Extraction and recognition of text present in video has become a very popular research area in the last decade. Generally, text present in video frames is of different size, orientation, style, etc. with complex backgrounds, noise, low resolution and contrast. These factors make the automatic text extraction and recognition in video frames a challenging task. A large number of techniques have been proposed by various researchers in the recent past to address the problem. This paper presents a review of various state-of-the-art techniques proposed towards different stages (e.g. detection, localization, extraction, etc.) of text information processing in video frames. Looking at the growing popularity and the recent developments in the processing of text in video frames, this review imparts details of current trends and potential directions for further research activities to assist researchers. © 2012 IEEE.

A corpus for OCR research on mathematical expressions

This paper is concerned with research on OCR (optical character recognition) of printed mathematical expressions. Construction of a representative corpus of technical and scientific documents containing expressions is discussed. A statistical investigation of the corpus is presented, and usefulness of this analysis is demonstrated in the related research problems, namely, (i) identification and segmentation of expression zones from the rest of the document, (ii) recognition of expression symbols, (iii) interpretation of expression structures, and (iv) performance evaluation of a mathematical expression recognition system. Moreover, a groundtruthing format has been proposed to facilitate automatic evaluation of expression recognition techniques. © Springer-Verlag Berlin/Heidelberg 2005.

In this work, we present novel warping algorithms for full 2D pixel-grid deformations for face recognition. Due to high variation in face appearance, face recognition is considered a very difficult task, especially if only a single reference image, for example a mug-shot, per face is available. Usually model-based approaches with additional training data are used to cope with several types of variation occurring in facial imaging. Image warping contrarily yields a distance measure which is invariant with regard to several types of variation. This allows for precise recognition even using only very few reference observations. Due to the computationally complex problem of optimal 2D warping, pseudo-2D warping-based approaches in the past represented strong approximations of the original problem, and were mainly successful on data with low variability or rectified images. We propose a novel 2D warping method which is globally optimal and makes no prior assumtions on the data variability besides two-dimensional smootheness constraints which both avoid local mirroring and gaps and significantly speed up the optimization. Furthermore, we show that occlusion handling is imperative to obtain smooth warpings in a variety of domains. We evaluate our novel algorithm on various well known databases, such as the AR-Face and CMU-PIE database, and provide a detailed comparison to existing warping approaches. We show that by using simple relative 2D constraints, strong local features and a kernel, which is robust w.r.t. occlusions, our computationally complex approaches outperform state-of-the-art results for recognizing faces under varying expressions, occlusions and poses. Most interestingly, we achieve higher accuracy using fewer training instances per class compared to methods learning a model of the 3D shape. © 2011 IEEE.

Multimodal sentiment analysis on images with textual content is a research area aiming to understand the sentiment conveyed by visual and textual elements in the images. While multimodal sentiment analysis on images and text (reviews) has its own challenges, the combination of textual and visual content in the form of images presents new challenges as well as opportunities. In this research work, we proposed a multimodal sentiment analysis method that works on images incorporating textual elements. In the textual sentiment analysis model, we initially employed a recognition system to extract textual data from input images. Our proposed multimodal method is based on transfer learning, considering two pre-trained deep learning models, Xception, and RoBERTa, to extract features from both visual and textual content from multimedia images. We then implemented a fusion strategy to combine these two modalities (Visual Sentiment Analysis (VSA) and Textual Sentiment Analysis (TSA)) to enhance the accuracy of the proposed method and to provide a more comprehensive understanding of sentiment in multimedia content. In addition, we curated a custom dataset comprising images with associated text labels and sentiments. To ensure accurate labels, we conducted human evaluations involving thirty annotators. Our dataset includes images labeled with negative, neutral, and positive sentiments. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of combining visual and textual features for sentiment analysis. The findings from this research hold promising implications for real-world applications, such as sentiment analysis in social media, product reviews, and marketing campaigns, where both images and text play a significant role in conveying emotional context. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This paper describes a portable diagnostic telecardiology system, aimed to benefit the rural people of a third world country like India. The designed system consists of two major blocks;the first one is required to be carried to the patient home, named ¿Portable Telecardiology Kit¿. The second one, named ¿Automated Cardiac Signal Processor¿, a PC based system, to be permanently placed at the nearest rural health care center. The ¿Portable Telecardiology Kit¿ contains a portable ECG machine, a dedicated microcontroller-based full duplex communication system, both interfaced, in a single enclosure. This kit will convert the ECG signal along with a tag page (containing different information regarding patient¿s health and history of illness) to a digitized serial electromagnetic wave. The signal may be transmitted over a distance of about 7-10 km through a cordless phone under full duplex mode. The PC-based system, after receiving the transmitted signal from patient site, extract the ECG signal after proper filtering, and then pass the signal through an in-built knowledge-base. Finally, a rule-based rough set decision system is generated for the development of an inference engine for disease identification from these time-plane features. The system will generate a report indicating the preliminary level abnormalities, and the precautions that can be adopted at an early stage. The entire report is then sent to the Portable kit at the patient bed-site. © 2007 IEEE.

Pose estimation of a pedestrian helps to gather information about the current activity or the instant behaviour of the subject. Such information is useful for autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, video surveillance, etc. Although a large volume of pedestrian detection studies are available in the literature, detection of the same in situations of significant occlusions still remains a challenging task. In this work, we take a step further to propose a novel deep learning framework, called ClueNet, to detect as well as estimate the entire pose of occluded pedestrians in an unsupervised manner. ClueNet is a two stage framework where the first stage generates visual clues for the second stage to accurately estimate the pose of occluded pedestrians. The first stage employs a multi-task network to segment the visible parts and predict a bounding box enclosing the visible and occluded regions for each pedestrian. The second stage uses these predictions from the first stage for pose estimation. Here we propose a novel strategy, called Mask and Predict, to train our ClueNet to estimate the pose even for occluded regions. Additionally, we make use of various other training strategies to further improve our results. The proposed work is first of its kind and the experimental results on CityPersons and MS COCO datasets show the superior performance of our approach over existing methods. © 2019. Air Writing: Recognizing Multi-Digit Numeral String Traced in Air Using RNN-LSTM Architecture

Air writing provides a more natural and immersive way of interacting with devices, with the potential of having significant application in fields like augmented reality and education. However, such systems often rely on expensive hardware, making them less accessible for general purposes. In this study, we propose a robust and inexpensive system for the recognition of multi-digit numerals traced in an air-writing environment which uses only a generic device camera for input. We employ a sliding window-based algorithm to isolate a small segment of the input for processing. A dual network configuration consisting of RNN-LSTM networks are used for noise elimination and digit recognition. We conduct our experiments on English numerals using the MNIST dataset as the baseline model to allow easy adaptability of our method. Our results are further improved by the use of Pendigits and ISI-Air online datasets. We observed a drop in accuracy with increase in the number of digits owing to the accumulation of transition noise. However, bi-directional scanning considerably reduces the impact of such noise on the recognition accuracy. Under standard conditions, our system produced an accuracy of 98.75% and 85.27% for single and multi-digit English numerals, respectively. Incorporation of selective frame skipping in the sliding window algorithm resulted in a 60% reduction in computational time, significantly improving the system performance. Photomosaic images are composite images composed of many small images called *** its overall visual effect,a photomosaic image is similar to the target image,and photomosaics are also called“montage art”.Noisy blocks and the loss of local information are the major obstacles in most methods or programs that create photomosaic *** solve these problems and generate a photomosaic image in this study,we propose a tile selection method based on error minimization.A photomosaic image can be generated by partitioning the target image in a rectangular pattern,selecting appropriate tile images,and then adding them with a weight *** on the principles of montage art,the quality of the generated photomosaic image can be evaluated by both global and local *** the proposed framework,via an error function analysis,the results show that selecting a tile image using a global minimum distance minimizes both the global error and the local error ***,the weight coefficient of the image superposition can be used to adjust the ratio of the global and local ***,to verify the proposed method,we built a new photomosaic creation dataset during this *** experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a low mean absolute error and that the generated photomosaic images have a more artistic effect than do the existing approaches.

This paper is presenting a multi robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework for environment modelling using 2D and 3D features. The proposed solution is using a team of mobile robots which are exploring unknown environment with unknown poses. Each team member is allowed to build its independent features based SLAM solution and to share the local map model among other mates. By matching the overlapping tendency of any two mates, a map merging strategy is introduced which in result is building global map. The overall approach has tested in 2D and 3D features based environment and results have shown. © 2014 IEEE.

Automatically product counting in the handmade process plays a vital role in the manufacturing industry, especially at the sewing industry. Nevertheless, there is currently a few methods to count the product number in the hand sewing process from surveillance video automatically. Due to the sewing procedure is a cyclical action, the product counting in hand sewing process is regarded as periodic action temporal localization and counting problem. In this paper, in order to solve this problem, we propose a novel two-path method, based on pose estimation and region-based convolutional neural network. The pose estimation method is used to obtain the trajectory information of human joint points, and the periodic action is located by detecting the periodic changes in joint trajectory. An effective two-threshold method is proposed to locate each action and count the number of periodic action from the trajectory information. To more accurately localization, we use a convolutional neural network to predict whether the workbench is empty or not. We fuse the results of joint trajectory and the status of the workbench to adjust the final periodic action localization and counting the number. To verify the proposed method, we built a new video database collected in the real sewing industry. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective and constructive at periodic action localization and counting in the video for the sewing industry. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
