Since its release, Kinect has been the de facto standard for low-cost RGB-D sensors. An infrared laser ray shot through an holographic diffraction grating projects a fixed dot pattern which is captured using an infrar...

iSonic is an interactive sonification tool for vision impaired users to explore geo-referenced statistical data, such as population or crime rates by geographical regions. Users use a keyboard or a smooth surface touchpad to interact with coordinated map and table views of the data. The integrated use of musical sounds and speech allows users to grasp the overall data trends and to explore the data to get more details. Scenarios of use are described.

In this paper we describe a pen-based user interface for easy and natural user interaction with a wall projection display. VisualPen is a vision-based system for real-time detection and tracking of a pen that completely replaces mouse and keyboard. The low computational complexity of its algorithms renders it easy to implement with low-cost, lowpower embedded hardware, thus allowing portability and integrability. The architecture of the system is described, and experimental results are presented and commented.

Networks have remained a challenge for information retrieval and visualization because of the rich set of tasks that users want to accomplish. This paper demonstrates a tool, NetLens, to explore a Content-Actor paired network data model. The NetLens interface was designed to allow users to pose a series of elementary queries and iteratively refine visual overviews and sorted lists. This enables the support of complex queries that are traditionally hard to specify in node-link visualizations. NetLens is general and scalab.e in that it applies to any dataset that can be represented with our abstract Content-Actor data model.

This paper describes a pattern classification approach for detecting frontal-view faces via learning a decision boundary. The classification can be achieved either by explicit estimation of density functions of two classes, face and non-face or by direct learning of a classification function (decision boundary). The latter is a more effective approach, when the number of training availab.e examples is small, compared to the dimensionality of image space. The proposed method consists of a implicit modeling of both face and near-face classes using Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and a subsequent classification stage based on the decision boundary estimation using Support Vector Machine (SVM). Multiple nonlinear SVMs are trained for local subspaces, considering the general non-Gaussian and multi-modal characteristic of face space. This parallelization of SVMs reduces computational cost of on-line classification, since the locally trained SVM has small number of support vectors compared to the SVM trained on entire data space. We showed that the proposed algorithm is superior to the simple combination of ICA and SVM, both in accuracy and computational burden.

This paper describes the evaluation of a gesture-based mechanism for issuing the back and forward commands in web navigation. Results show that subjects were able to navigate significantly faster when using gestures compared to the normal back button. They were also extremely enthusiastic about the technique, with several expressing their wish that "all browsers should support this".

Elementary-age children (ages 6-11) are among the largest user groups of computers and the Internet, so it is important to design searching and browsing tools to support them. However, many such tools do not consider their skills and preferences. In this paper, we present the design rationale and process for creating the searching and browsing tool for the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), the results from a user study evaluating it, and the challenges and possibilities it presents for other children's interfaces.
