As low resolution shots, rotations of the head with respect to the camera, face deformation due to speech and so on inflict a great deal of uncertainty in FAP measurements, uncertainty is also inherent in the process of expression analysis. We tackle such uncertainty via the observation that user emotions do not typically alter rapidly very often. Thus, possibilistic evidence may be gathered from each frame about the user expression; evidence from the current and recent frames can be combined using evidence theory.

Quantum computing offers immense speedup in performing tasks such as data encryption and searching. The quantum algorithms can be modeled using classical computing devices, however classical computer simulations cannot deal efficiently with the parallelism present in quantum algorithms. The quantum circuit model for quantum algorithms is sufficient to describe the known quantum algorithms. Using analogies between quantum and digital circuits, we design the emulator of quantum algorithms in FPGAs that allows efficient experimentation with new quantum algorithms. This paper concentrates on new techniques for modeling quantum circuits, including the entanglement and probabilistic computing realization, as well as the critical issues in the required precision of computing.

The reverse link error probability of multicell direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems with beamforming and Rake receivers is evaluated in this paper. The impact of power control schemes on the error probability is examined, considering power-based power control (PW-PC) and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) based power control (SIR-PC). Expressions for the error probability as a function of the number of users per cell, the number of antenna elements, the number of Rake receiver fingers, and the CDMA processing gain are derived and both multipath interference and interference due to other users (own and other cells) are taken into consideration in the evaluation. Numeric results indicate that CDMA systems with different power control schemes have the same reverse link user capacity for a given target bit-error rate. However, the SIR-PC approach consumes less power than PW-PC when the number of users is smaller than the user capacity.

Reverse link capacity of a direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) system in a multicell environment has been studied recently and significant capacity improvement due to the use of beamforming has been observed. However, system performance with beamforming is affected by several impairments, such as direction of arrival (DOA) estimation errors, array perturbations and mutual coupling. The reverse link performance of CDMA systems with beamforming under these impairments (imperfect beamforming) is investigated. A simplified beamforming model is developed to evaluate the system performance in terms of user capacity and outage probabilities. Both signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) based power control and strength-based power control are considered. The capacity degradation due to different impairments is shown and outage probabilities under different power control schemes are compared.

Adaptive beamforming has been shown to substantially improve the performance of a slotted Aloha packet radio system. In this paper we present a slotted Aloha based random access protocol designed to be employed in conjunction with adaptive beamforming, for use in a sectorized wireless system. The focus is on a cross-layer design approach, in which information about the status of packet transmissions is utilized to dynamically adapt antenna beams among the sectors in a cell. This scheme is especially robust against the network inefficiencies due to uneven and time-varying traffic load densities within the sectors of a cell. Simulation results demonstrate the substantial enhancement in throughput and delay performance due to the proposed scheme.

Our multimodal interface integrates speech recognition, natural language understanding, spatial reasoning and human cognitive models for completing specific tasks and for perspective-taking in locative oriented tasks. With natural language and gestures, we believe human-robot interaction and communication is facilitated. Instead of concentrating on the various modalities of the interface, users can concentrate on the task at hand. Likewise, by incorporating human cognitive models for handling spatial information and perspective-taking, as well as for specific task completion, a better match with the expectations that humans acquire from their human-human interactions should be obtained, further facilitating cooperation and collaboration in human-robot interactions.

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive model of the motor control system which consists of three major components: the motor cortex which is responsible for strategic decisions, i.e., constructing the precise trajectory to be followed, the basal ganglia which is responsible for exciting the correct neuronal assemblies, and finally, the cerebellum which is responsible for tactical decisions. It is shown how a robust-hybrid automaton constructed from learned primitives can provide a comprehensive model of the motor control system. In the paper, we discuss how this model explains interesting biological behaviors.

For the first time, two constraints were applied where both were combined together using a merging function. This paper proposes a new 2D segmentation method for MR shoulder images. Due to the significant length of the image sequences, we aim at minimizing the user intervention in the segmentation process. Our method integrates region and edge information in a coherent manner. In fact, the edge information is used in the definition of an adaptive similarity measure for iterative pixel aggregation. The seeds for the region growing process are defined automatically, which is essential for processing long image sequences with variable average brightness. Moreover, the proposed segmentation approach implements parallel region growing processes, and allows for dynamic region merging at successive iterations. To assess the performance of the proposed approach, we followed a standard methodology used for validating 2D segmentation, as well as a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the 3D shoulder model reconstructed from the segmented image sequences.
