Icons in graphical user interfaces convey information in a mostly universal fashion that allows users to immediately interact with new applications, systems and devices. In this paper, we define Kineticons - an iconographic scheme based on motion. By motion, we mean geometric manipulations applied to a graphical element over time (e.g., scale, rotation, deformation). In contrast to static graphical icons and icons with animated graphics, kineticons do not alter the visual content or "pixel-space" of an element. Although kineticons are not new - indeed, they are seen in several popular systems - we formalize their scope and utility. One powerful quality is their ability to be applied to GUI elements of varying size and shape - from a something as small as a close button, to something as large as dialog box or even the entire desktop. This allows a suite of system-wide kinetic behaviors to be reused for a variety of uses. Part of our contribution is an initial kineticon vocabulary, which we evaluated in a 200 participant study. In this paper, we seek to find a better way of effective task management when a progress bar interrupts user's primary activity. We propose to augment progress bars with user controlled functionalities facilitating the switch to temporary activities. We detail a taxonomy of waiting period contexts and possible temporary tasks, then report on 5 participatory design, and a follow-up survey of 96 respondents. Finally we describe an early prototype of active progress bars, and report on initial use.

After an overview of visualizations to explore temporal patterns, we will focus on interfaces for discovering temporal event patterns in electronic health records. Specifying event sequence queries is challenging even for skilled computer professionals familiar with SQL. Our novel interactive search strategies allow for aligning records on important events, ranking, and filtering combined with grouping of results to find common or rare events. A second approach is to use query-by-example, in which users specify a pattern and see a similarity-ranked list of results, but the similarity measure needs to be customized for different needs. Temporal summaries allow comparisons between groups. We will discuss the methods we use to evaluate the usefulness of our interfaces through collab.rations with clinicians and hospital administrators on case studies. Finally, application of the techniques to other domains will be discussed.

Searching for an item in a long ordered list that does not fit the screen is a frequent task when using mobile devices. This paper explores four different interfaces to support blind users in carrying out this task. Two of them are based on the idea of tree-augmentation of a list, proposed by Furnas [3], and differ in their depth versus breadth ratio. The other two interfaces adopt the more traditional technique of list scrolling based respectively on standard multitap and T9 keyboard entry. The paper reports also on the results of a pilot study of the four interfaces conducted on two blind users.

In case of the scanning document images, they are mostly the low-resolution images and the skew images. Many document images can be applied to a variety of pattern recognition area. The document images need the image preprocessing including the process of rotation. In this study, we used of three rotation processing methods: one-pass method, two-pass method, and three-pass method, for the skew coordinate transforming of the document images. We compared the result images of three rotation methods and analyzed the time complexities of three rotation methods. In this paper, we took better results in the three-pass rotation method for the document images under the angle condition between one and fifteen. And the three-pass rotation method had higher speed performance than the one-pass rotation method.
