In the specialized domain of brain tumor segmentation, supervised segmentation approaches are hindered by the limited availability of high-quality labeled data, a condition arising from data privacy concerns, significant costs, and ethical issues. In response to this challenge, this paper presents a training framework that adeptly integrates a plug-and-play component, MOD, into current supervised learning models, boosting their efficacy in scenarios with limited data. The MOD consists of an Online Tokenizer and a Dense Predictor, which employs self-distillation and self-modeling on masked patches, promoting swift convergence and efficient representation learning. During the inference phase, the plug-and-play MOD component is excluded, preserving the computational efficiency of the original model without incurring extra processing costs. We substantiated the value of our approach through experiments on leading 3D brain tumor segmentation baselines. Remarkably, models augmented with the MOD consistently showcased superior results, achieving elevated Dice coefficients and HD95 scores on two datasets: BraTS 2021 and MSD 2019 Task-01 Brain Tumor. Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. Data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.

The massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC) services are emerging as a new traffic type to support communications among massive numbers of mobile users (MUs) demanding the stringent delay and error-rate bounded quality-of-services (QoS) requirements in 6G. Correspondingly, the integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) technique can improve various QoS performances through spectrum/hardware sharing between target-sensing and data-communications. In addition, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) and finite blocklength coding (FBC) have been also widely recognized as the powerful 6G techniques to efficiently support mURLLC. However, how to apply the ISAC technique to accurately sense and estimate the wireless channel state while transmitting the information from the base station to MUs to support mURLLC using massive MIMO and FBC has imposed many new difficulties not encountered before. To conquer these challenges, in this paper we propose the new ISAC performance metrics for statistical-QoS guaranteed mURLLC over 6G massive MIMO mobile networks using FBC. First, we establish system models for ISAC-based architectures. Second, we detect targeted MUs and estimate the channel state using the radar sensing echo. Third, we develop a new ISAC performance metric as a function of the data-communication rate and channel state estimation distortion. Finally, we use the numerical analyses to validate and evaluate our developed ISAC performances in supporting mURLLC-oriented QoS requirements. © 2024 IEEE.

Composite materials have extensively been used in the aerospace industry. There are several inspection methods to ensure the safety of these composites;pulse thermography (PT) is one of the most promising ones. Both reflection and transmission modes of PT could be applied. However, few studies reveal the advantages and disadvantages of these two modes. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of pulsed thermal imaging in two modes of reflection and gradual heat transfer in carbon fibres. Experimental work was conducted on carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) samples with different thicknesses and thermal images were recorded in both modes. Thermal images were further processed using statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms. Comparing the results from both modes, there is a marked improvement in the accuracy when the reflection mode is employed. © 2023 SPIE.

The integration of information communication technology with the power grid exposes it to cyber threats. The network state estimation process provides stability to the smart grid. The communication network plays a major role in ensuring the successful transmission of state information. However, these network measurements are vulnerable to malicious attacks. This subsequently affects the network measurement such as associated high transmission delays and packet losses affecting the reliability of the smart grid. In this work, we propose a hybrid physics-based data-driven model that uses data fusion from the state-of-the-art physics-based Network State Estimation model and a data-driven model to detect false data injection attacks in the communication network layer of the smart grid. The performance of the data fusion method is evaluated and the simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the standalone approaches in the detection of bad data. This shows that the proposed scheme is able to improve the cyber-physical security of the communication network layer of the smart grid. © 2024 IEEE.

Programmable photonic circuits (PPCs) have garnered substantial interest for their potential in facilitating deep learning accelerations and universal quantum computations. Although photonic computation using PPCs offers ultrafast operation, energy-efficient matrix calculations, and room-temperature quantum states, its poor scalability hinders integration. This challenge arises from the temporally one-shot operation of propagating light in conventional PPCs, resulting in a light-speed increase in device footprints. Here we propose the concept of programmable photonic time circuits, utilizing time-cycle-based computations analogous to gate cycling in the von Neumann architecture and quantum computation. Our building block is a reconfigurable SU(2) time gate, consisting of two resonators with tunable resonances, and coupled via time-coded dual-channel gauge fields. We demonstrate universal U(N) operations with high fidelity using an assembly of the SU(2) time gates, substantially improving scalability from O(N2) to O(N) in terms of both the footprint and the number of gates. This result paves the way for PPC implementation in very large-scale integration.

Computing Riemann zeros with light scattering

Finding hidden order within disorder is a common interest in material science, wave physics, and mathematics. The Riemann hypothesis, stating the locations of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function, tentatively characterizes statistical order in the seemingly random distribution of prime numbers. This famous conjecture has inspired various connections with different branches of physics, recently with non-Hermitian physics, quantum field theory, trapped-ion qubits, and hyperuniformity. Here we develop the computing platform for the Riemann zeta function by employing classical scattering of light. We show that the Riemann hypothesis suggests the landscape of semi-infinite optical scatterers for the perfect reflectionless condition under the Born approximation. To examine the validity of the scattering-based computation, we investigate the asymptotic behaviors of suppressed reflections with the increasing number of scatterers and the emergence of multiple scattering. The result provides another bridge between classical physics and the Riemann zeros, exhibiting the design of wave devices inspired by number theory.

Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) allows vehicles to offload their delay-sensitive tasks to nearby Road Side Units (RSUs) for processing, which improves network quality of service (QoS). However, the self-interested SDN controller is unwilling to ask RSUs to provide free computing resources for vehicles. At the same time, complicated dependencies between vehicular subtasks may cause non-ideal task delay and energy consumption. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a Stackelberg game-based Dependency-aware task Offloading and resource Pricing framework (SDOP). Specifically, we first model a vehicular edge network that partially offloads dependency-aware tasks. Then, we depict the interaction between the SDN controller and vehicles as a Stackelberg game, with the goal of maximizing the utility of both parties. Next, we present a Gradient Ascent Plus Genetic algorithm (GAPG) to solve the problem. Finally, numerous simulations are performed, and the results show that compared with other baseline schemes, the proposed GAPG can significantly improve the utility of both the SDN controller and vehicles under various scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Increasingly available ultrastructural data from a continuously growing diversity of experimental conditions are driving new opportunities for fruitful neuroscientific hypotheses tested in intracellular compartments such as the nanoscale roles of, e.g., the mitochondria. Reliable morphological statistics are based on achieving highly accurate semantic segmentations of EM images. The state-of-the-art deep CNNs can be somewhat brittle;they tend to provide coarse and high-frequency-oscillatory solutions with discontinuities and false positives even for simple mitochondria segmentation. Historically, the current state-of-the-art in medical image segmentation would involve some variant of the encoder-decoder architecture, such as the U-Net architecture. The SAM does not perform as well, since it has not been explicitly trained for the task and does not demonstrate user-interactive, over one billion annotations mostly for natural images. However, the SAM may be applied to segment anything, including medical image segmentation challenging new datasets. This work is aimed at the difficult task of implementing domain adaptation in mitochondria segmentation within EM images obtained from various tissues and species, using deep learning. We do a systematic study to assess SAM's ability to perform segmentation in medical images, measure its performance on volumetric EM datasets, and show that it is powerful at segmenting instances even under challenging imaging conditions. We provide a fine-tuning SAM which can be naturally trained by SAM at an exemplary scale, benefiting from a diverse and large dataset over one million image masks in 11 modalities. This model would be able to perform precise segmentation for a wide range of targets under various imaging conditions, at the level of performance of specialized U-Net models, or even better.
