A variable structure model of neurons’ application in computer vision

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

With increasingly challenging applications for quadrotors, higher requirements are emerging for tracking accuracy and safety. While high accuracy is a prerequisite for complex tasks, safety is ensured through tolerance to actuator faults and resistance to external disturbances. In this article, adaptive robust control (ARC) integrated with Gaussian processes (GPs), i.e., ARC-GP, is proposed to achieve enhanced accuracy, fault tolerance, and anti-disturbance. These three requirements are interrelated and affected by uncertainties. The primary idea of this article is to categorize uncertainties into parametric and nonparametric types, which are then addressed through parameter adaptation and GP, respectively. First, a detailed dynamic model is established, including actuator models that reflect different types of faults corresponding to changes in different physical parameters. Then, parameter adaptation is designed, with direct and indirect methods adopted for different parameters. In particular, the actuator parameters are effectively estimated to achieve targeted fault compensation. Regarding GP for nonparametric uncertainties, its model parameters are also updated via parameter adaptation. The GP thereby also learns parameter estimation errors along with external disturbances. Accordingly, ARC controllers are designed, for which robust feedback terms are constructed to further mitigate uncertainties on the basis of the covariances predicted by GP. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed ARC-GP can actively tolerate various types of actuator faults and better resist wind disturbances. © 2013 IEEE.

Multisensor fusion estimation of nonlinear systems with intermittent observations and heavy-tailed noises

Inspired by the robust student t-distribution based nonlinear filter(RSTNF), a student tdistribution and unscented transform(UT) based filter for state estimation of heavy-tailed nonlinear dynamic systems, a modified RSTNF for intermittent observations is derived. The fusion estimation for nonlinear multisensor systems with intermittent observations and heavy-tailed measurement and process noises is *** this work, the centralized fusion, the sequential fusion, and the na¨?ve distributed fusion algorithms are presented, respectively. Theoretical analysis shows that the presented algorithms are effective, which are the efficient extension of the classical unscented Kalman filter(UKF) or the cubature Kalman filter(CKF) based algorithms with Gaussian noises. Simulation results show that the presented algorithms are effective and feasible.

In this paper, we introduce a systematic design of an end-to-end cyber-secure monitoring and safe operation framework for solar photovoltaic (PV)-rich microgrids, by focusing on the use of on-line attack detector for defending against potential cyber-physical attacks and sensor measurement data processing for operational safety. The proposed approach is based on: 1) identifying component models using their input and output measurements;2) dynamic watermarking (DW) methodology for on-line cyber-attack detection and its timing;and 3) an adaptive event-driven safe shutdown procedure after attack detection. It is shown how these three components interactive steps jointly to ensure safe operation under both normal operational scenarios and compromised operational scenarios with some malicious sensors caused by cyber-attacks on solar PV microgrids. Through this on-line integration, the proposed framework dynamically adapts to varying solar irradiance, load demands, operating conditions, and potential cyber-physical attacks. This forms a cyber-physical system which can pro-actively detect and mitigate potential cyber-physical attacks on solar PV microgrids. We describe its proof-of-concept implementation using real-world industrial solar farm data provided by the CenterPoint Energy. This study contributes to enhancing the cyber-security and safe operation of solar PVrich power systems, offering a scalable solution to other types of emerging renewable-rich energy distribution systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Controlled islanding plays an essential role in preventing the blackout of power *** there are several studies on this topic in the past,no enough attention is paid to the uncertainty brought by renewable energy sources(RESs)that may cause unpredictable unbalanced power and the observabilit>T of power systems after islanding that is essential for back-up black-start ***,a novel controlled islanding model based on mixed-integer second-order cone and chance-constrained programming(MISOCCP)is proposed to address these ***,the uncertainty of RESs is characterized by their possibility distribution models with chance constraints,and the requirements,e.g.,system observability,for rapid back-up black-start measures are also ***,a law of large numbers(LLN)based method is em-ployed for converting the chance constraints into deterministic ones and reformulating the non-convex model into convex ***,case studies on the revised IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus power systems as well as the comparisons among different models are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** results show that the proposed model can result in less unbalanced power and better observability after islanding compared with other models.

Automatic Speaker Identification (ASI) is so crucial for security. Current ASI systems perform well in quiet and clean surroundings. However, in noisy situations, the robustness of an ASI system against additive noise and interference is a crucial factor. An investigation of the impact of interference on ASI system performance is presented in this paper, which introduces algorithms for achieving high ASI system performance. The objective is to resist the interference of various forms. This paper presents two models for the ASI task in the presence of interference. The first one depends on Normalized Pitch Frequency (NPF) and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) as extracted features and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) as a classifier. In this model, we investigate the utilization of a Discrete Transform (DT), such as Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Sine Transform (DST), to increase the robustness of extracted features against different types of degradation through exploiting the sub-band decomposition characteristics of DWT and the energy compaction property of DCT and DST. This is achieved by extracting features directly from contaminated speech signals in addition to features extracted from discrete transformed signals to create hybrid feature vectors. The enhancement techniques, such as Spectral Subtraction (SS), Winer Filter, and adaptive Wiener filter, are used in a preprocessing stage to eliminate the effect of the interference on the ASI system. In the second model, we investigate the utilization of Deep Learning (DL) based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with speech signal spectrograms and their Radon transforms to increase the robustness of the ASI system against interference effects. CATPlan: Loss-based Collision Prediction in End-to-End Autonomous Driving

In recent years, there has been increased interest in the design, training, and evaluation of end-to-end autonomous driving (AD) systems. One often overlooked aspect is the uncertainty of planned trajectories predicted by these systems, despite awareness of their own uncertainty being key to achieve safety and robustness. We propose to estimate this uncertainty by adapting loss prediction from the uncertainty quantification literature. To this end, we introduce a novel light-weight module, dubbed CATPlan, that is trained to decode motion and planning embeddings into estimates of the collision loss used to partially supervise end-to-end AD systems. During inference, these estimates are interpreted as collision risk. We evaluate CATPlan on the safety-critical, nerf-based, closed-loop benchmark NeuroNCAP and find that it manages to detect collisions with a 54.8% relative improvement to average precision over a GMM-based baseline in which the predicted trajectory is compared to the forecasted trajectories of other road users. Our findings indicate that the addition of CATPlan can lead to safer end-to-end AD systems and hope that our work will spark increased interest in uncertainty quantification for such systems. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) rely on graph convolutions to exploit meaningful patterns in networked data. Based on matrix multiplications, convolutions incur in high computational costs leading to scalability limitations in practice. To overcome these limitations, proposed methods rely on training GNNs in smaller number of nodes, and then transferring the GNN to larger graphs. Even though these methods are able to bound the difference between the output of the GNN with different number of nodes, they do not provide guarantees against the optimal GNN on the very large graph. In this paper, we propose to learn GNNs on very large graphs by leveraging the limit object of a sequence of growing graphs, the graphon. We propose to grow the size of the graph as we train, and we show that our proposed methodology - learning by transference - converges to a neighborhood of a first order stationary point on the graphon data. A numerical experiment validates our proposed approach. © 2023 IEEE.
