Propagation of errors in citation networks: a study involving the entire citation network of a widely cited paper published in, and later retracted from, the journal Nature

BACKGROUND:In about one in 10,000 cases, a published article is retracted. This very often means that the results it reports are flawed. Several authors have voiced concerns about the presence of retracted research in the memory of science. In particular, a retracted result is propagated by citing it. In the published literature, many instances are given of retracted articles that are cited both before and after their retraction. Even worse is the possibility that these articles in turn are cited in such a way that the retracted result is propagated further. METHODS:We have conducted a case study to find out how a retracted article is cited and whether retracted results are propagated through indirect citations. We have constructed the entire citation network for this case. RESULTS:We show that directly citing articles is an important source of propagation of retracted research results. In contrast, in our case study, indirect citations do not contribute to the propagation of the retracted result. CONCLUSIONS:While admitting the limitations of a study involving a single case, we think there are reasons for the non-contribution of indirect citations that hold beyond our case study.

Download Free Sample Searching the Internet and the ability to competently use search engines are increasingly becoming an important part of children's daily lives. Whether mobile or at home, children use search interfaces to explore personal interests, complete academic assignments, and have social interaction. However, engaging with search also means engaging with an ever-changing and evolving search landscape. There are continual software updates, multiple devices used to search (e.g., phones, tablets), an increasing use of social media, and constantly updated Internet content. For young searchers, this can require infinite adaptability or mean being hopelessly confused. This book offers a perspective centered on children's search experiences as a whole instead of thinking of search as a process with separate and potentially problematic steps. Reading the prior literature with a child-centered view of search reveals that children have been remarkably consistent over time as searchers, displaying the same search strategies regardless of the landscape of search. However, no research has synthesized these consistent patterns in children's search across the literature, and only recently have these patterns been uncovered as distinct search roles, or searcher types. Based on a four-year longitudinal study on children's search experiences, this book weaves together the disparate evidence in the literature through the use of 9 search roles for children ages 7-15. The search role framework has a distinct advantage because it encourages adult stakeholders to design children's search tools to support and educate children at their existing levels of search strength and deficit, rather than expecting children to adapt to a transient search landscape. © 2011 by Morgan & Claypool.

The role of empathy has come to prominence in HCI as the community increasingly engages with issues in medical, health and emotionally charged contexts. In such settings empathizing with others is crucial in understanding the experience of living with specific conditions, or in being sensitive to the concerns and emotions of potentially vulnerable participants. Researchers in these areas become implicated in designing new tools and technologies that support empathic relations. This workshop therefore aims to build an interdisciplinary community of researchers, designers and practitioners to share and discuss their work and the challenges they encountered when establishing empathic relationships within health or care contexts. We will work towards developing a richer conceptual and practical understanding of empathic engagement and design methods in this context to support and shape an agenda for future research.

In this paper, we present the design evolution of two social media (SM) tools: Scientific INQuiry (SINQ), which transformed into ScienceKit. We detail our motivations for using SM tools in science learning and the design decisions we made over a 2-year, design-based research project. Our designs grew from our experiences using SM tools in the field and co-designing these systems with children. Our longitudinal case study and design narrative contribute to our understanding of the design and use of SM tools to support children's scientific inquiry. Specifically, we detail (1) the affordances and constraints we gleaned from the design evolution of SINQ to ScienceKit, (2) the potential of SM to guide learning behaviors, and (3) the role of SM for children and the community of adults and peers who support them. Automatic motion estimation of multiple depth cameras has remained a challenging topic in computer vision due to its reliance on the image correspondence problem. In this paper, spherical objects are employed to estimate motion parameters between multiple depth cameras. We move a sphere several times in the common view of depth cameras. We fit the spherical point clouds to get the sphere centers in each depth camera system, and then introduce a factorization based approach to estimate motions between the depth cameras. Both simulated and real experiments show the robustness and effectiveness of our method.

Although marker-based optical motion capture has been a useful method for computer animation during the past decades, automatic and robust motion tracking from multiple video sequences is still very challenging. Several critical issues in practical implementations are not adequately addressed. For example, how to track and identify the reconstructed 3D points after image matching process? How to handle the heavy occlusion problem? This paper gives a careful investigation of the above issues. In particular, we propose a novel way to track and identify proper markers, and a new method of filling missing markers by taking account of the human model constraints. Experiments are presented to show its accuracy and robustness.

Her research lies at the intersection of human computer interaction and social theory with particular interest in feminist science and technology studies and ubiquitous computing. Lauren's dissertation work explores the relationship between the human body and embedded/implanted technology. Lauren is a student researcher with the BITS Lab at Syracuse University.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Makerspaces are environments where crafters and techies can come together to create, share and learn. Many libraries support the maker movement by providing access to a variety of technologies from sewing machines and looms to recording equipment and production tools, an expansion of services that is in line with promoting literacy, community and lifelong learning. About one third of makerspaces charged a fee or required membership in 2013, though some, including libraries and museums, are supported by major funding agencies. Digital fabrication technology or 3D printers are increasingly available through library-based makerspaces and extend opportunities for STEM education, but libraries face challenges from high initial and ongoing costs, user training and even encouraging users in 3D thinking and design. 3D printers can be a powerful stimulus for creativity, learning and sharing, even promoting jobs and community development.

Remote control robots are being found in an increasing number of application domains, including search and rescue, exploration, and reconnaissance. There is a large body of HRI research that investigates interface design for remote navigation, control, and sensor monitoring, while aiming for interface enhancements that benefit the remote operator such as improving ease of use, reducing operator mental load, and maximizing awareness of a robot's state and remote environment. Even though many remote control robots have multi-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator arms for interacting with the environment, there is only limited research into easy-to-use remote control interfaces for such manipulators, and many commercial robotic products are still using simplistic interface technologies such as keypads or gamepads with arbitrary mappings to arm morphology. In this paper, we present an original interface for the remote control of a multi-degree of freedom robotic arm. We conducted a controlled experiment to compare our interface to an existing commercial keypad interface and detail our results that indicate our interface was easier to use, required less cognitive task load, and enabled people to complete tasks more quickly. © 2013 IEEE.
