The infusion of mobile and collaborative technologies into our everyday lives enables new forms of pervasive games and play. We use the term pervasive play as shorthand for technology-mediated, playful experiences that are tethered to our everyday lives through the physical and virtual spaces we inhabit. This includes a variety of game and play genres ranging from alternate reality games to urban games to mixed reality performance and playful uses of public displays. The goals of the workshop are to (a) strengthen and broaden the community of pervasive play researchers and practitioners, (b) explore design frameworks for creating novel pervasive play experiences, and (c) identify key research questions, methods, and challenges for future research in this area. © 2016 Authors.

Quality of life in cities can be improved through reshaping and advancing urban spaces with seamless persuasive and socially influencing strategies for empowering people to succeed in achieving better lifestyles. This vision aims at helping people to acquire healthy and resource-efficient everyday routines, thus leading to prosperous and sustainable societies. Urban engineers and technology developers are oftentimes unaware of how diversely their innovations will affect lives of many people. Therefore, this research is focused on investigating and designing ways how urban environments can be retrofitted and complemented with persuasive technology and socially influencing systems to facilitate societal changes at scale. Outcomes of this research are instrumental for various contexts, including health, mobility, education, energy and water conservation, safety, emergency management, ecology, and economy. Ultimately, more refined scientific knowledge on how to design empowering cities has to be generated and translated into applicable guidelines for practice to foster their emergence. © 2017, CEUR-WS. Mobile apps are a very promising tool to promote healthy and safe attitudes and behaviors in users, and their number is rapidly growing in app stores. However, to create effective and successful mobile apps in the health and safety domains, we need to build bridges between Mobile HCI and other areas such as persuasive technology and health psychology. This tutorial will focus on principles and theories that must be taken into account in designing persuasive mobile apps for health and safety promotion, and on how to rigorously extend Mobile HCI evaluation methods to measure the effectiveness of such apps.

CrossCult H2020 is a European project, the aim of which is the reflection of history in a cultural setting. In this paper, we describe how social media can be linked to cultural heritage and in particular how we can incorporate games, social networks, history reflection and culture. The paper presents the case study of one of the project pilots, to show how history reflection can be enhanced with the use of social networks.

human History, is a huge mesh of interrelated facts and concepts, spanning beyond borders, encompassing global aspects and finally constituting a shared, global experience. This is especially the case regarding European history, which is highly interconnected by nature;however, most History-related experiences that are today offered to the greater public, from schools to museums, are siloed. The CrossCult project aims to provide the means for offering citizens and cultural venue visitors a more holistic view of history, in the light of cross-border interconnections among pieces of cultural heritage, other citizens viewpoints and physical venues. To this end, the CrossCult project will built a comprehensive knowledge base encompassing information and semantic relationships across cultural information elements, and will provide the technological means for delivering the contents of this knowledge base to citizens and venue visitors in a highly personalized manner, creating narratives for the interactive experiences that maximise situational curiosity and serendipitous learning. The CrossCult platform will also exploit the cognitive/emotional profiles of the participants as well as temporal, spatial and miscellaneous features of context, including holidays and anniversaries, social media trending topics and so forth. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

In this paper, we designed an experiment to observe changes for different fatigue level in human brain when watching random dot stereogram (RDS) using the method of EEG. The subjects were asked to watch 3D content for 30 minutes and the disparity of RDS changed every 10 seconds. During this watching task, subjects should rate their extent of fatigue during the experiment on the scale of one to five only when they felt worse or better. 30 channels electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded through the experiment. Finally, the relationship between various fatigue levels and disparities which revealed by EEG signals were investigated. Our results show that the power of waveband, namely alpha increased with the fatigue level increasing from one to four during watching RDS, but decreased in level five. We have employed logistic regression to model fatigue level and achieved classification accuracy of 94.18%. Our research has important implications for the continuous monitoring of user's fatigue in the future.

Understanding human emotions in natural communication is still a challenge problem to be solved in human-computer interaction. Emotional tone that people feel within a period of time can affect the way people communicate with others or environment. In this paper, a new emotional tone-based two-stage algorithm for continuous emotion recognition from audio signals is presented. Gaussian mixture models of hidden Markov models (GMM-HMMs) are employed to infer the dimensional emotional tone and affect labels. Two emotional tones, positive or negative, which represent the overall emotion state over an audio clip are first obtained. Then, based on that emotional tone, corresponding positive or negative GMM-HMM classifier is refined to finish the continuous emotion recognition. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the GMM-HMM and SVR in baseline for the Audio-Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC 2014) database [1]. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Speech enhancement is an essential technique to process degraded audio in various applications. Beamforming to eliminate interferences based on sensor arrays is the most well-known method for this issue. However, traditional beamformers often face magnitude incoherence towards received signals due to directional weighting. Therefore, a novel dual-channel beamformer based on time-delay compensation (TDC) and shifted principal components analysis (PCA) is presented in this work. Firstly, our enhancement algorithm utilizes TDC estimator to preserve binaural cues, including interaural time-delay and intensity difference. Then the estimated cues are comprised to improve the shifted PCA, which can reduce noise by extracting primary components. Finally, the aforehand processed audio are input to a beamformer with post-filter to obtain enhanced speech. Experiments have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm could achieve some superiorities in speech intelligibility compared with the state-of-the-arts against real scenarios. © 2015 University of Split, FESB.

We present a movable spatial augmented reality (SAR) system that can be easily installed in a user workspace. The proposed system aims to dynamically cover a wider projection area using a portable projector attached to a simple robotic device. It has a clear advantage than a conventional SAR scenario where, for example, a projector should be installe1d with a fixed projection area in the workspace. In the previous research [1], we proposed a data-driven kinematic control method for a movable SAR system. This method targets a SAR system integrated with a user-created robotic (UCR) device where an explicit kinematic configuration such as CAD model is unavailable. Our contribution in this paper is to show the feasibility of the data-driven control method by developing a practical application where dynamic change of projection area matters. We outline the control method and demonstrate an assembly guide example using a casually installed movable SAR system. © 2015 IEEE.
