The study of structural and electrical properties of self-assembled ZnO nanoparticles in polystyrene-acrylic acid, [PS] m /[PAA] n , diblock copolymer on p-type (100) Si substrates is reported. The particles were developed in [PS] m /[PAA] n with four different block repeat spherical nanodomains is used to template the ZnO nanoparticles onto the substrates. Our methodology for the ZnO nanoparticle synthesis involves incorporating the ZnCl 2 precursor in the copolymer in liquid phase, spincasting the doped solution on the substrate and, then converting the precursor into ZnO. Room temperature I-V characteristics of the ZnO nanocomposite film on p-type (100) Si, measured for the first time, exhibited rectifying junction properties with an ideality factor n=1.7, and the transport mechanism in this system was evaluated from the electrical studies and discussed

The capture effect in wireless random-access networks has been widely studied in the literature. Under capture, a transmission is successfully received at the destination, even in the presence of other transmissions, if the received signal to interference ratio exceeds a threshold. However, most studies of capture are limited to single-destination networks (such as an isolated base station in a cellular network). In this paper, we study capture in wireless networks that have multiple destinations. We use simulation to evaluate throughput performance for different networks, and demonstrate the impact of the capture threshold as well as the impact of the user distribution. The novelty of our approach includes capture under a realistic physical layer model and under the multiple-destination architecture that creates interference among users who transmit to different destinations

This paper presents a study of the behaviour of electrically actuated RF-MEMS switches with ohmic contact. We will discuss about the relationship between the actuation voltage, displacement and the corresponding contact force experienced by the switch. We will demonstrate the linear behaviour of the switch when factors such as width or length of the switch arm are varied. Experimental results for DC actuation are also presented.

This paper presents a system that tracks human heads in real-time under unconstrained environments where target occlusion, varying illumination, and cluttered backgrounds exist. Tracking is formulated as an active visual servo problem based on the integration of a saccade and a smooth pursuit processes. The head is modelled as an ellipse computed from the color clusters of candidate targets using a robust least square ellipse fitting algorithm. The Farnsworth Perceptually Uniform Color Model is employed to represent the color information of the visual objects. Kalman filtering is applied to the head ellipse to track the evolution of the position, size, and orientation of the target such that the occlusion of objects with similar color and shape as those of the target are effectively accommodated. Experiments with tracking scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents the design of a robust iterative learning controller for the case of a plant with interval model uncertainty in the "A-matrix" of its state space description. First order perturbation theory is utilized to find bounds on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the powers of A when A is an interval matrix. These bounds are then used for calculation of the interval uncertainty of the Markov matrix, which can then be used to design an iterative learning controller that ensures monotonic convergence for all systems in the interval plant

We consider a wireless ad hoc network where each node employs a single-beam directional antenna and is provisioned with limited energy. We are interested in an online multicast routing algorithm for successive multicast communication requests with the aim of maximizing network lifetime. The beamforming property associated with single-beam directional antenna introduces some unique problems that do not exist for omnidirectional antennas and therefore significantly increases the design space for routing algorithms. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we provide some important theoretical understanding on various multicast problems and deduce that even an offline version of this problem is NP-hard. Second, we develop a highly competitive online heuristic algorithm that takes network lifetime consideration directly into iterative calculations and show that an algorithm designed under this methodology provides consistently better performance than the current state-of-the-art algorithm that takes remaining energy into iterative calculations. The theoretical results and heuristic algorithm in this paper offer some important insights on algorithmic design for energy-constrained wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas.

This paper addresses the issue of reliable satisfaction of customer demand by unreliable production systems. Using a simple Production-Storage-Customer model, we show that this can be accomplished by filtering out production randomness. The filtering of randomness is ensured by finished goods buffers (filtering in space) and shipping periods (filtering in time). The following question is considered: How are filtering in space and in time interrelated? As an answer, we show that there exists a conservation law: In lean manufacturing systems, the amount of filtering in space multiplied by the amount of filtering in time (both measured in appropriate dimensionless units) is practically constant.

This paper presents an H infin -based design technique for synthesis of higher-order iterative learning controllers (ILC) for plants subject to iteration-domain input/output disturbances and plant model uncertainty. Using a formulation of the higher-order ILC problem into a high-dimensional MIMO discrete-time system, it is shown how the addition of input/output disturbances and plant model uncertainty to the ILC problem can be cast into a standard H infin framework. An algebraic approach to solving the problem in this framework is presented, resulting in a sub-optimal controller that can achieve both stability and robust performance. The key observation is that H infin synthesis can be used for higher-order ILC design to achieve reliable performance in the presence of iteration-varying external disturbances and model uncertainty

This paper computes bounds on the Schur stability radius for use in designing robust iterative learning controllers. The discrete Lyapunov equation is used to compute the Schur stability radius of the ILC system for the case of parametric or interval perturbations in the system Markov parameters. This paper is distinct from the existing ILC works in that the interval robustness concepts are integrated with asymptotic stability and monotonic convergence conditions to suggest design of the learning gain matrix that makes the system robust against interval model uncertainties up to a computable bound. After derivations of the analytical stability radius, optimization schemes are suggested to design the learning gain matrix. The proposed approach allows design of causal/noncausal time-varying learning matrix gains.
