Like others, we want to apply these aspects of human communication to ease the interaction between robots and users. In doing so we believe there is a need to consider what abstraction of human social communicative behaviors is appropriate for robots. The study reported in this paper is a pilot study to not offer simulated emotion but to offer an abstracted robot version of emotion expressions and an evaluation to what extent users interpret these robot expressions as the intended emotional states. To this end, we present the mobile, mildly humanized robot Daryl, for which we created six motion sequences that combine human-like, animal-like, and robot-specific social cues. The results of a user study (N=29) show that despite the absence of facial expressions and articulated extremities, subjects' interpretation of Daryl's emotional states were congruent with the abstracted emotion display. These results demonstrate that abstract displays of emotion that combine human-like, animal-like, and robot-specific modalities could in fact be an alternative to complex facial expressions and will feed into ongoing work identifying robot-specific social cues.

Social network visualization is useful for understanding the complex structure of collaborative efforts such as citizen science projects. It has been widely accepted by social network analysts for exploring and analyzing networks by visually showing their members, the relationships among them, and their behaviors and attributes. The strength of social network visualization can be increased even further, by incorporating the time dimension of evolving networks. We analyzed the conversation network of a collaborative citizen science web platform called the Encyclopedia of Life using dynamic network visualization methods. This paper shows how the temporal visualization was applied to the social collaboration analysis of EOL and presents the findings. We found that some EOL web site features increased the interactive as well as individual member activities. We also found evidence that EOL curator activities encouraged the activities of other members.

Material artifacts are passed down as a way of sustaining relationships and family history. However, new issues are emerging as families are increasingly left with the digital remains of their loved ones. We designed three devices to investigate how digital materials might be passed down, lived with and inherited in the future. We conducted inhome interviews with 8 families using the devices to provoke discussion about how technology might support (or complicate) their existing practices. Sessions revealed families desired to treat their archives in ways not fully supported by technology as well as potential tensions that could emerge. Findings are interpreted to detail design considerations for future work in this emerging space. Copyright 2012 ACM.

We investigate how demands of a task create differing task roles with distinct levels of information uncertainty, information and cognitive load, and social responsibility. Pairs solved a standard matching game using tangrams under three different instant messaging (IM) tool conditions. We show that a participant's use and evaluation of the IM tool are largely based on their assigned task roles. The findings inform the testing and evaluation of future collaborative systems and visualization tools by demonstrating the relevance of task roles in the use and utility of these systems and tools.

In this paper we present a user study evaluating the benefits of geometrically correct user-perspective rendering using an Augmented Reality (AR) magic lens. In simulation we compared a user-perspective magic lens against the common device-perspective magic lens on both phone-sized and tablet-sized displays. Our results indicate that a tablet-sized display allows for significantly faster performance of a selection task and that a user-perspective lens has benefits over a device-perspective lens for a selection task. Based on these promising results, we created a proof-of-concept prototype, engineered with current off-the-shelf devices and software. To our knowledge, this is the first geometrically correct user-perspective magic lens.

Traces of activity left by social media users can shed light on individual behavior, social relationships, and community efficacy. Tools and processes to make sense of social traces are essential for enabling practitioners to study and nurture meaningful and sustainable social interaction. Yet such tools and processes remain in their infancy. This paper describes a study of 15 graduate students who were learning to apply Social Network Analysis (SNA) to data from online communities. Their emergent practices were observed via a pre-post survey, diaries, observations, interviews, analysis of assignments and online class interactions, and a group modeling session. From this in-depth look, we derive the Network Analysis and Visualization (NAV) process model and use it to highlight stages where interaction with peers, experts, and features of the SNA tool were most useful. The important role of visualization in supporting networked thinking was essential, as was the iterative nature of goal formation, data structuring, and data analysis. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the NAV model informs the design of SNA tools and services and supports social media practitioners.

While journalists often portray discovery as the thrilling insight of a brilliant individual, many discoveries require years of work by competing and collaborating teams. Often large amounts of foundational work are necessary and dialogs among participants help clarify goals. The Social Discovery Framework suggests that (1) there are important processes in building capacity and then seeking solutions and (2) those that initiate requests are often as important as those who seek solutions. The implications of the Social Discovery Framework are that improved social tools to build capacity, initiate requests, and support dialog would accelerate the discovery process as much as the more visible tools for individuals seeking solutions.
