In this paper, we report our experience deploying the MonoTrans Widgets system in a public setting. Our work follows a line of crowd-sourced monolingual translation systems, and it is the first attempt to deploy such a system "in the wild". The results are promising, but we also found out that simultaneously drawing from multiple crowds with different expertise and sizes poses unique problems in the design of such crowd-sourcing systems. While character recognition systems applications with restrictions on writing conditions, such as zip code recognition and ledger sheet recognition, are in practical use, the accuracy of free handwritten character string recognition is still low and there are many challenges. Japanese free handwritten character strings are difficult to segment because some Japanese characters consist of multiple connected components and there are no spaces between words. Therefore, in this study, we propose a method for handwritten character string recognition method that does not require character segmentation using Transformer and CNN features. Transformer-based models usually require a large amount of annotated training data. However, our method can be trained with a small amount of annotated training data. Comparative experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method by achieving CER=O.127 while CRNN [1] and TrOCR [2] achieve CER=O.562 and CER=O.174, respectively. The results show that the proposed method is effective for Japanese character string recognition, where the variety of character strings is large and it is difficult to secure a sufficient number of training samples for each character string.

Object-oriented programming is easily accessible by beginners, since it allows for modeling real-world entities as software objects. Storytelling is a natural way to introduce the basic concepts behind object-oriented programming. To convey object-oriented programming concepts to children, such as object, attribute and etc., we present a new tangible programming tool-TanProStory, for children in 1-3 grades. Children can tell a story by arranging programming blocks to initialize a character and construct a program controlling its action. TanProStory consists of three parts: Programming blocks, Animation Game and Sensor input module. Programming blocks in TanProStory are surface-sensitive, i.e. only the command on the top surface can be detected. We conducted a preliminary user study and analyzed the results, which can guide a better design of TanProStory.

PaperLens is a novel visualization that reveals trends, connections, and activity throughout a conference community. It tightly couples views across papers, authors, and references. PaperLens was developed to visualize 8 years (1995-2002) of InfoVis conference proceedings and was then extended to visualize 23 years (1982-2004) of theCHI conference proceedings. This paper describes how we analyzed the data and designed PaperLens. We also describe a user study to focus our redesign efforts along with the design changes we made to address usability issues. We summarize lessons learned in the process of design and scaling up to the larger set of CHI conference papers.

In this paper we describe a new iterative translation process designed to leverage the massive number of online users who have minimal or no bilingual skill. The iterative process is supported by combining existing machine translation methods with monolingual human speakers. We have built a Web-based prototype that is capable of yielding high quality translations at much lower cost than traditional professional translators. Preliminary evaluation results of this prototype confirm the validity of the approach.
Projector phones, handheld game consoles and many other mobile devices increasingly include more than one display, and therefore present a new breed of mobile Multi-Display Environments (MDEs) to users. Existing studi...

In this paper, we present MonoTrans2, a new user interface to support monolingual translation;that is, translation by people who speak only the source or target language, but not both. Compared to previous systems, MonoTrans2 supports multiple edits in parallel, and shorter tasks with less translation context. In an experiment translating children's books, we show that MonoTrans2 is able to substantially close the gap between machine translation and human bilingual translations. The percentage of sentences rated 5 out of 5 for fluency and adequacy by both bilingual evaluators in our study increased from 10% for Google Translate output to 68% for MonoTrans2.
