strategies and an improvement over standard SMC-methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
