Exact expressions for the symbol error probability at the output of the maximum likelihood (ML) decoder are obtained for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems coded by orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) over correlated fading channels. Such expressions are derived for the general case of arbitrary input signal constellations and OSTBC, as well as arbitrary correlations of Rayleigh-Rician fading channel coefficients

In an Internet-based control system, particular human operations may violate desired requirements and lead to destructive failure. For such human-in-the-loop systems, this paper extends the remote supervisory scheme by Lee and Hsu (2003) to a modular one so as to reduce the supervisor synthesis complexity. Also, remote human issued commands are guaranteed to meet required specifications. A rapid thermal process in semiconductor manufacturing systems is provided to show the practicability of the proposed approach.

A novel microwave nondestructive testing technique is presented for breast cancer detection. A method utilizing the reflection coefficient at the aperture of a waveguide sensor radiating into a breast is described resulting in theoretical microwave images that clearly indicate the presence of a tumor. These images demonstrate the feasibility of detecting breast tumors using this approach

Guided shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (guided SH-SAW) devices coated with a polymer waveguiding layer and/or chemically sensitive layer have been investigated for the detection of analytes in liquid environments in our previous work. Design considerations for optimizing these devices for liquid phase detection is the focus of the current work. Using dual delay line geometry on LiTaO/sub 3/, guided SH-SAW sensors are designed and analyzed. The reference line, used to correct for changes in environmental conditions such as temperature fluctuations, is coated with a waveguiding layer of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA). The sensing line is coated either with a polymer that functions as both the waveguiding layer and the chemically sensitive layer (3-layer model) or with a PMMA waveguiding layer below the chemically sensitive layer (4-layer model). Experimental measurements show the 3-layer model provides higher sensitivity than the 4-layer model. Increased sensitivity when using the 4-layer model can only be achieved through rigorous selection of the guiding polymer layer and chemically sensitive layer, considering both mass loading and viscoelastic effects. Appropriate selection of the partially selective chemical layer to optimize sensitivity is also a critical design factor, particularly in sensing polar analytes in aqueous sensing applications. A methodology based on attenuated total internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) for screening the potential effectiveness of new polymer coatings for these devices has been developed and used in our work. The ATR-FTIR methodology provides an accurate determination of trends for partitioning of analytes from water into polymer coatings.

Instead of making decisions with fast but local dispatching functions, the increasing computing power and up-to-moment information provisioning have made possible real-time vehicle scheduling in an automated material handling environment in 300mm semiconductor manufacturing. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first work to adopt the scheduling approach to solve the 300mm vehicle transportation problems. We adopt Petri nets to model the coupling dynamics among transport jobs and OHT vehicles in an intrabay loop. The congestion phenomenon among OHT vehicles is captured. The OHT scheduling problem is then formulated into an integer programming problem whose goal is to efficiently allocate OHT vehicles to jobs such that average job delivery time is minimized. A solution methodology that combines Lagrangian relaxation and the surrogate subgradient methods [13] is developed. To reduce computational efforts in solving each subproblem optimally, an approximation method is developed to solve for subproblems. A heuristic algorithm is developed to adjust the dual solution to a feasible schedule. Numerical results demonstrate that our solution methodology can generate good schedules within a reasonable amount of computation time for realistic problems. Compared to a popular vehicle dispatching rule, our approach can achieve 25.6% improvements on the average delivery time in our realistic test cases.

This paper shows the development of a passive power limiting technique for variable speed generation. An 80kW Wound-Rotor Induction Generator (WRIG) was utilized to demonstrate this characteristic for wind-turbine generators by both modeling and lab demonstration. First, simulations were used to calculate the rotor impedance values that could set maximized speed-power characteristics for steady-state operation. Second, practical tests were performed and compared to the simulation results after the values were set to maximize speed-power characteristics of the 80kW-WRIG. Finally, another tandem connected WRIG was modeled to extend the wind speed range in addition to the 80kW machine.

A unified and general framework is presented for H/sub /spl infin// control of mixed continuous-time and discrete-time time-varying (periodic) systems. Using the delta operator, a close relationship is shown between the continuous- and discrete-time solutions. No assumptions are made on certain system matrices being zero or normalized, which makes the approach general and easy to apply. A combined continuous/discrete-time lifting procedure is shown to be useful, especially for ill-conditioned systems. This procedure together with the delta formalism results in a numerically robust design method concerning both short and long sampling periods for systems with W-conditioned dynamics, including widely spread eigenvalues.

Most studies of wireless random-access systems have addressed single-destination networks (e.g., an isolated base station in a cellular network). Here, we consider networks with multiple destinations, where transmissions intended for one destination can interfere with those intended for others. In our earlier work on stabilized slotted Aloha in a symmetrical two-destination system, we derived analytically an invariance result that states that the maximum overall throughput is obtained when the channel traffic is equal to one packet per slot at each of the two destinations. The value of throughput that is achieved at this optimal point depends on the degree of overlap between the two regions, i.e., on the level of interference at each destination that is caused by packets that were intended for the other destination. In this paper, we generalize our results by presenting a complete analysis for two-destination systems that are characterized by an interference model in which interference range exceeds communication range.
