Arranging 3D objects in Virtual Environments can be a complex, error prone and time consuming task, especially for users who are not familiar with interfaces for 3D navigation and object manipulation. In this paper, w...

As the Web has shifted to an interactive environment where vast amounts of content is created by users, the question of whom to trust and what information to trust has become both more important and more difficult to answer. At the same time, social networks have become very popular with over a billion accounts shared across hundreds of networks. Social trust relationships, derived from social networks, are uniquely suited to speak to the quality of online information;recommender systems are designed to personalize, sort, aggregate, and highlight information. Merging social networks, trust, and recommender systems can improve the accuracy of recommendations and improve the user's experience. In this tutorial, we will cover the use of social trust in recommender systems. Topics including the computation of trust in social networks, integration of trust into recommender systems, and a discussion of when trust offers benefits and the challenges it presents.

Social trust relationships between users in social networks speak to the similarity in opinions between the users, both in general and in important nuanced ways. They have been used in the past to make recommendations on the web. New trust metrics allow us to easily cluster users based on trust. In this paper, we investigate the use of trust clusters as a new way of improving recommendations. Previous work on the use of clusters has shown the technique to be relatively unsuccessful, but those clusters were based on similarity rather than trust. Our results show that when trust clusters are integrated into memory-based collaborative filtering algorithms, they lead to statistically significant improvements in accuracy. In this paper we discuss our methods, experiments, results, and potential future applications of the technique.

There are many children for whom learning is difficult if they need to remain still. The Nintendo Wii, with its motion-controlled sensors, can support learning experiences that enable children to be physically active learners. This paper presents the methodologies and results from a multi-day, co-design session at the University of Maryland's human-computerinteractionlab. The goal of the sessions was to design an instructional game that leveraged the Nintendo Wii's motion controls to teach about U.S. National Parks.

Children are among the most frequent users of the Internet, yet searching and browsing the web can present many challenges. Studies over the past two decades on how children search were conducted with finite and pre-determined content found in CDROM applications, online digital libraries, and web directories. However, with the current popularity of the open Internet and keyword-based interfaces for searching it, more critical analysis of the challenges children face today is needed. This paper presents the findings of our initial study to understand how children ages 7, 9, and 11 search the Internet using keyword interfaces in the home. Our research has revealed that although today's children have been exposed to computers for most of their lives, spelling, typing, query formulation, and deciphering results are all still potential barriers to finding the information they need.
