India is a multilingual multiscript country with more than 18 languages and 10 different major scripts. Not enough research work towards recognition of handwritten characters of these Indian scripts has been done. Tamil, an official as well as popular script of the southern part of India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka has a large character set which includes many compound characters. Only a few works towards handwriting recognition of this large character set has been reported in the literature. Recently, HP Labs India developed a database of handwritten Tamil characters. In the present paper, we describe an off-line recognition approach based on this database. The proposed method consists of two stages. In the first stage, we apply an unsupervised clustering method to create a smaller number of groups of handwritten Tamil character classes. In the second stage, we consider a supervised classification technique in each of these smaller groups for final recognition. The features considered in the two stages are different. The proposed two-stage recognition scheme provided acceptable classification accuracies on both the training and test sets of the present database.

In the present article, we describe a novel direction code based feature extraction approach for recognition of online Bangla handwritten basic characters. We have implemented the proposed approach on a database of 7043 online handwritten Bangla (a major script of the Indian subcontinent) character samples, which has been developed by us. This is a 50-class recognition problem and we achieved 93.90% and 83.61% recognition accuracies respectively on its training and test sets.

Image clustering solely based on visual features without any knowledge or background information suffers from the problem of semantic gap. In this paper, we propose SS-NMF: a semi-supervised non-negative matrix factorization framework for image clustering. Accumulated relevance feedback in a CBIR system is treated as user provided supervision for guiding the image clustering. We consider the set of positive images in the feedback as constraints on the clustering specifying that the images "must" be clustered together. Similarly, negative images provide constraints specifying that they "cannot" be clustered along with the positive images. Through an iterative algorithm, we perform symmetric tri-factorization of the image-image similarity matrix to infer the clustering. Theoretically, we prove the correctness of SS-NMF by showing that the algorithm is guaranteed to converge. Through experiments conducted on general purpose image datasets, we demonstrate the superior performance of SS-NMF for clustering images effectively. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Web image clustering has drawn significant attention in the research community recently. However, not much work has been done in using multi-modal information for clustering Web images. In this paper, we address the problem of Web image clustering by simultaneous integration of visual and textual features from a graph partitioning perspective. In particular, we modelled visual features, images, and words from the surrounding text of the images using a tripartite graph. This graph is actually considered as a fusion of two bipartite graphs that are partitioned simultaneously by the proposed Consistent Isoperimetric High-order Co-clustering(CIHC) framework. Although a similar approach has been adopted before, the main contribution of this work lies in the computational efficiency, quality in Web image clustering and scalability to large image repositories that CIHC is able to achieve. We demonstrate this through experimental results performed on real Web images. Copyright 2007 ACM.

This paper presents two-way clustering of microarray data using fuzzy adaptive subspace iteration (ASI) based algorithm for knowledge discovery in microarrays. It is widely believed that each gene is involved in more than one cellular function or biological process. The proposed fuzzy ASI assigns a relevance value to each gene associated with each cluster. These functional categories are ranked based on their potential in providing maximal separation between the two tissues classes; which is an indication of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Empirical analyses on simulated, 100 artificial microarray datasets are used to quantify the results obtained using the fuzzy-ASI algorithm. Further analyses on different microarray cancer datasets revealed several important genes that are relevant with various cancers.

In some Thai documents, a single text line of a document page may contain both Thai and English scripts. For the optical character recognition (OCR) of such a document page it is better to identify, at first, Thai and English script portions and then to use individual OCR system of the respective scripts on these identified portions. In this paper, a SVM based method is proposed for identification of word-wise printed English and Thai scripts from a single line of a document page. Here, at first, the document is segmented into lines and then lines are segmented into character groups (words). In the proposed scheme, we identify the script of the individual character group combining different character features obtained from structural shape, profile, component overlapping information, topological properties, water reservoir concept etc. Based on the experiment on 6110 data we obtained 99.36% script identification accuracy from the proposed scheme.

This paper describes a portable diagnostic telecardiology system, aimed to benefit the rural people of a third world country like India. The designed system consists of two major blocks; the first one is required to be carried to the patient home, named 'Portable Telecardiology Kit'. The second one, named 'Automated Cardiac Signal Processor', a PC based system, to be permanently placed at the nearest rural health care center. The 'Portable Telecardiology Kit' contains a portable ECG machine, a dedicated microcontroller-based full duplex communication system, both interfaced, in a single enclosure. This kit will convert the ECG signal along with a tag page (containing different information regarding patient's health and history of illness) to a digitized serial electromagnetic wave. The signal may be transmitted over a distance of about 7-10 km through a cordless phone under full duplex mode. The PC-based system, after receiving the transmitted signal from patient site, extract the ECG signal after proper filtering, and then pass the signal through an in-built knowledge-base. Finally, a rule-based rough set decision system is generated for the development of an inference engine for disease identification from these time-plane features. The system will generate a report indicating the preliminary level abnormalities, and the precautions that can be adopted at an early stage. The entire report is then sent to the Portable kit at the patient bed-site.

In order to help understand how the genes are affected by different disease conditions in a biological system, clustering is typically performed to analyze gene expression data. In this paper, we propose to solve the clustering problem using a graph theoretical approach, and apply a novel graph partitioning model -isoperimetric graph partitioning (IGP), to group biological samples from gene expression data. The IGP algorithm has several advantages compared to the well-established spectral graph partitioning (SGP) model. First, IGP requires a simple solution to a sparse system of linear equations instead of the eigen-problem in the SGP model. Second, IGP avoids degenerate cases produced by spectral approach to achieve a partition with higher accuracy. Moreover, we integrate unsupervised gene selection into the proposed approach through two-way ordering of gene expression data, such that we can eliminate irrelevant or redundant genes in the data and obtain an improved clustering result. We evaluate our approach on several well-known problems involving gene expression profiles of colon cancer and leukemia subtypes. Our experiment results demonstrate that IGP constantly outperforms SGP and produces a better result that is closer to the original labeling of sample sets provided by domain experts. Furthermore, the clustering accuracy is improved significantly when IGP is integrated with the unsupervised gene (feature) selection.

Image segmentation methods like active shape models, active appearance models or snakes require an initialisation that guarantees a considerable overlap with the object to be segmented. In this paper we present an approach that localises anatomical structures in a global manner by means of Markov Random Fields (MRF). It does not need initialisation, but finds the most plausible match of the query structure in the image. It provides for precise, reliable and fast detection of the structure and can serve as initialisation for more detailed segmentation steps. Sparse MRF Appearance Models (SAMs) encode a priori information about the geometric configurations of interest points, local features at these points and local features along the edges of adjacent points. This information is used to formulate a Markov Random Field and the mapping of the modeled object (e.g. a sequence of vertebrae) to the query image interest points is performed by the MAX-SUM algorithm. The local image information is captured by novel symmetry-based interest points and local descriptors derived from Gradient Vector Flow. Experimental results are reported for two data-sets showing the applicability to complex medical data.

Document clustering without any prior knowledge or background information is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose SS-NMF: a semi-supervised non- negative matrix factorization framework for document clustering. In SS-NMF, users are able to provide supervision for document clustering in terms of pairwise constraints on a few documents specifying whether they "must" or "cannot" be clustered together. Through an iterative algorithm, we perform symmetric tri-factorization of the document- document similarity matrix to infer the document clusters. Theoretically, we show that SS-NMF provides a general framework for semi-supervised clustering and that existing approaches can be considered as special cases of SS-NMF. Through extensive experiments conducted on publicly available data sets, we demonstrate the superior performance of SS-NMF for clustering documents.
