A rotation and scale invariant face detection algorithm based on the texture of a human face is proposed. Wavelet packet analysis is performed on the test image to get the coefficients. It is observed that wavelet packet decomposition until third level is sufficient enough to get the necessary frequencial components essential for classifying faces and nonfaces. Rotation invariant textural features are extracted from the wavelet coefficients. A scale invariant distance measure between the feature vectors of each of the candidate faces and the prototype face image is proposed to classify the candidate faces into faces and nonfaces. The detection process implements a nonlinear luminance based lighting compensation method, which is very efficient in enhancing and restoring the natural colors into the images taken in darker and varying lighting environments. The novel detection process proposed is highly efficient in terms of speed and accuracy in detecting frontal view faces in a complex background. The face detection performance of the proposed system is comparable to other reported leading systems.

We propose a new image enhancement algorithm INDANE (integrated neighborhood dependent approach for nonlinear enhancement of color images), which is applied to improve the visibility of the dark regions in digital images. INDANE is a combination of two independent processes: luminance enhancement and contrast enhancement. The luminance enhancement, also regarded as a process of dynamic range compression, is essentially an intensity transformation based on a specifically designed nonlinear transfer function. The contrast enhancement transforms the pixel's intensity based on the relationship between the center pixel and its surrounding pixels. For color images, they are firstly converted to intensity (grayscale) images, and then are treated by the proposed image enhancement process.

The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for contentbased semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, recent advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the first and the second version of the reference system are presented and the motivation behind the different approaches followed during the development of these two versions is discussed. Experimental results for both systems, using a common collection of images, are shown. Additionally, a comparative evaluation of the two versions both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency is performed, allowing the evaluation of the system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with the reference system, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. This illustrates the suitability of the SCHEMA reference system in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information, ranging from segmentation algorithms to indexing features and methodologies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The goal of this study is to present novel, multifusion, optical imaging sensing principles, based on laser polarimetric imaging of targets surrounded by scattered media, using the Mueller matrices based formalism. Specifically, the novelty of the imaging system consists in the fusion of dual-energy imaging principles, with polarimetric imaging principles at varying focal lengths and exposures. The experimental results indicate clearly that, high specificity images can be obtained by transmitted and scattered photons from several media, by means of the proposed technique.

This paper describes a fusion of visual and thermal infrared (IR) images for robust face recognition. Two types of fusion methods are discussed: data fusion and decision fusion. Data fusion produces an illumination-invariant face image by adaptively integrating registered visual and thermal face images. Decision fusion combines matching scores of individual face recognition modules. In the data fusion process, eyeglasses, which block thermal energy, are detected from thermal images and replaced with an eye template. Three fusion-based face recognition techniques are implemented and tested: Data fusion of visual and thermal images (Df), Decision fusion with highest matching score (Fh), and Decision fusion with average matching score (Fa). A commercial face recognition software FaceIt® is used as an individual recognition module. Comparison results show that fusion-based face recognition techniques outperformed individual visual and thermal face recognizers under illumination variations and facial expressions.

The authors review the space mapping (SM) and the SM-based surrogate (modeling) concepts and their applications in engineering modeling and design optimization. The aim of SM is to achieve a satisfactory solution with a minimal number of computationally expensive "fine" model evaluations. SM procedures iteratively update and optimize surrogates based on a fast physically-based "coarse" model. Also review the original, aggressive and implicit SM (ISM) techniques. A "cheese-cutting" problem illustrates the ISM concept. Significant recent practical applications are reviewed.

A novel distributed power control (DPC) scheme for cellular networks in the presence of radio channel uncertainties such as path loss, shadowing, and Rayleigh fading is presented. Since these uncertainties can attenuate the received signal strength and can cause variations in the received signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), the proposed DPC scheme maintains a target SIR at the receiver provided the uncertainty is slowly varying with time. The DPC estimates the time varying nature of the channel quickly and uses the information to arrive at a suitable transmitter power value. Further, the standard assumption of a constant interference during a link's power update used in other works in the literature is relaxed. A CDMA-based cellular network environment is used to compare the proposed scheme with earlier approaches. The results show that our DPC scheme can converge faster than others by adapting to the channel variations. The proposed DPC scheme can render outage probability of 5 to 30% in the presence of uncertainties compared with other schemes of 50 to 90% while consuming low power per active mobile user. In other words, the proposed DPC scheme allows significant increase in network capacity while consuming low power values even when the channel is uncertain.

This paper summarizes the various components of face recognition research conducted at the IRIS Lab. First, fusion of visual and thermal infrared (IR) images for robust face recognition is discussed. Two techniques are implemented: data fusion and decision fusion. With the knowledge that eyeglasses block the emission of thermal energy, an algorithm is designed to detect and replace eyeglasses with an eye template in thermal images. A commercial face recognition software (FaceIt/spl reg/) is used in the evaluation of the various fusion algorithms. Comparison results show that fusion-based face recognition outperforms individual visual or thermal face recognizers under illumination variations and facial expressions. Efforts in the 3D arena are also described. Results of high resolution stereo-based 3D reconstruction of faces are shown and analyzed, in a first approach, then in a second approach, a warping technique is applied to overlay color and thermal textures on 3D mannequin head models, obtained using a laser range scanner.

Enhancement of stents using interference of low-frequency ultrasonic echo signals

Purpose. We set out to enhance the imaging of stents used for coronary coarctation surgery without imaging the reticulation of the stent. Because the stent is a reticulated structure, there is a relation between ultrasound wavelength and the interstice reticulation that produces the echo. Methods. First we performed computer simulation by ultrasound frequency of transmitted signals to analyze this relation. Then, instead of controlling the transmitted wave, we processed the returned signals through a band-pass filter because of the difficulty of controlling the transmitted waves of diagnostic ultrasound equipment. Following this, we conducted experiments on an agar gel phantom containing a stent to verify the effectiveness of this method. Results. The simulation confirmed that the stent was apparent when the ultrasonic wavelength equaled the product of an integer and twice the interval of the reticulation of the stent. Application of a band-pass filter of 0.8 to 1.5MHz to the waveform returned from the agar gel phantom containing the stent. Conclusions. The effectiveness of this method in depicting the stent was confirmed. © The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine 2004.
