It is commonly acknowledged that 'smart' environments, interactive architecture and 'smart' homes will defi ne the next cutting edge in architectural research. Most critics agree that one of the fi rst problems that 'smart' homes will help to address is that of spiraling costs of healthcare and aging-in-place. This may be true for urban settings where there is the fi nancial feasibility for such technologies but what about rural America? It has been conclusively proven that rural America suffers from a lack of healthcare (delivery and access). Prior research (Mathew 2005) has also established that a rural home is different from an urban home. Will technologies designed for the urban home work in a rural setting? And do rural people carry the same attitudes and biases towards technology? This paper continues our research in the design of 'smart' rural environments. It summarizes fi ndings from focus group studies conducted in rural communities that help us to understand attitudes of people towards 'smart' technology. We will use these fi ndings to examine the feasibility of ubiquitous computing and 'smart' spaces in rural areas. In conclusion, we will present guidelines to help designers in the creation of technology to augment healthy aging in rural home settings.

In this paper, we introduce K-Menu, a keyword-based dynamic menu interface. When a user enters a keyword, a menu with items related to the keyword is constructed dynamically and presented to the user. We implemented K-Menu as a top-level interface for major mobile applications and mobile web services on a smartphone environment. A subsequent user test confirmed the task efficiency and the user acceptance of K-menu.

The field of Statistics is a conceptually rich domain where information is complex, huge in volume, and highly valuable and critical for Governmental institutes. The daily production of statistical information increases exponentially worldwide, making the processing of all this information a very difficult and time - consuming task. Therefore, efficient search, filtering and browsing techniques are needed to access and process statistical data in an effective way. We present semantically enhanced search approach to enhance e-Govemment searching services. We evaluate our proposals on the case of Intrastat, that is the method of collecting information and producing statistics on the export and import of goods between Member States of the European Union (EU), providing added - value web search services. We employ Semantic Web technologies to create an intelligent search engine based on modeling the systems' electronic catalogue using the OWL ontology language, combined with AJAX techniques for usability richness and responsiveness. We present a search tool based on these technologies, that consists of a) our novel ontology for the EU Combined Nomenclature codes serving as a knowledge base, b)a semantically enhanced search and recommendation module that improves the quality of the results and c) a "Search as you type" visualization and navigation module to provide a usable interface to be used in navigation and search.

Networks have remained a challenge for information retrieval and visualization because of the rich set of tasks that users want to accomplish. This paper demonstrates a tool, NetLens, to explore a Content-Actor paired network data model. The NetLens interface was designed to allow users to pose a series of elementary queries and iteratively refine visual overviews and sorted lists. This enables the support of complex queries that are traditionally hard to specify in node-link visualizations. NetLens is general and scalab.e in that it applies to any dataset that can be represented with our abstract Content-Actor data model.

Elementary-age children (ages 6-11) are among the largest user groups of computers and the Internet, so it is important to design searching and browsing tools to support them. However, many such tools do not consider their skills and preferences. In this paper, we present the design rationale and process for creating the searching and browsing tool for the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), the results from a user study evaluating it, and the challenges and possibilities it presents for other children's interfaces. Color is one of the most important low-level features used in image analysis and retrieval. In this paper we introduce an algorithm for extracting compact color feature in the CIElab.color space. Our method is based on an ant colony clustering algorithm, which helps us develop a perceptually based image similarity metric. We propose a dominant color and area percentage model, which provides a very compact color feature representation of images. Besides image similarity metric is developed based on dominant colors matching. The algorithm introduced in this paper is well suited for creating small color descriptors and is efficient. It is suitable for image representation, matching and retrieval. It also has some important advantages for content-based image retrieval system, such as great reduction of the feature file sizes needed for storage and indexing.
