By combining the concepts of multiple-sliding-surface and integral-variable-structure controls, we develop a robust controller for a multiphase 9 V VRM, which comprises four parallel DC-DC synchronous buck converters operating at 300 kHz. The advantages of the control scheme are its simplicity in design, good dynamic response, robustness, ability to nullify the bus-voltage error and the error between the load currents of the converter modules, and ability to reduce the impact of high-frequency dynamics due to parasitics on the closed-loop control system. Unlike a conventional variable-structure controller (VSC), which achieves superior transient performance by optimizing (and hence, by varying) the switching frequency, the novel controller is able to retain the excellent dynamic performance of a conventional VSC and yet maintain a constant-frequency operation of a PWM controller under 'steady-state' condition. The latter is achieved by obtaining a duty-ratio signal; however, unlike a PWM controller, the new controller calculates the duty ratio based on Lyapunov's stability criterion. Thus, the new controller also enables interleaved operation of the VRM modules.

This paper provides an introduction to sensor fusion techniques for target tracking. It presents an overview of common filtering techniques that are effective for moving targets as well as methods of overcoming problems specific to target tracking, such as measurement-to-track association and sensor registration. The computational demand of such algorithms is discussed and various practices, including distributed processing of target tracks and sensor management, are proposed to help reduce this demand. Final comments include a discussion of applications and implementation issues specific to the presented scenarios.

A custom simulation tool that combines HSPICE and MATLAB to enable time-domain noise analysis is reported. The simulation technique is based on computing the statistics of a random process by ensemble averaging and is applicable to both linear time-invariant (LTI) and linear time-variant (LTV) systems. MATLAB is used to generate a set of representative noise signals, which are imported into HSPICE for simulation. Once the simulations are complete the results are read back into MATLAB and ensemble statistics are calculated. The MATLAB-generated noise signals have a user-defined white-noise floor and flicker noise corner frequency and thus are suitable for modeling a wide variety of electronic components, including CMOS transistors and resistors. Simulation results of the time-dependent output noise of a gated integrator and the timing resolution of a gated integrator/comparator detector are presented to highlight both the utility and the versatility of the tool. © 2004 IEEE.

We describe the design and implementation and discrete validation of a high-voltage BCD-technology based smart power integrated circuit (SPIC) design, which is an "one-chip solution" to control, drive, and protect a two-stage distributed power system (DPS). As such, the proposed SPIC achieves higher power density, reduced design-cycle time, and enhanced system reliability. The DPS comprises a front-end AC-DC single-switch power-factor-correction (PFC) converter, which is cascaded with a back-end DC-DC four-switch full-bridge zero-voltage-switching (FBZVS) converter. The current-and the voltage-mode controllers for the PFC and the FBZVS converters, respectively, are integrated into the SPIC. The SPIC can "directly" fire the 2 high-side and 3 low-side devices in the power system. A combination of bootstrap and charge-pump techniques is used to power the gate-drive circuits for the high-side power devices; hence, the duty cycle for a high-side power device is 100% and independent of the turn-on time of the low-side power device in the same leg of the FBZVS converter. Additionally, a more reliable two-stage fault protection scheme is implemented in the SPIC including protection features such as under-voltage lockout, over-current protection, adaptive shoot-through protection, and soft-start capability. This paper illustrates several key experimental results obtained by controlling the DPS using the discrete SPIC to validate the functionalities of the latter and its satisfactory performance.

We present a fully differential transimpedance amplifier array with 4 parallel channels achieving an aggregate bandwidth of 10 Gb/s in 0.18 /spl mu/m digital CMOS technology. This array is intended to be bundled with an existing silicon-only photodetector to demonstrate the feasibility of monolithic silicon-based photo-detection in the GHz range. The presented transimpedance amplifier drives a load of up to 0.6 pF and handles photodiode capacitance of up to 1 pF.

We consider the problem of soft-detection for communication systems employing double differential modulation and forward error correction codes, for example, a convolutional code. We propose a soft-detector (based on the multiple symbol heuristic detector) with low computational complexity. Simulation results are provided to show the superior performance of the new soft-detector.

We review the Space Mapping (SM) and the SM-based surrogate (modeling) concepts acid their applications in engineering modeling and design optimization. The aim or SM is to achieve a satisfactory solution with a minimal number of computationally expensive "fine" model evaluations. SM procedures iteratively update and optimize surrogates based on a fast physically-based "coarse" model. We review the original, aggressive and implicit SM (ISM) techniques. A "cheese-cutting" problem illustrates the ISM concept Significant recent practical applications are reviewed. © 2004 IEEE.

This work presents the design of a mechanical vasoconstriction mechanism with application for cerebral autoregulation. The relationship between the applied voltage of a DC motor and the tension within a pressurized vessel wall was utilized for constricting an arteriole segment within an intracranial vascular model. Using current proportional to the string tension, options for closed loop feedback control are considered.

The new educational approaches, as far as teaching of history in secondary education is concerned, are characterized by a shift away from sterile memorization and towards a critical approach of historical facts and phenomena; the aim is to contribute to both the development of students' historical concept and conscience and the promotion of critical thought. These teaching goals are pursued by promoting initiative of the students through self study assignments in the form of projects; students can be greatly supported in such tasks by computer-based applications, which can offer access to vast amounts of historical texts and data to be used next to the main scholar textbook and be analyzed by students. Still, existing applications seem to be quite inadequate for this purpose, as they require that the student be already informed on a matter, before the initiation of a quest for data. In this paper, we describe an intelligent information system that is designed to facilitate browsing of educational material and historical sources, thus allowing students to efficiently retrieve information on topics that are not yet known to them and expand in this way their historical knowledge. This can help in fulfilling the aforementioned teaching goals. Our system relies on the notion of the Electronic Road.
